Can the audio technicians, or the guy in charge of them, please do their job properly! Having the booth commentators, on-water reporters, crew audio from BOTH boats, plus background boat and environment noise all blurred together adds up to a cacophony. Pick one track and get it right!

Don't mind the commentators, don't mind the talk on the boat, don't mind the sound of the boats. But put it all together, over top of each other, and the sound on these clips is a mess. If you are the official channel you could be doing a lot better.

      @NickOakley Před 3 lety +4

Yes, if you're new to this, it's bewildering and confusing. In the Sky coverage of Formula One at least Martin Brundle occasionally takes a step back to explain a technicality for newbies, but with this, you can't even seem something as fundamental as wind direction, and unless you're totally on the case, it's tough to distinguish between a gybe and a tack.

    • @robertewalt7789

Nick, I sailed and raced in NYC harbor weekends, so I thought I knew a little. My first thought on seeing these was, why don’t they let out the sails more downwind? Of course they get so much more speed up on the foils, they don’t go more downwind than a broad reach.

I think it would be more interesting if the crews were not allowed to use live onboard computing for strategy, but just had to rely on the skipper's experience and craft like they used to in the old days.
Also, it's a shame that a single splash down almost invariably costs the race. A less extreme design that allowed a faster return for foiling would make for more interesting racing, especially if onboard computing were eliminated at the same time. Additionally, a less extreme design would also likely result in entries from more teams in the competition.
I've watched all the races so far, but as fast as these boats are, isn't it a bit boring if both vessels are not in the same camera shot? These races have tended to visually become time trials, rather than the match races one would hope for.

Tgere uus a reason why it's called the old days. Less technology, less speed.
These boats today would sail circles round the old days boats.
Don't compare different era's, it's no use. 'Cause how far would you have to go back? 20years? 50? 100? Longer?

Interesting boats/technology demonstrators for sure but so far away from actual sailing at sea that you have to wonder whether any trickling down is really possible. This isn't the first time, the giant cats of the previous editions were just the same. That may be why only 4 teams got interested in competing and only 2 invested seriously.
I personally find a race like the Vendee Globe an order of magnitude more everything and the technology used in those boats actually has a chance to help sailors.
I would perhaps look at it differently if the America's cup races were tight, but this is basically as boring as formula one.
So what's left are beautiful "lake" sail boats that can only be sailed in super narrow conditions in a handful of spots. Why not but to me this isn't what sailing is about.

i love your description. listening to commentator rattling off the loads (excuse my ignorance of correct terminology) on various yacht bits(omg SORRY, i know its painful, like listening to wife talk about cricket) staggering load numbers. Bit like ticking tipping time bomb. No wonder sounds like the kids playing there transformer game.
Ouch. Fantastic win guys. Go Team New Zealand. Making Kiwi's Proud.

They put a microphone on the local building site, on a guy doing concrete drilling. Really adds atmosphere to the coverage, so they keep it full volume the whole time. It's very professional broadcasting....

I was lucky to own M12 Magic for 4 years. A real sailboat I guess. Old Skool now. Only 500 thumbs up. 83 comments. I feel the sail community couldn't care less. Which is a shame. And/ But happy to see no more mouth-mask in NZ. I guess if people can't relate, it's just for the happy few who pay for this. Sponsor exposure is secondary of-course, but a nice tax write-off. and close family and friends.

This really is a joke. What a mess the Kiwis have made of this event. Forget sailing, just turn up the speed, hype, marketing and misuse of technology. The 18 footers were better than this.
They call this stuff close racing? hahaha

It would be nice if the skippers didn't use computers. What happened to using their knowledge and experience to win the race! The crash boats and radio communications can tell if the ship is almost off the course. How about one mark instead of two if you want to stick to true racing. I think the new tech is cool, but don't need to throw out some general racing rules because it's the America's Cup.

Please, employ some local high school AV monitors to run the coverage. The video quality of this event is almost unwatchable. The commentary is inane drivel, interspersed with someone breaking up concrete with a pneumatic drill. Oh, and let's completely miss the defining moment of the race when America stuffed up a tack and dropped off the foils. You have one job...FILM THE YACHTS RACING !!! Amateurs.

  • @Chris.Davies

Disappointing lack of decent graphics, and inconsistently displayed! No VMG!
Shirley continues to make me feel ill every time I hear her screeching, shouting, nasal British twang. For our ear's sake, tell her to stop shouting, and use her Natural Voice (She probably doesn't know what that is), and let the microphone do its work!
Microphones do NOT pick up the ambient noise, and it's NOT necessary to shout into them! Speaking normally is all which is required. EVEN IF YOU ARE IN A NOISY ENVIRONMENT, THERE IS NO NEED TO SHOUT INTO THE MIKE!
Excellent camera work, and OK audio - but the commentators make no effort at all to explain what the various noises on the boats signify, and we have no way of knowing what they are.
I sincerely hope all this stuff gets sorted out before the AC races take place. It won't be much fun, otherwise!

Correct. These dolphin slicers are an engineering curiosity worth checking out for a few minutes but why you would care to watch them "race" is a complete mystery and a greater mystery still is why anybody would care who wins -except, from a NZ perspective, it would be quite nice to get rid of this rubbish at last.
