This is exactly what my father had when I was born. Same color every detail I REMEMBER. Many vacations spent in this car. I loved those taillights I want one. My dad is long gone now but my memories are vivid and clear of those days when this car turned heads!

I really enjoyed seeing this great car ! The first car I ever owned was a '56 that I bought in '66, when I was in the Air Force, at my duty station of McGuire AFB, in NJ ! It was a station wagon that was factory painted in dark forest green, with a white top. I drove it for about 2 years, until '68. Great car !

This was the first car I ever owned. My dad gave it to me. It was the exact same sea-foam green, but the roof was white. Much classier than the mono-color shown here. The interior was huge. He skipped the coolest feature - the ash trays were completely hidden in the ribbed chrome dash. You literally had to know where they were to open them. Perfect for stashing our weed in case we got pulled over. It was built like a tank. We put 250,000 on it before the front end started to fall apart and we could no longer get parts for it.

Had a neighbour who had one of these when it was new, and loved the deep roar when the starter was depressed.

We used to lie on the rear window shelf, especially at drive-in movies. (Ours was 2-tone green.) (No seatbelts, though)

Funny thing is, that's the Special trim level, which was the lower-end Buick model, but it's still very luxurious for the time. Gotta love those 50's cars, probably my favorite era for cars.

I do believe that has a 322 Buick Nailhead v8 engine not a 331.. 331 is a very strange number to throw out there.

    • @tubbs2132
      @tubbs2132 Před 2 lety

Yep, 322 was the displacement for all models but the special had less HP than the others by about 30. No clue what the hell a 331 is

  • @bobgrauer

A 331 cu in was made by Chrysler, 322 cu in was made by Buick.

thats not a 331 v8 its a 322 nail head, and the white walls are not correct, original were much wider white almost to the tread

..hey-ya, Tony,,,, and yes, sir...precious few of the pilarred, Series 40 Coupes and Sedans made the " restoration cut"...even though these were the dominant sellers...they tended to be heavily used and abused...
....at this time, there was somewhat of an undisclosed horsepower/performance war going on between all of the G Divisions...many of the senior engineering guys had served in World War II: snd had been exposed to both advanced performance aircraft; as well as European performance cars...
...the engineers at Lansing rather caight the other divisions napping when they debuted the Rocket V8's in 48-49...and had become the darlings of early stock car racers...
...Buick, as GM'S penultimate marque was always innovating new and more refined engines, and the senior execs at Pontiac were desperately trying to move the image of the brand from a conservative " librarian's car" into a car known for its power and racing capabilities...
...this pilarred Sedan finished in Glacier Green was fitted with a highly capable 322 flathead V8, which produced a bhp rating of 223 and a whopping 433 lb, if low-end torque
...my Dad, Cliff just loved these seeming conservative family sedans...but actually, underneath the hoods.... stealth hot rods....
...my folks had a '57 Century Riviera Hardtop Sedan in Adriatic Blue over Dover White...it was one dead sexy (and powerful) car...
...abd, yes, Tony, you were right to point out the "bank vault" thunk as you closed the doors...Buick buyers expected this high level of build quality...and Flint delivered it ..in spades...
...lastly...this Special was Buick's entry level model; and was actually 4 inches shorter ( ditto Century) than the "big Buick" models of Super and Roadmaster...
...and an FYI...Buick didn't even offer power windows on the Special, so any retrofit would destroy the carefully accurate restoration...
...while sakes for 1956 fell from the records set in '55...Buick still managed to finish as the 4th most popular cars, with just over 572,000 total production...behind Chevy, Ford snd Plymouth...with just shy of 67,000 of these Special Sedans sold at an MSRP of $2,416...
...all Special models, including a 4-door pilarred sedan, a hardtop coupe and sedan, a convertible and wagon constituted nearly 47% of total production...
