Here I was just chilling, listening to the usual bands I just put on CZcams while cranking out my engineering homework and I randomly click this song. I gotta say...holy shit, where has this band been my entire life? Awesome.
+ I think its one of their "better" songs !
Yeah this is one of their best songs imo, but really all of their stuff is great. One of those bands I can just put on an entire album and not skip around at all.
A few interesting notes from an inhabitant from the same city as MaSu came from (As this song most likely is about Luleå, their hometown).
First the "dead train yard" There are several massive trainyards (Comparable to the size of the city) that is only used for the large steel mill and there is nothing else running on those yards. As there is not many trains coming all the time, it mostly lies silent and empty except the trains standing still.
"The serpent hollow" most likely refers to a large hill named Ormberget (Snake mountain) in the same town and is used as a ski-spot during the winter.
"The silent fortress underneath" probably refers to the many bunkers built during WW2 that surrounds Luleå. All of them are now defunct and closed down the public and falling into disrepair.
"And the fires hide the black island, the toxic sands" A urban area near the steel mill is named Svartöstaden or Black Island Town. Toxic sands MIGHT refer to a commonly held belief that the waters near the steel mill named skitviken (Literally shit creek) are toxic and should not be swimmed in, drunk from or fished in. Which is most likely true, as there is a lot of spill water from the steel mill dumped into the water.
"Dancing city lights glowing against the sky" During the winter when there is a lot of clouds, the clouds are colored a sickly greyish-yellow hue from the lights of the city and the steel mill.
"yellow belvedere" I am not sure, but it could refer to the Yellow Pavilion, a structure in the central street in the city that is often used as a meeting-place for demonstrations or just a general meeting spot.

The people who don't appreciate Gaz's vocals never even gave him a chance in the first place. They listen and instantly go "omg unusual vocals, fuck this". And I'll admit that I myself only grew to like him over time. But now, I'll say this: there is no voice more fitting for MaSu. Definitely.

I'll admit I didn't like them much at first, but now I see they are a perfect mixture of power metal and alternative metal vocals, which is pretty much what MaSu is, so it fits.
I've given them a chance. I really wanted to like him, the music is great, but his voice is just annoying to me.

I've given him a chance as well. He fits the band overall sound, but a bit deeper vocals wouldn't be worse. I like how he sings, don't get me wrong, but his voice makes the band sound lighter than it should IMO to get the sound I wish they had. But, that's only my opinion, they are still able to make amazing piece of music.
That intro and that sound just makes me shiver! So bloody good.

This song is IMPORTANT to me.
I remember some of the best years of my life by listening to this. Hanging out with friends, learning how to play Cyberpunk 2020 and using this as a theme song for our tabletop campaign. That campaign grew larger and larger, until we held a LARP called Totentanz, followed by Totentanz II and Totentanz III.
Now the whole larp concept has gone "official" with Totentanz: Reloaded. In every single game we have this song at some point of the game, and it is such a cool feeling to see those "oldie but goldie" players always being struck by awe as they listen to this and remember the small apartment and the games from which all of this began.
I actually first heard about MaSu when Totalbiscuit was pimping them back when he used to do podcasts for World of Warcraft. That was a few years back...so, yeah.
Overworld and A View From the End of the World are two of the best albums I've ever heard. MaSu is incredible.
He introduced me to MaSu, I think on a TGS/Cooptional Podcast episode. RIP Totalbiscuit.
