    Thank you! Someone who does simple but highly necessary, accurate tests that show us exactly what the product is like. I have a Nest doorbell, part of me loves it but more of me hates it. It’s been buggy in the past missing someone running around in my front yard. I caught the person with my own eyes, the Nest camera failed. Recorded only seconds after the person wasn’t visible yet it records the dumbest things like paper flying in the wind. Super frustrating and at first battery life was pretty good but now every couple weeks it warns me it’s about to die. I just want a good, reliable, long lasting camera (learning how much I dislike doorbell cameras) that actually records what’s going on, I’d love one that follows movement as well and warns me and doesn’t struggle to upload the videos which is another ridiculous issue I’ve had with Nest and it requires top notch internet and I just don’t have that. So often my videos are super grainy even though the camera itself is a good quality, there’s just too many issues that make it difficult to overlook

    Realistically, I bought 2 Wyze cameras that are inside my window and give full coverage of entrance ways and the area surrounding my home. Both have sd cards and cloud storage, night vision and motion and sound sound detection and ai capability. They are both visible from the exterior of the home and most cameras are merely deterrents. I can set the sensitivity of motion and watch my video live or go back and look at what and who's been around my property. The video is clear and the cameras were under $40 a piece, although I got mine used from Poshmark for $15 bucks a piece. They serve the purpose and both have a mic, speaker, alarm and have been reliable. That's all I look for in a camera. The cloud and licenses for both cameras only come to like $6 per month and there's a ton more options in the camera settings I don't even use. Although my cameras aren't "outside" cameras per say, I'm able to see 80% of my property and all window and door access with the two cameras. Really serves the purpose without spending a bunch of money on things you don't need and do the same things.

    The Blink outdoor wireless battery operated camera is my choice since they survived the cold snowy winter of Tahoe, CA (temperature fluctuates 100F degree between seasons) running over 2 years on 2 AA Lithium (Energizer Ultimate Lithium). I used them to take day/night security snap-shot photos and turn off all video, voice, etc. features to extend the battery life. The WIFI used by these camera is provided by a 4G/LTE cellular modem (MoFi 4500/sim 7) with a T-Mobile sim card (unlimited data with 4G/LTE guarantee for the first 50GB). First off, thanks for making great videos. You are a good presenter - you speak clearly and use just enough words. Too many CZcamsrs yak on about nothing.
    I suggest making a video of only cameras that do not need a subscription. Subscriptions prices cost way more than the camera itself.
    Also, I found that batteries just aren't worth it. You get tired of changing them - so you just don't. So now I plug in the ones that are near an outlet. I bought 15 or 10 foot USB cables with ends that stop water from getting in. They also are faster with full power. They cost less than one battery change. For the cameras not near an outlet, I use solar.
    Blink of course is the cheapest option by far. But they purposely delay video playback unless you have a subscription. The video is slow even when on a new iPhone and phone and Blink on the same network. It should, in theory, be faster than the subscription.
    You may want to include Swan in your next test. I have their hard-wired light and cam (no subscription) above the garage. The video playback is super quick. They make other cams but I haven't tried one yet.

    Nice job, Synology Surveillance Station has a feature to record a pre-set duration before and after a motion detection event. Your demonstration proved why we have that feature and can adjust the length of extended recording because the camera's algorithm might not decide to trigger an event notification until that incident has already walked past the camera's field of view. Filming post event detection is to capture relevant audio or incase they quickly returned to the camera Field of view, it reduces the cuts in recording.
    However I choose to do 24 hour continuous recording with 30 days of footage retention. I take my security cameras seriously, they're not a subscription service toy. 14 security cameras, 8 are recording constantly with a UPS backup power supply keeps them running during an outage. I've had to dedicate 12TB of my 48TB data pool just to Surveillance Station footage. 👍🍻

    I had five Ring Wireless Cameras installed around our home for about a year. Each had a Ring Solar panel and while the notification process (intruder alert) wasn't that great and I had difficulty accessing the feed remotely if I was anywhere other than inside my house or driveway, I thought for what I paid and for what they did I got what I paid for. That was until my neighbor across the street knocked on the door and asked if my driveway camera could see her mail box. Of course it could. Someone had just hit her mail box and drove off. So, went to retrieve the video and discovered there was no video. It seems that ALL of our Ring cameras had unexplained gaps in their recording. For example, our drive way camera recorded our pool service arrive. Three other cameras should have recorded his walk down the side of the house, at the pool, and at the pool pump but none did. After long conversations with RING, they told us video would only record if the sensor detected movement within the sensor range and the sensor range is smaller than the camera viewing range. I understood that and had set the sensor ranges to max when I installed them. Then they dropped the bomb, basically the technology wasn't there for the sensor to detect movement, video activate, recording start, before whatever set the sensor off moved outside of the sensor range. So, the car that hit the mailbox was simply moving too fast. Our pool service, basically the same. Guy doing an average walk was just too fast for the RING. They all went into the trash and I had my nephew help me install wired cameras to a home server.

    I've owned Arlo cameras for years and I recently switched to Ring.
    Arlo definitely makes the superior cameras but beyond that, their service is terrible.
    So we take a trip to Hawaii and on day two of the trip, I get a notification that someone is at my door at 9 at night.
    I hop on the app and I'm greated with a message that I have too many streams (5) running and I'm not able to view the event or go live.
    After doing research, the only way to resolve the issue is to reset my router which was not possible at the time as I was traveling.
    Now the major issue here is I only had 2 streaming cameras connected which is well.short of the 5. This is a known issue at Arlo and they simply have zero interest in fixing it.
    If your arlo camera happens to lose a connection to the wifi... you have no way to fix it unlike ring where from the app you're able to solve for most issues.
    And it doesn't matter which camera you own. It's all on the same terrible app with the same error that can only be fixed with a hard reset of your internet.
    So while Ring's cameras are not as good as Arlo, they still beat the app with connectivity and availability. Those fancy cameras don't mean anything if they are not available.

    It is worth mentioning Google Nest Cams have a local storage fallback: if wifi goes down, it will record up to 1 hour of video and upload the material as soon as the wifi comes back on. In addition, if you decide to plug it in inside (it is an option), it will also detect smoke and CO2. Although the latter might not qualify to be in your review, I believe the former is right on topic.

All products should link to the Homebase imo and the head on detection is a MUST it only detects motion when anyone approaches it from the side. Thanks for the comprehensive review as always LifeHackster. One thing that strikes me on the Eufy... it seems like a flawed design because most people mount their cameras up under an eave where the solar panel is going to be in shadow and not very effective. Even in your demo shots three quarters of the solar panel is in shadow. Integrating a solar panel seems nice in theory, but in reality it seems very flawed compared to having a solar panel you can expose properly to the sun and angle throughout the year.

    • @chrissampson7569
      @chrissampson7569 Před rokem +1

      ☝️That right there sums up exactly why I opted for separate solar panels for my Eufy cams. Every one of them is mounted under an eave. Besides, I would rather have a storm take out a $60 exposed solar panel vs a $200 camera.

    • @LifeHackster
      @LifeHackster  Před rokem +6

      I have at least a full sun around 2-4 hours a day where I installed the S40. I have to film it partially sun lit more for contrast (that viewers will see the difference) I had this for almost a year exposed to the elements in the TX heat and it is holding up well..there is some yellowing on the body but aside from that, it works and looks fine. I’ll be doing a 1 year review soon. Also, I have mentioned it before, it is an eye sore, if you have a separate solar panel setup for a camera especially when placed in the front of the house. With the S40, it is a smaller footprint and cleaner setup than traditional solar panel systems.

You shouldn't have it mounted under the eave. If you get other Eufy WiFi cams, you don't need solar panels, but you will have to recharge them roughly every 3-6 months (depending on the model(s)) and you can have those mounted under the eave. I really wish someone would take the Wyze v3 and make it better quality but keep its compact, unobtrusive size, color night vision and most importantly local storage. My biggest gripe with some of those cameras is they're huge. I realize that if they're highly visible that in itself could be a deterrent to some but it also lets the bad guys know where they are and I just prefer the minimalist look of the Wyze. That now said I agree that their battery powered outdoor cameras are a steaming pile of garbage.

      I have a couple of Wyze V3 cameras on my back deck. One aims at the bedroom windows/side gate, while the other aims at the back door/dining room window/wood fence, and I have detections zones set up. I have the deck light set to come on every night at sunset at only 10 percent power (enough to see anything on the deck, but doesn’t blast light through the bedroom windows), and some of the light spills onto the back of the house. My issue: Every time the HVAC kicks on, there is a momentary dimming of the lights, and both Wyze cameras detect that and send notifications that they detected movement. I tried turning off Notifications (kinda defeats the purpose of the cameras), but they automatically turn themselves back on at night, and I have to turn them off again. I even have the sensitivity turned down to 10, but they still notify me that motion has been detected. I love the affordability of the Wyze Cams and the fact that I can record continuously, but this is getting old. Two more EufyCams would be expensive, but I might not have a choice. Alas….

    Thanks for putting this together. I’d be curious to perform a similar test with the wired option on the Nest.
    That being said I think you may have a faulty Nest unit, before going wired with my nest I tried wireless and my notifications were pretty quick.
    My wired nest notifications are instant to the point I have to reduce the sensitivity. It records me walking towards it with no problem

      Wiring the Nest Cam will make it use camera or pixel based detection instead of the PIR sensor and it will be more reliable and actually the only setup that will make this camera shine. Initial notifications are quick when the PIR sensor detects me which this camera tends to detect late.

      Thanks for the insight and quick response, do you have a review on the wired nest setup?

    Hi, I just found your channel and you did an awesome review! We got everything in Ring, I really hope they work well and no contract. I'm just waiting on my erro 6 router to come in. We have had 2 thieves in a year. I hope the ring equipment is easy to set up, we may have to get a Tech. Thank you again!

    Blink is definitely the worst. After having them for 2 months I already had to replace the batteries. It doesn't open live view without alot of glitches before opening like "live view in progress" "system busy" "camera busy" and when it finally opens it'll give you "live view failed" and kick you off. All my cameras have full connection to the WiFi and the sync module.

      Blink is more save battery first and security second type of system.

      @@LifeHackster definitely! Although I do like the doorbell cam I wish I would of went with a wired system and maybe one blink outdoor camera and the doorbell, Incase of a power outage. Of course this is all just my opinion and experience with the blink system so far. Your videos are very helpful forsure

    I think Arlo Ultra the best, and Wyze 3 going to be the last because that Motion Sensor notification takes a long ass time.

    Great review as usual but one thing that's missing (in my opinion) is WiFi range. I have both Eufy and Reolink cameras and I notice a difference in WiFi range and stability. I use some of my cameras at quite a distance from my router to cover a shed in the back yard and the farthest outside corners of the house. One brand will handle it, the other... not so much. It might be important to your viewers since it's a bummer to spend $200 on a camera and find that it can't operate where you want to place it.
