The story behind the invention of slap was actually when the drummer didn't show up at a performance, causing Larry to use a new percussive technique in the place of him.
I heard that he invented slap when he use to play music with his mom. She was on piano and he was on bass. They had no drummer so he decided to play percussion with his bass.
1) Larry calls it Thumpin' and Pluckin' 2) The first "slap" ("Thumpin") song was Sly and the Family Stone's 1st hit, "Dance To The Music" 3) The first "Slap and Pop" (Thumpin' and Pluckin') tune "thank you falletinme be mice elf agin"

That did look like it might have been a double bass but that style is more commonly played on the tololoche which is slightly smaller than the English double bass. The real kick is it the tololoche uses fat nylon Spanish strings that make the tone a little softer and the slap a little harder. Definitely CZcams tololoche. If you liked the bad here you will love tololoche.

There is an 80's video of Larry doing a tutorial, called something like "Right Hand Slap Bass Technique". Man, I can watch the first 30 seconds of that over and over! Cool stuff...true pioneer!
Graham was one of the greats. I saw him with his band Graham Central Station in '75 at the Crater Festival in Honolulu. He also pioneered the use of the voice box while he was with Sly and the Family Stone.
The upright slap bass was used in Johnny Cash's early songs he recorded at Sun Records. The original Folsom Prison Blues is my favorite of his and the slap bass as the beat was one of the main reasons why.
YES and it sounded awesome. Slap upright is making a comeback in regional Mexican music (deceptive genre name as most of it is recorded in the US). But they use what's called a tololoche. It's like an English double bass but smaller, probably for Spanish orchestras. It has nylon strings and has a little softer fuller tone when plucked and a SERIOUS slap
Ok but can we appreciate how curved Larry Graham’s slapping thumb is
Is having a curved slapping thumb a good thing?

I still don’t understand one thing guys: Is the slap bass technique literally just hitting the strings with your thumb?
Yes basically having a slap fight with your string
Kinda, for your thumb you move your wrist to where your thumb hits through the string and you pluck with your fingers
And now I have some opening to a Paul Simon ditty in my head for some reason!! 😂😂😂
My inner Primus comes out anytime I hear slap bass
