Japan is a nation that is good at capturing opportunities and judging the situation. When China was strong, it learned all the excellent civilizations and techniques of the Han people. When the Han people declined at the end of the Ming Dynasty, they immediately focused their attention on the Western countries that had risen through maritime civilization and learned them. In addition, there is a gambler mentality. The launch of a war against the Qing Dynasty, Russia and the United States is a manifestation of gambling national luck. There is no denying that the Japanese are the best students in the world

It is impossible for ancient Chinese to teach non-Han people (mainly in East Asia) about any Chinese technology and Chinese culture. Because it is Chinese secrets and very complex technology (including Chinese language. Chinese characters. And architectural design .... ).
Because the ancient Chinese believed that there were only Han and non -Han people (barbarians). In ancient East Asia, there was only one emperor. That is the Chinese emperor. Dragon is the symbol of power of the Chinese emperor. The Chinese (Han) are the descendants of the dragon. Then, then, then
In ancient times, there were no television and networks and CZcams to understand ancient Chinese technology and culture through plagiarism. Only places where ancient Chinese arrived and established Chinese local regimes (where the occupation and became Chinese territory) appeared Chinese culture in this place :
Chinese Dragon. Chinese Clothing Style (Han Nation). Chinese mythology (content modification> Japanese mythology). Chinese architectural design (Han and Tang dynasty style-black roof). Chinese characters (people who will not fluent Chinese official language. Chinese characters cannot be used in use. ) Chinese coin circulation. Chinese religion (Taoism. Chinese -style Buddhism). Confucian culture (governance method and spirit). Chinese etiquette (kneeling). Chinese art (painting, music. Tea art ...). Ancient Chinese Books (History. Novel. Poetry ....)
      * Ancient Chinese = Han ethnic
During the Qin Dynasty in China. The ancient Chinese occupied the place in Japan
During the Tang Dynasty in China . These Chinese people built a large number of traditional Chinese buildings in Japan (today known as traditional Japanese architecture).
At that time, the Japanese ancestors (speaking Japanese language) were still primitive. The clothes were mainly animal skin and leaves.
They regard the Chinese as God (the prototype of the Japanese God is ancient Chinese).
For example: 卑彌呼 Himiko. She is the adoptive daughter of the Chinese emperor. She is a Chinese female official position. On behalf of the Chinese emperor, she is responsible for governing Japan. All funds are supported by the Chinese royal family. She knows Chinese Taoist ghosts and magic spells and divination. She is fluent in Chinese language (official language and Han dialect) and Chinese characters......
In Japan's first Yin Yang division, ninja and monks are also ancient Chinese. The names of "ancient Japan東瀛" and "ancient Korea 朝鮮" in history were named after the Chinese emperor.

During the Qin Dynasty (秦朝), when the Chinese people arrived in Japan by ship (Fleeing and expanding the territory due to the Chinese war). The local indigenous people regarded the Chinese as God. The image of the Japanese gods looked like ancient Chinese and Chinese clothes. You can see that Japanese myths are adapted from Chinese mythology.
(The Japanese were still indigenous during this period. And there was no characters.
      )
These Chinese in ancient Japan later returned to China (the Tang Dynasty). They asked the Chinese Emperor of the Tang Dynasty to send a large number of Chinese scholars and Chinese technicians (including architects, doctors, monks, artist ,Chinese martial arts Master ...). Let them take a big ship to Japan together. Establish a Chinese local regime in Japan. It becomes a part of a Chinese territory. Like other Chinese cities. In ancient Japan, it was fixed to the Chinese emperor to send goods to the Chinese emperor each year (it did not stop until the Qing Dynasty清朝 in China).
These tong Chinese have been wearing Chinese clothing in Japan (But Japan lacks resources. The cloth material is rough). They build a Chinese Tang -style building in Japan. Chinese coins appear in Japan. Chinese etiquette (including kneeling and chopsticks, etc.). Use China's governance system and religious culture (Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism to Japan).
Since the beginning, the official language of Japan is Chinese language and Chinese characters (only the Chinese royal family and nobles use and learn). Japanese history uses Chinese characters to record (classical Chinese). It mainly records the life of Chinese officials and nobles in Japan.
And civilians are local indigenous Japanese. They speak Japanese language. There is no characters.
Ancient Korean Peninsula and northern Vietnam. It is closer to China. China is more direct about its governance. The situation is similar to Japan.
In Japan, there are many large tombs (and unearthed cultural relics) of ancient Chinese. These tombs are also built by traditional Chinese methods. But the Japanese have denied the fact that ancient Chinese originally established in Japan.
This is because Japan has become an independent country in modern times. The history of more great Japanese nations needs to be built. This is the same as Korea and Vietnam.

A very decent presentation - I like the timeline across the top of the page as you go through all the different eras and ages, and the clarity of Japan studying Chinese writing/central gov't, then Chinese studying in Japan as it dealt with the West a bit better than China had done earlier. And it's difficult to sort out China-Korea-Japan//Japan-Korea-China (and Taiwan and Vietnam)... but if people can go over it often enough, it can become as easy as sorting out Greek-Roman-Celtic-Germanic etc. in Europe..

The Tokugawa bakufu didn’t appreciate losing their ruling power to this influence and shut their ports to western countries.
Japanese military technology suffered as a result. They were still using muskets when the Americans showed up with automatic weapons as you see in the Last Samurai. This is pretty much how they ended up cow-towing to the Americans in the 19th century.

OK I accept your long list of translation history in China. But the problem wasn’t there. The problem was the way of utilizing those knowledges in whole society.
Many foreigners translated the Western literatures into Chinese. But China had never utilized those effectively. Those knowledges stayed in a state like… entertainment of intellectuals who were extreme minority.
But Japan was different. With the background of much higher literacy rate, Japan imported such knowledge from China and translate many more Western literatures uniquely, and utilized those knowledges effectively and modernized its society quickly.
As the result, China couldn’t modernize its society by itself and reimported such Western knowledge from Japan.

Ok there was the extremely heated debate on internet about the origins of the Hanbok, it was indeed influenced by Chinese culture, especially modern day Hanbok (but developed by its own, I will tell more later on that). Modern day Hanbok is heavily influenced by Ming dynasty clothing, just do a comparison side by side, I'm not an expert on it so I just made my observations, but I know for sure about the Daopao 道袍 which in Korean is Dopo 도포 which has the same Hanja 道袍. The Chinese (Ming dynasty) Daopao and the Dopo are very very similar but they have differences. The Dopo is a bit more shorter than the Daopao, it has square sleeves, the collar neck is much more narrow. I personally think that the Korean dopo is much better than the Daopao and more practical as it is shorter and the collar neck is not massively big.

In fact, nobles and royalty generally viewed their language as a dialect of Chinese, ignoring the fact that they had to do a mental translation every time they spoke "vernacular" (common Japanese) or write things down (since court Japanese was obviously not Chinese and at this time their writing system was taken from China but not yet modified to suit their own language better). But while I don't think Imperial Japan, Tang China or Qing China were perfect cultures, I do agree that overthrow of the Qing was not an improvement and China had pretty much been a soulless ghoul since 1911 with the creation of the Republic of China and by the time the ROC was a reasonable working state, it was a rump state not controlling mainland China.

From a feint into a slip and a kicking from the hip
      Everybody was kung fu fighting,
Those cats were fast as lightning
In fact, it was a little bit frightening
But they fought with expert timing . . .

Tbh yes there are obvious similarities but the difference seems more significant than neighboring European countries (like Spain to Portugal). That’s because the languages of China and Japan are not genetically related and unlike Europe there were not much communications between royal/rulers families through marriages.

Yes they are not related. Just like adoption. You can adopt someone who is not your family. Japan "adopted" Kanji and Chinese ideas into their culture.

China to East Asia = Rome to Europe = Persia to Middle East = India to Southeast Asia (though since they were in the middle of the trade routes. China also have influences on Southeast Asia)
