  • A Heart promotional film about the making of the Little Queen album cover and live footage from their Seattle Memorial Stadium concert August 31,1977. This promo was shown in early 1978 on the Midnight Special TV show which had live performances in the 70s. They would often tack on promo videos or interviews along with the live show. Little Queen was released on May 14, 1977 with Barracuda, Kick It Out, and Little Queen being radio hits. Barracuda peaked at #11 on the Billboard chart. Little Queen sold over 3 million records and had also appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine in July 1977. Their Dreamboat Annie album released in 1976 was still on the charts with their hits "Magic Man" and "Crazy On You," and they had re-released their Magazine album in 1978 which included the hit "Heartless," thus they had three albums on the charts at once--an impressive feat.
    To paraphrase their new autobiography Kicking & Dreaming about this photo shoot, this wasn't their favorite album cover. It's my favorite. Ann didn't like that they chose a photo of her not smiling and she and Nancy joked that she was always made to look "fierce and raw and Nancy as ethereal and angelic." Nancy blamed this on the stereotypes of hair color. Both were clearly fierce and raw in performances, and on their quieter songs Ann's vocals are ethereal and angelic.
    Ann describes the photo shoot:
    "We were in Los Angeles at the time and we discovered that in Hollywood we could rent anything, including a gypsy wagon and a goat. We shot the album cover in Elysian Park in Los Angeles. The guys in the band had fun doing it because it was different from how they usually dressed on stage. With their beards and long hair, they looked like they already belonged to a different century. Nothing that we rented looked good on Ann, so she just wore her own clothes. We wanted it to be completely authentic, but there is one place where you can see a zipper on Ann's boot. And though the cover looked "back to nature," Elysian Park surrounds Dodger Stadium, so our gypsy camp was right next door to the ballpark."
    Having already extensively toured for years, '78 found them playing big festivals and shows with big name male-dominated bands. Cal Jam 2 on March 18, 1978 was attended by ~250k-300k people, and other bands such as Aerosmith, Ted Nugent, Santana, etc. were there. On July 4th weekend in 1978 they played at Texxas Jam at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, again with some of the same bands and the popular newcomers Van Halen. Another feature of Heart's live shows were their covers of Led Zeppelin songs, probably more of a variety of Led Zeppelin songs than any other popular rock band. Ann says Robert Plant was an influence on her singing, and I'd say she was a great female counterpart to Plant.
    Gypsies Indeed: Ann and Nancy lived in Seattle but because their father was in the military they moved all over the world to more than 20 homes before finally coming back to Seattle. Perhaps all this picking up and moving, changing schools, and finding new friends helped them adapt to their constant touring and changes in scenery. As teens they saw the Beatles in Seattle and wanted to be like them. They honed their instrument skills and played at any place they could, whether a church function or local festival. Their parents were very supportive too. Their story to success is like many other bands of the 70s who began playing at clubs, school gyms, fairs--wherever they could get paid, if they did get paid. They traveled across Canada building a following and got a great break opening for Rod Stewart up there.
    Since they formed in 1972 (when Ann joined and it was called Hocus Pocus) and then officially became Heart in 1973, they have gone through several personnel changes. Founder and lead guitarist Mike Fisher began focusing on the management side of the band in 1974. Nancy joined them in 1974. The 1977 the line-up here is Roger Fisher (lead guitar), Steve Fossen (bass, percussion), Howard Leese (guitar, bass, keyboards, etc.), Michael Derosier (drums), and Ann and Nancy. Heart was a band, and though Ann and Nancy wrote a majority of the songs as far as lyrics and melody, the charging intro to Barracuda, for example, was a creation of Roger Fisher and Mike Derosier. Heart's success was built by all their members.
    Ann and Nancy are both multi-instrumentalists which includes the flute, harmonica, various string and percussion instruments, and piano. After a career lull in the early 1980s, Heart recovered with another string of Top 40 hits and Grammy nominations. In 2013 they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

    Nice... Love the old Heart of the '70s. First saw them at my high-school Valentines Day dance. Kitsilano High in Vancouver. I think they were paid $1000 for that gig which was an outrageous amount for a student council back then.
    Back before recording Dreamboat Annie, at Mushroom Studios just down the street from my place, they were know mostly as a Zeppelin cover band. They nailed it. Some people said the played Zeppelin better that Zeppelin. I don't know about that but they were great.
    I saw them as an opening act in the Pacific Coliseum then as a headliner there. Last Heart show I saw was 2nd night of a 3 night stand to end a tour at the Seattle Arena.
    It was fun watching there career take off and following it for a decade or so. I still have my old vinyl first pressings including a numbered picture disc, ticket stubs and t-shirts.
    Thanks for a post that brings back so many fond memories. Cheers, eh!

      Hi Hank, you're welcome. That's cool you got to see them in 1977 while they were on fire and it was the original band (the best members in my opinion). Ann's singing wasn't much different than the record to me. I didn't get to see them at that time but in more recent years, but I did get the Little Queen album then and still have it. I read their somewhat recent autobiography and that was good, quick reading. You might want to check it out. They really worked hard to get to that point. Cheers!

    Loved the clips at 11:21 with everyone running to grab the front seat on the field. Did we really look that little/young back them? So many pairs of Landlubber jeans. I wish I could snap my finger and go back in time. I would relive all three nights seeing Zeppelin in NY.

      vahram ardashir You're welcome. What other classic rock bands do you like?
      I didn't see your reply if it was written after the last two replies I made. I mentioned I was turning off the thread notifications. I don't want to be tempted to respond to the lying and intellectually lazy Takht who is harassing me on another thread too besides that one. I clearly had spelled everything out to him and he didn't refute points nor look at any of the links I gave him. His whole attitude is bad and anti-intellectual, plus he's just nasty. I've devoted too much time to studying the Persian Empire to be treated that way. (And there's still lots more to know.)
      So, sorry, I didn't read it since muted the thread. Are you a descendant of Ardashir I? (; That was the peak of Persia so he'd be a good king to be related to. His successor son Shapur I did a lot of good stuff too.
      Anyway, this is about music and I'm curious what other music you like. Where are you located? If you told me I forgot because I've been talking to several foreigners.
      Have a great day.

    • @Grendelmonster8u
      @Grendelmonster8u  Před 8 lety

      +vahram ardashir Hi. If you are speaking of me I'm not a guy. (;
      Those are great choices of bands of course. I have a lot of Aerosmith videos but most are locked up. They are pretty druggy concerts from the 1970s. They were my first rock concert in 1977...5th row from the stage. Things were wilder at rock concerts back then. Today they're almost "family friendly." People bring their little kids to expose them to good music.
      I am a fan of all those you said except for Coven, who I don't know. Gary Moore was an underrated and less known guitarist to the general public but he was excellent. I like the Rolling Stones, Queen, Beatles, and many others. Jimi Hendrix is a huge favorite but the copyrights are so hard that I can't make a video. His estate is so mean that nearly all the studio music is no longer on You Tube. There used to be a lot of great videos...people made really cool artsy ones.
      I listen to Mike Bloomfield lately. A top guitarist from the 60s. An example:
      czcams.com/video/gIArmP6HcZk/video.html
      I like nearly all kinds of music including foreign instrumental and classical music. (Much of the world hasn't produced the rock music like England and the US that is so universally liked. There was the Holland group Golden Earring that was famous for Radar Love and Twilight Zone hit songs. )
      On You Tube there are a lot of good things to see even if there is a lot of junk. I don't watch junk. Animals are one of the most popular videos watched. People can make a good amount of money off videos too if they get a lot of viewers. Some girl does make-up lessons and makes lots of money.

    • @Grendelmonster8u
      @Grendelmonster8u  Před 8 lety

      +vahram ardashir Your English is fine and I have no problem understanding you. If you make mistakes they are sentence construction issues such as not capitalizing the first letter of each sentence. I don't know what computer you're using or if it's a phone, but I hate typing on my iPAD.
      People are different in every country--dumb, smart, conservative, liberal, and so on. It is difficult too for those who know what life was like before Islamic rule. I wish freedom to choose one's personal decisions, not force religion or people who are stuck in their ways dictating how others should live. People are happier that way. I see nothing wrong with being proud of Iran's history. I see Arabs say things about "the Persians" or Shi'ites. I see Pakistanis be mean about Indians...so it goes.
      I think it goes way back to when some Arabs were wily and more violent in temperament, at least some of them were, and some Persians noted that. King Hormizd was killed by a Bedouin when he went there on a hunting trip. When I watched a movie on the history of Islam they said Umar was a drinker and a brawler thus he'd get into physical fights. ((:
      I'm glad you like Mike Bloomfield. I have this Super Sessions album that also has Stephen Stills on one side. Al Kooper is the great keyboard player. Mike plays on one side because he was too out of it to play on the other so Stephen played. I have a video for Stephen Stills, and if you know he was part of Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills & Nash, and very talented.
      czcams.com/video/SKgHhKmQZ50/video.html
      I don't know if you know the song Dear Mr. Fantasy by Traffic but Mike also does a good cover of it with a cool bit of the Beatles's Hey Jude. If you like it then check out Traffic with Steve Winwood and incredible musician.
      czcams.com/video/gmzN3KayWU8/video.html
      Crosby, Stills & Nash also did a great cover of Dear Mr. Fantasy.
      czcams.com/video/0wM_qR6Yihk/video.html.
      It's too bad you don't get rock/pop bands in Iran anymore because I saw Crosby, Stills & Nash last year for my birthday and they still sound so good. I'm a fan of Jeff Beck too.
      I'll have to check out Coven though I'm not really into satanic stuff. Thanks for the suggestions.
      I have a video of Jefferson Airplane's White Rabbit. I love the album Surrealistic Pillow.
      I should be going to sleep, it's almost 3:00 a.m. I stay up too late all the time.

      That's great that you took that. Not a lot of people did that and I know someone took a murky one at a Led Zeppelin concert and I saw one of the Stones in the early 70s in Italy that these two Italian fans did--one with the camera another with a recorder. It becomes invaluable and rare. Heck, many of us didn't even take a Kodak Instamatic to concerts. Thanks for sharing. Glad you enjoyed the video.
      I put music to my home 8mm films on YT though a couple were eventually muted for copyrighted songs which ticked me off because they were OK for a long time. If you wanted to you could add Heart music just to have a background so people aren't watching silence. Just a suggestion.

    Seattle Memorial Stadium August 31,1977....My very first concert, Does anybody have a cleaner copy of this ?

    • @Grendelmonster8u
      @Grendelmonster8u  Před 6 lety

      That's cool that you went and it that it was filmed. How was it to you? How old were you then? My first rock concert was Aerosmith in 1977 when I was 11 and it was in the 5th row. Quite an eye-opening experience! I didn't get to see Heart back then, but I had this record and still do. My then favorite song, not on this album, was Magic Man. I used to sing to it into my hairbrush. Their 2012 autobiography _Kicking & Dreaming_ was good reading.
      The Official Heart YT channel doesn't even have a clean copy and they themselves probably copied it off You Tube. These were done by local TV and radio stations, so Heart has no ownership and so many of these old TV station ones were lost, an employee copied them, and then it was copied and copied like people did with bootleg cassette tapes and cameras, and then fans filmed their TV or recorded the radio. The Heart Channel doesn't even have the park Little Queen interview just the concert part and it's just like this one. In my opinion, the bands should be happy for this. The Cal Jam footage was disputed by producers, companies and bands back then so we've never gotten the full concert with all the bands.
      I was so bummed that I had another video that I put on here in 2013 with a 90s interview with Nancy showing how to play the intro to Crazy On You, and then I combined old footage of 1977 with a vocal interview with her talking about it, and then I showed her playing it at a 2013 concert. After 5 years this past January I got my first take-down strike in 11 years of having a YT account. It was the 90s interview that was the issue. This has happened to other videos of mine-I had them on for years and suddenly the copyright companies either muted them or told me to take it off and I disputed a couple but those didn't entail strikes. The part of the interview wasn't showing anyone but her and I didn't know who did it. ):
      I'm surprised the Heart channel doesn't have the Oakland, CA park album cover photo shoot. It's neat to see how they ended up with the photo on the album cover. Thanks for watching!

      Huh? Why did they have a problem with that? I remember Ronnie Wood of the Rolling Stones had a roll of toilet paper on his headstock with some of I hanging down. This was when he was with The Faces with Rod Stewart as lead singer. There's a video of that concert. Jack Bruce of Cream in the 1960s is on a TV show with something dangling from his headstock. It's a video of them playing "I Fee Free" at the Beat Club in Germany. So what's the problem they had with carnations??

    • @i.p.knightly149

    • @Grendelmonster8u
      @Grendelmonster8u  Před 6 lety

      I still haven't figured out what bass player Jack Bruce of Cream has hanging from his guitar in this video, but he was manly. I'm sure in the 60s people put flowers or such on their guitars at times during the Flower Power years, who knows. Jimi Hendrix's guitar at the Monterey Pop Festival was painted with flowers, vines and hearts on it-the one he ended up "sacrificing" there by setting it on fire. No one can say Hendrix wasn't manly. (:
      I thought of this when I was at the store yesterday; a guy behind me had a bouquet of flowers, I presume to give to some woman. Women like flowers, they get easily attracted to musicians, they would think it sweet and the guitar player has a romantic side = sex. Lol. Your bandmates are wusses. ((;

      That's cool your dad filmed the moon landing. My father saved the newspaper from the day after and the newspapers then were very large sized, but no film.
      It's funny that the news stations put them out this way. All I can think is that may have not stored them well and they deteriorated or they borrowed your dad's moon landing film.

      ROFL!! 😂😂😂
      Dad's Apollo 11 copy turned out to be pretty much crap with more horizontal lines than the "live" footage! Fairly unwatchable...but sounded great. lol
      Yeah, I remember needing to have two fingers (play & record) ready at a moments notice for songs off the radio. I actually caught one of the 1st announcements of John Lennon's death that way. Still got it, and listen to it on the occasional Dec. morning. 💔

      Wow cool, I see you like "Train kept a rollin" covers! Have you heard Sugarloaf's instrumental version? It's on the same album as Green Eyed Lady. It's my favorite! Or how about Aerosmith's cover, it rocks. 👍
