      I agree! I have recently learned of a partially completed Francis Turbine system that will be completed in the Spring after the snows melt. I’m looking forward to filming it and I may do a video about the work done so far with footage that the workers shot.

    When I got my state permit for "non consumptive use" for my little 147' of fall, 3' feed line, 850 watt grid tied Harris Hydro pelton wheel setup 16 years ago all installed and running. I invited the rancher below my mountain property who has the REAL water rights to come up and take a look. I don't leak a drop, 100% of the water I take out goes back into the creek, if anything, he probably gets a tad more water as my 90 GPM isn't seeping into the creek bed or evaporating! He looked at my amp gauge, 33 amps at 26 VDC, and then looked down to his place where we could see the sprinklers operating as normal, and we both laughed! As a pilot, in a rural mountainous area, it kinda drives me crazy seeing from the air all the potential for systems like yours that are not being taken advantage for making power.

      As a former private pilot I agree with you. Congrats on having a functioning system. Nice, isn’t it!? Over the 27 years my equipment has been running, we’ve generated over 518,000 kWh and it still just keeps spinning. 375 megawatts of that have come since moving the system to our creek and turn it on in 2015. This video you commented on isn’t mine, I only documented this one.       @@mrhydrohead I will check it out. Yes, hydro is great, nothing beats gravity! PV is a bit more hassle free but not near as satisfying for some reason. I have both, and never pay a bill other than my connection fee;. My mountain stream varies so much I designed it around the lower part of the year/flow, so it's small but consistent as in keeping the supply line full.

    Thank you for this video - there are so many different approach for Micro Hydro solutions around the world - the other day I was watching one from Japan used in 3rd world countries. About your videos they are so enlightening and gives hope and encouragement to everyone to build one. this video did take long time on production but I read in below comments on your health concern. So looking forward for your upcoming projects/videos.

    Yes! Thank you for sharing this excellent video, I have been talking about this for years, but this clearly shows the concept of microhydro w/ irrigation water with proof. I could never have engineered such an elaborate system though haha. Nicely done collab, hopefully they will expand these sorts of projects.

      @@mrhydrohead my Uncle has that sepsis isnt that rare and odd youre the second person ive heard had it..As fae as the virus the media made a mountain out of a molehill in most cases. Our entire family made it to the other side just fine and one of my family members has congestive heart failure Mayne God was on our side on this one I'm not a Dr so it could effect others differently anyway.       @@mrhydrohead Yeah I had read about your health issue in others comments but didnt know how to say that I am very happy you are recovering. I also didn't say that I have watched all your videos 2x. My interest is how the stream that you get water from evolves as the drought breaks up and how much erosion occurs. The erosion you have from the the yearly run off there is crazy.

      @@walterhiegel3020 Yeah the erosion is nuts! I will be posting an update to show what occurred in my absence on our system. I'm not sure I have enough footage to make it interesting as I'm relying mostly on footage my contractor shot when I was in hospital, but I'm going to try. Footage from an upcoming Francis Turbine video shows a great design of intake however given my progressing erosion I'm uncertain if the cost to build and install something similar would work. As the blind man once said "we shall see"

    Thanks for the information about other systems. I had expected it to be a turbine (perhaps a centrifugal) that generated power when the sprinkler was operating.

      Hey thanks for the good wishes. As you might have seen in earlier comments, I spent 13 months in 2020-1 away from home in hospital/rehab for a staph sepsis infection that came from dirty leads on a pacemaker install. I still have debilitations from the ordeal, but not as bad as the alternative would have been. 60% of people die from sepsis. Oh well, it is what it is. More vids to come. Thanks for watching!

    I wish I could do hydro here, but in the area of Florida where I live, it's just too flat.
    I could do a pumped hydro reservoir, but it would take a lot of work to build the raised area. And then there's the problem with evaporation.

      If there is moving water, there is a way to harness at least some power. Question is whether it is substantial enough to justify the cost and effort. Thx for watching just the same!

      @@mrhydrohead Yeah, problem is there isn't a steady supply of water flow except during hurricane season. Altho, that's when grid supply could become iffy :P

      Oddly, after posting the previous 2 comments, it poured here for 2 days. And there's cargo hold full of water I could be tapping into. Plenty of flow for the water wheel idea.
      Problem is, we only get this amount of rain about 5 times a year. All the other times we might only get a couple inches, which isn't enough to raise the water level/flow

      @@mrhydrohead I love hydro power. Our family operates two plants. One Francis and one a Kaplan. 400 kW total. It’s interesting to see smaller hydro making sense as well. I wish I had a creek by my house but I can’t have it all haha. Thank you.

      @@Mike-kr5dn 400kW!!! Is that direct output or kWh/day? Either way thats a s#*tload of juice. Hope you are grid tied as I can't imagine how you could put that much to good use. Where are the systems located? And how long in service?

      @@mrhydrohead It’s 400kW direct output. It’s far it’s in Czech Republic. The Francis turbines are actually 2 and are from 1920, renovated and working fine with just a new generator and small repairs to the runners(new coating). The Kaplan (from 2005) is running on the waste water coming from the Francis turbines, so the water which is diverted from a small river is used twice. Yes it is a grid tie system, we produce around 1.5 GWh a year or 1.5 million kWh.

    Why are they using Irrigation water? Is it surplus water? Or does it get used for its purpose down the line?

      They have an allotment of water that is used for irrigating their fields. Whatever portion they need for irrigating their fields they of course use, but their water right allotment exceeds that need and they use any remainder for harnessing power. That extra water then continues on to the next user down the line. Thx for watching!

      That sounds like a cool dream. I've thought about aquaponics for some self sufficiency but my initial plan got sidetracked in 2020 when I landed in hospital/rehab for 13 months. Keep looking and don't give up. Long term you could be greatly rewarded. Best of luck to you. ; )

    Thank you for sharing. I would have insulated the whole building with rockwool and put up cement board instead of plywood. Fireproofing :) we need more micro hydro i the us..

      That is true, but this system effectively uses the grid as its battery by spinning their meter backwards and thereby lowering the utility bill. This is not uncommon with solar systems as well. It also avoids the maintenance and replacement headaches of batteries. Thanks for watching.

      I didn't design the system, but it might possible with an Electronic Load Controller. I think the intention was to create a low maintenance system that feeds the grid. I'm not sure they use the power directly, but instead use it as credits to lower there power bill.

    Interesting setup, question that comes to mind is cost of the setup/maintenance vs output. I think anytime we can harness energy from the environment with damage is awesome

      Interesting part of this system is that the owner got a few grants that ended up with their cost out of pocket being about $15k. And the 6 months operation of the system every year creates enough credits produced to pay off their full yearly power bill. I've been told the system is nearly fully automatic and requires minimal maintenance. I agree on minimally invasive systems. Living with my own system is truly a joy. Thx for watching!

    That is a nice installation. The USDA tuns out very good work in spite of being a Federal Government outfit. I worry the president of diverting irrigation water to make electricity for the grid will lead to the loss of water rights for irrigation. The ever-growing population with their needs for drinking water, green grass in their yard, and water in their swimming pools, showerers, flush toilets, etc in the west is as much a problem as drought.

      The property owner has had the irrigation water right for decades. The water they don't use for irrigation flows on to the next lower elevation property as it always has. The benefit of utilizing that flow provides power to the grid and credits offset costs for power in the months when irrigation water is shut down. I agree that the general population is not mindful of how water is a limited resource and often lacks an attitude of conservation. Thx for watching!

Like what's the low side and high side... and average that it makes? Also, what is the generator capable of making? Also, what does a generator like yours cost? Thanks.

      We consistently make 163-173kWh/day (6800-7200w) with the Winter flow setting and around 100-108kWh in the other seasons at a lower flow setting because we don’t need as much. The load controller is set to have a 4500w dump load into either hot water heater or baseboards in spring through fall and that is where we run consistently. The generator is a 10 kW unit so we’re never pulling the full capacity from it. I bought it way back in 1996 so prices are far higher today. Lima that mfg it was bought out years ago by Marathon Electric which I’ve just now seen got bought out by Regal Rexnord.     This is a brilliant system. One question I have though, it seems to require a lot of capital expenditure upfront, so what time does it take to pay for itself? I presume there are maintenance costs as well.

      I don't own this particular system so I can't comment on maintenance, but my own system showcased on the majority of my MrHydrohead channel has run consistently for 27+ years with nearly 0 maintenance. In capital payback you have to factor in whether the property is off grid and how much it would cost to run power lines in as a comparison. The system we own initially cost $25k in 1996 when power lines would have run ~$140k to bring in added to the resulting monthly bills. Our redesign was about an additional $55k vs ~$250-300k to run lines in at that time in 2013 and our redesign nearly quintupled our power generation.
      This system runs on irrigation water and part of the owners motivation was to utilize the full measure of their water rights so as not to lose them. She also was able to get grants to install the system. There are no batteries to maintain and the utility connection effectively is used as a battery. Rebate rates with the utility power meter running backwards vary widely depending on state rules. With it this system is basically a net zero utility cost over the years total bills.
      All that being said, any micro hydro setup is costly as you are paying for all future power to be generated up front, so the longer you operate it the better the deal. All the more reason to use high quality components. Thanks for watching!

      @@mrhydrohead Thanks for the detailed response. It makes sense of course if you are starting up as not connected to the grid because the system more than offsets the connection costs. If you are connected to start with then I guess you'll have to do a lot of maths to determine financial feasibility of building such a system. It will take a lot of years of grid cost savings to pay back ca $50K installation cost. Depends on your annual power consumption and future plans. Anyways, thatnks again for the response.

      I don't own this system, so I don't know how much the total system cost. Even if I did provide cost figures, it would not be of much benefit as each system is unique to the chosen site and costs can vary widely depending on numerous factors. First there is the potential power available at the particular site which dictates if the desired use of that power is practical. Who will design the system? What will be the best equipment and materials available to meet the unique requirements of the most beneficial and practical design? Then there are expenses involved in acquiring water rights which are likely different in each state or country depending on a pro se (self applied) application or hiring lawyer to work on them. Who will do the labor to install the system? Is it your own sweat equity, friends that can help, or hired labor and at what rate? How much time will it take to install? What materials can be accessed? Reused or new pipe, copper or aluminum wire? How long a length of wire? What building(s) will house the equipment? What transformers, batteries, load regulators, power shunts, or utility net metering are available and/or appropriate to the particular site? All of theses factors can add to the costs and it would be naive of me to present a one size fits all price.
      One must be clear that installing a system is creating an asset which would likely provide power for a lifetime. Can it be financed over time and does that cost make economic sense when compared to running utility lines to an off grid property? Will a local utility be willing to purchase excess power and at what rate? Undertaking a project of this size is not for the faint of heart. It IS a large commitment both financially and in effort and time.
      My first system (1.5kw) which I own and documented on this channel cost ~$25k and was installed in the mid 90’s. Redesigning and moving the same equipment to a more reliable water source was also documented on my channel and took place between 2013-2015 and added another ~$55k but boosted the useable power by a factor of 5 to 7.5kw. WHEN a project occurs is also a factor governing cost. Inflation impacts everything involved and the fact that I intend these videos to remain on the internet for years to come and provide some clear eyed guidance to people that are serious about their own intentions, this dictates that I not mislead them with cost estimates willynilly.
      Sorry to go on and on here. I know the system in this video was funded with the aid of grants.

      I never did any math by looking at the displays and the numbers provided. Seems like you did. Something to remember about this system is that it only runs during the irrigation season which means it would greatly decrease the average kW output. The system also likely produces less power whenever the irrigation turrets are operating as the flow would be greatly reduced. Of course the solenoid design is programmed to maintain pressure in the line by shutting down nozzles at that time. Sorry for the slow answer I've been focused on other things.

    4:45 thats a pretty small pipe compared to the dimensions of the system. I would be interested to know more details about it.

      Each of the turbines has 4 feed pipes of the same dimension, 8 total between the two turbines. Each of them is about 1.5-2” diameter. It’s true that the combined cross sectional dimension of those 8 is likely smaller than that of the feed manifold. However, the short length of those 8 doesn’t reduce the pressure appreciably via pipe friction, if that is your concern. Also the diameter of each pipe is considerably larger than the largest nozzle which could be attached at the end of the feed pipes to drive the Turgo Turbines. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching!

      @Jon on the two boxes we see opened, both have visible ground bus bars. The second controller box with the caps even has a ground sticker under the bus.
      As an aside, being that is is a mixed system with AC and DC, there are some engineering considerations regarding grounding that differ on a case to case basis because of potential available DC fault current.

      Not sure I understand your question. Pressure occurs in a penstock due to gravity. For each 2.31 ft of drop 1 psi occurs. That is for static non moving water and is called static pressure. Pipe friction upon moving water would reduce that and that is known as active pressure. Hope this answers your question. Thx for watching!

    Please do not speak about climate change because it was a lot of rain in 2015 but draught in 2019 or what it was. We measure climate change over centuries and some idiots over decades but a couple of years.... The public is so easily fooled. We can of course try to decrease dependence on fossile fuels but it needs to be intelligent. I see here in my own country, Norway people putting solar panels on the roof. They will break even in 100 years som good luck with that investment. And yo move the CO2 emission to China doesn't help anyone....

      I agree that it doesn't make sense to install solar in a region where the yield is not worth the investment. However I do take issue with being called an idiot for viewing what is occurring as climate change. My own property has seen a direct impact losing 30-40% of conifer trees due to beetle infestations resulting from consistently warmer winters. The beetles prosper due to not being killed off by sub zero temps. The SW United States is in the throws of a decades long "drought", so it is not just a few years. I see climate change as real due to my own perceptions and having studied the topic to base my understanding on science. Climate deniers can dream on.
