Awesome catches! The stories are always the best part. Look like all 3 of you guys have great stories to hold onto. And some nice fish to go with it ;)
Haleeboot angling is so fun. I like the same rig you got; the "Canadian" reel with a steelhead medium heavy 8'6" rod. I use basic inexpensive 40 lb. monofilament with a diamond jig smeared with smellyjelly and a squid skirt. I like 25-40lb. Haleeboot. I love cod and rockfish too. I'm subscribed.
I subscribed because you took a cool kid fishing with you. This kid will grow up to be responsible and a good steward of the sea. (I also learned a few things)
You can take a small size paint roller load it with scent like pro cure and then slip the squid shirts over the roller. Halibut have an excellent sense of smell and it may take drawing them in from quire a distance. The more Scent you have the better. Fresh salmon bellies particularly the oiler salmon makes awesome halibut bait as well. Not the brightest fish, and when they want to eat there amazingly aggressive.
Where did you get the information on them changing sexes at 60lbs ??? I am a little skeptical on that......but your video is top quality and entertaining even made me laugh. Nicely crafted.
Why that lingcod was in the halibuts mouth is because the ling bit on your bait first and that halibut attacked the ling and subsequently hooked himself. its called piggybacking and its common on catching lingcod but i have never heard of a halibut piggybacking in. I am sure its because of your large hook size that fish was landed.
load A paint roller into a big hoochie and then load the paint roller with pro cure Butt juice. creating a oil slick draws butts that may be a mile away but have great smelling abilities. right eating size is the under 100lbers
his set up on the spreader bar will be a big tangled mess that is a pain...... the line with the hook should be shorter then the length of the of the spreader bar so it doesn't tangle.
Randy Cruz if you can hold halibut by the tail and massage the white side along the spine it will calm down and you’re buddy can Pearce through the spine behind the head,he bleeds well and stops thrashing:DEAD!!
FYI, Pacific halibut do not change sexes as you stated. In fact, most male halibut sexually mature at age 8 while females don't mature until age 12. Females, however, live longer than males. The largest Pacific halibut weighed just 55 pounds. Therefore, if you catch a halibut over 60 pounds, it is a female. Hope that helps clear things up. John, from www.halibut.net
Flounders are smaller they are called Halibut NOT flounders flounders and Halibut look alike but different species and they're both bottom fish so that's why they look alike
100th comment on this video. I should like win something for that. Anyways I am going halibut fishing in two days out of Newport and I hope that I catch some nice fish. And seriously I should win something
There are a number of species even in freshwater that are Hermaphrodites. Tench and Carp, for example. It was thought at the time when Chris Yeats caught the British record carp of 50+ lbs that it had be an hermaphrodite due to many of the Redmire syndicate members, believing the fish to have been a male. It is thought that environmental conditions could trigger this happening like over fishing to give one form of change, where when a species like fish are under pressure they can change sex to redress the sex imbalance. I not so sure like some other comments on here, as to whether there is an exact size when this sex change happens.
You should never let a halibut "play" in the surface. It can only swim one way, down or up. When it´s coming up you want to hook it as soon as possible so it don´t get the chance to swim down. If it´s big enough (wich these are not) the line will brake and the poor halibut will have the hook stuck in it´s mouth....
You're the first guys I've ever seen use classic mooching rods for halibut! All the power to yea but I love ugly sticks! Great video.
I recently went halibut fishing in Alaska on the Alaskan gulf. It was my first time fishing and I had a blast catching most of them within my group.
Awesome catches! The stories are always the best part. Look like all 3 of you guys have great stories to hold onto. And some nice fish to go with it ;)
Miss the deep blue sea. Never know what you may catch . Great guys !!

my god these are awesome halibuts. i once caught small sized halibut and gave it away to someone.
What was the thought process on the rod and reel choice. Lighter tip, and more control over the drags?
Thanks for sharing ,hope to see you there in 2016 and now the ? Do you get lots of shark since you are at the bottom?
I use the spreader bar but how do you rig up the other technique with the 16 ounce bar and rubber squid
You guys are awesome
Great video. I also like to use squid. One question, why the long rods? Why not use short "boat" rods?

Kudos for taking the kid with you. Much respect.
