It doesn't happen often, but it does happen. Him showing his back allows him to collect himself because it isn't a regular occurrence and the cadence of his motions are used to keep time while on watch. Also, a unit turning it's back to you is a sign that whatever was said was nothing personal, however direct.
@HR H I agree with you, the dead can't hear us. But you shouldn't just talk about anything at any funeral, and definitely shouldn't be laughing or squeaking like the woman in the vid.
I went in February on a school trip and we were all scared to so much as move a jacket or cough . I couldn't imagine anyone laughing at something like this
Khloe Bannergee Moving, and normal things like a cough or a sneeze are not a problem. The Guard was speaking to the disrespect being shown by laughing. This a solemn duty, and place. I am sure if you had to sneeze or cough, or if you were speaking very quietly about what was happening, there would be no issues. Of course, sometimes people react to the stress of the moment in different manners, and it is possible that the young lady was laughing due to a nervous reaction to being there, which is probably not like any other place or activity she had ever experienced before. Nevertheless, laughter is not tolerated. I have served with a Tomb Guard in one of the units I was in, HHC 505 PIR, 82nd ABN DIV. He was a Sergeant First Class (SFC) at the time, and all Tomb Guards wear the Tomb Badge as a permanent award. As I understand it, they have many requirements and restrictions, some of which follow them for the rest of their lives. These men, and now women, are dedicated to their Service, the Army, and their Country without hesitation or equal. They are completely professional, and their love for their country is without question. Ever. I have been there also, and I have also been blessed with the opportunity to command the color guard for the 4th of July ceremony at the National Cemetery in Fort Smith, AR in 1996, before I left the Army. It was one of the highest honors I could have ever asked for, among all of the honors and awards and decorations I had earned in a ten year career spanning multiple countries and hemispheres. I hope that you were able to appreciate the place you were, and what it represents. I hope that more young people like you have the chance to go to Arlington, or any National Cemetery, or the travelling Vietnam memorial, or any military memorial on any of our country's holidays, and maybe learn something of the dedication our service men and women give to our country. They do it out of love. They have long and difficult hours, they don't make a lot of money, advancements for pay and promotion slow the higher rank you earn, they sacrifice family, friends, social life, and other opportunities, all to serve OUR PEOPLE, OUR COUNTRY. Please note that I did not say "our government". While it is true they obey the officers in the chain of command, up to the Commander in Chief, the President, they do not "serve" the government. They serve the Country, the People, without regard to politics, color, religion, gender. To quote almost every Drill Sergeant or Drill Instructor across all the services: "You no longer bleed red. You bleed Red, White, and Blue. And you Bleed (insert branch here) GREEN (or BLUE)". Army Green. Marine Green. Navy Blue. Air Force Blue. God Bless you, Klhoe. @James Miller With freedom comes responsibility. No one is saying that the girl in this case is not allowed to laugh EVER. People should exercise their hard won freedoms. But there is a time and a place for everything. Arlington National Cemetery in general, and the Tomb of the Unknowns in particular, is not the place to act all stupid and fucked up. And they all retell the experience to others, who are then forewarned that when they visit to be mindful of their decorum. Only ONCE, that I know of, a contractor was escorted off the Tomb Plaza for leaning against the Tomb. So, out of 3 million visitors a year, a miniscule few must be made to understand what respect encompasses. @HR H I agree with you, the dead can't hear us. But you shouldn't just talk about anything at any funeral, and definitely shouldn't be laughing or squeaking like the woman in the vid.
I went in February on a school trip and we were all scared to so much as move a jacket or cough . I couldn't imagine anyone laughing at something like this
Khloe Bannergee
Moving, and normal things like a cough or a sneeze are not a problem. Arlington is not full of kids, it is full of men and women. Young and old who served their countries and the spouses of them.
It is a place for rememberance, respect, and reflection. It won't kill people to have just 5 MINUTES WORTH of respect. Is that too much to ask? If so, I would suggest avoiding places like this if you feel like you should be able to just act on impulse like a 2 year old.
@James Miller Bottom line: Places like Arlington National Cemetery have rules of conduct. If you don't want to follow the rules, you are free to go elsewhere.
@James Miller Nobody said anything about feelings. By the same standard, though, if freedom is absolute, then I can take my gun anywhere I like? I can walk into a hospital or a police station and just wave it around and nobody has the right to stop me, right?
@James Miller There are multiple signs at Arlington that say that. Why can't we just follow the rules?
I had to watch it twice to hear the girl laughing. The fact that something that small can set the guard off is amazing. And the fact that someone would laugh for any reason at a place like that shows how little people understand the sacrifices made for them

I was there one day when a woman went down and under the velvet rope and inside the sacred space. The guard finished his walk back to the beginning and told her he had the authority to shoot her for violating that space. It was a holiday so it was crowded. The place was hear-a-pin-drop silent.
Good afternoon millieo. You said; "told her he had the authority to shoot her for violating that space" Why do you wish to make a WAR ZONE out of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Things like that simply do not happen because their weapons are not loaded, and lethal force would never be used to keep order at the tomb.
All these horror stories are going to scare people away from visiting Arlington and experiencing the solemnity of this honored place.
@@mark9531 ... War is a horror show and unidentifiable veterans killed in action is a horrible thing. It’s a horror for their loved ones to not have a place they can visit.
I was sharing an anecdote I observed as a visitor. What was said was a paraphrase. It happened decades ago and the guard did convey lethal force. They could certainly change policy over time. The extent of his duty to protect that space was shocking to hear.
My children’s father is buried in Arlington They take their kids and go to lay wreaths as a gesture of respect.
Unfortunately some people do not understand respect and honor for a sacred space. They do not understand the somber symbolism of the Tomb of the Unknown and need to be taught how to behave.
If they do not respect it it is good they don’t come. They can go to a theme park, not a revered cemetery if they think what they want is most important.
I’m curious what you know about the extent of commitment from the guards.
@@tm13tube Good afternoon. You said; "They do not understand the somber symbolism of the Tomb of the Unknown and need to be taught how to behave. "
Absolutely. I could not agree with you more. And, to this date, a sharp command voice order from the Sentinel is all that has been necessary to remediate a disruptive visitor. And that is a LEARNING EXPERIENCE for everyone who witnesses it.
And, no doubt, all 3 million leave with the moving emotional experience of learning the sacrifice many made for our freedom.
But reading the comments here, some may worry that if they went, the slightest sneeze, or a crying baby will be met with lethal force from the Sentinels, or being run through with his bayonet. And nothing is further from the truth.
@@tm13tube "what you know about the extent of commitment from the guards." They volunteer for this assignment. Some are new recruits, having completed basic training. And some are returning veterans from conflict areas. They are based at nearby Ft. Myer.
________________
They train for about 8 months. Then they are tested. If they pass, they are awarded Tomb Guard Identification Badge. After about a year and a have serving as a Sentinel, they are returned to regular Army duties to complete their commitment to the military.
*THIS IS IMPORTANT* They train in:
~Factual knowledge of Arlington, the Tomb, and the process for selecting the remains in the tomb
~Extraordinarily precise, meticulous preparation of their uniform
~How to "walk the mat"
________________
*Here is what they are NOT trained in*
~Marksmanship with an M14
~Hand-to-hand combat with civilians
~Take-down techniques, de-escalation, and arrest
~Civilian law enforcement
They are trained to be Ceremonial Sentinels. The are NOT trained to be Military Police guards. There are dozens of Military Police on Arlington serving as trained, armed law enforcement agents. That is not the duty of the Sentinels.
@@mark9531 I am referring to the early 80s. I’m glad times have changed.
Thank you for taking the time to teach me so many things about this elite group.
I read they do their two hour 24/7 regardless of the weather. Is that still true?
I have great respect for people who can be this disciplined.
Thank you again.
I remember for my school trip to DC we stopped here and before we left for the trip we had an assembly and it was a huge point that when we get to the Unknown Soldiers you do not speak a word.
Dammit people have no respect for any of our military even the ones ho have payed with there life’s 🙏🙏🙏🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

One day the USA will have a war again to protect the very foundations of freedom and somewhere on that battlefield the lessons of Honor & Respect will be learned again.
Apparently this is the repetitive fate of this very "stupid" animal we call humans.

My school visited the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier for a school trip a month ago and I cannot tell you how disrespectful my class was. They were talking nearly the entire time and laughing while we were there. A student from my school was yelled/scolded for crossing the boundary.

25 Years ago here in New Zealand a group of first year University students painted anti war slogans on cenotaph around the country the night before Anzac day.
Says so much for their lack of understanding.
Only happened that one year, police patrol for few nights before the Anzac day for a few years.
In the last few years the dawn service sees thousands gather in every town and city and in lock down we stood at our gates .

@Tony Samson it's an Expression, like a metaphor,
@Delbo MannyMan Because it's a historic military monument dedicated to lost, unrecognizable soldiers. The respect put behind it by the people that keep it is admirable, and I've always had an interest in other countries traditions, not forsaking my own. Maybe it's because I'm mixed, but I just like it.
