  • Maidens Harbour was the site of the landing of Robert the Bruce in 1307 upon his return from exile and the start of his successful challenge for the throne of Scotland.

    Bruce never landed in the harbour he came via the caves at culzean where they docked and walked to the then pub the cellars an old unknown pub below a now built house! I had the pleasure of drinking in that very pub years ago and it was an eary place to drink! Was never open to public and many never knew nor still do about it's existence! There's Gaelic writing on the wall inscribed in the stone presumably written by Bruce or a follower possibly

      That's Ailsa Craig - nicknamed 'Paddy's Milestone'. Famous as the source of the best rock for making curling stones.
