Still Angry After All These Years?
The original Angry Young Men - Colin Wilson and John Osborne - were accorded the kind of celebrity now exclusively reserved for rock musicians and members of the royal family. They were front-page news - courted stars of the newly-established commercial television channel: everyone wanted to know how and why they lived and wrote as they did. Wilson is still writing, with a new book recently out, and Osborne is in rehearsal for a revival of The Entertainer. Ian Hamilton talks to them about the extraordinary spring of 1956 and interviews some of the people who helped to make them famous. Also in this month's programme: John Wain , himself a veteran of the Angry Young Men, whose new collection of autobiographical essays, Dear Shadows, is just out, talks to Hamilton about his life and work; plus a Bookmark profile exploring the comic and curious contrast in the working life of Dannie Abse , poet and doctor, who has just published his first collection of poetry for five years - Ask The Bloody Horse Directors
