  • A customer asked me if I could make a fur throw &pillow from a fur coat. I said absolutely! This video focuses more on the deconstruction of the garment than the actual sewing of the throw. For more detailed instructions on layering fur/backing for creating a throw or a pillow you can watch the video here.

    Thank you for sharing this process with us! I have a fur from my mother and my girls and I have thought of making a throw from it. It's not a full length though we'll see..... Respect your detail and process.

    I NEVER knew why there was sawdust, I thought it was crumbling pelt/leather! Thank you for explaining that and this whole amazing video. ❤

    I just received a mink throw from Dinah and it’s gorgeous. What a great way to preserve an heirloom! Dinah kept me posted every step of the way and answered all my questions right away. I’m going to tell all my friends that don’t wear their mother’s furs anymore to send them to Dinah.

    Thank you for the details. I’ve never done anything like this before. I’m a quilter/longarmer. My friend from Sweden asked me to help her turn her Mothers Mink coats onto throws.

    Amazing job. You can't tell at all where you pieced your fur. The backing on the throw was perfect. I used this video as my guide to taking apart my sisters "fun fur" to create pillows for her.

    This was so helpful, my friend asked me to make an old beloved fur coat into a throw for her. So this video is great, thank you! And based on all the comments you are going to be very busy! Good for you!

    so so glad you did this!! this is EXACTLY what I have been planning on doing for the last few years. I buy old fur coats at resale shops and hope to do a few throws/blankets for gifts.

If you happen to see this comment would you mind texting me and letting me know what cold tape you used? Thank you

    Dinah, what a wonderful way to salvage the fur and make it useful to your client. Can you tell me approximately how many hours of work you put into this project (throw and pillow)?

    • @dinahsquiltshandmadesoaps7340
      @dinahsquiltshandmadesoaps7340  Před 11 měsíci +1

      I really depends on the the size & the condition of the furs. Furs that are in excellent condition go much faster! 10+ hours of work on this project. Some are faster. Furs that are in poor shape take much longer and need special handling & care.

    Amazing!
    Could you please tell me the type of stitch you used and a second option since I have a basic machine? I 'd appreciate it if you also describe the length and width, and type of needle? thanks
    in advance

    • @dinahsquiltshandmadesoaps7340
      @dinahsquiltshandmadesoaps7340  Před rokem +3

      I used a straight stitch/blanket stitch. Use something close in your machine to an overlock stitch. I used a leather needle / 12. Length about a 3.5 and the width was just enough to catch the edges. Good luck with your project Eleonora.

    What exactly is "cold tape"? Also, what type of thread did you use to sew it together? thanks

    • @dinahsquiltshandmadesoaps7340
      @dinahsquiltshandmadesoaps7340  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Cold tape is a satin like material with an adhesive on the back. No heat needed to adhere to the fur. Cut and pull off the protective backing. It's a tight tack. It helps support the edges of the fur while stitching through it. I use 100% furrier cotton thread. All can be purchased at: www.samuelbauer.com. Call them if you are interested in furrier items.

    This is cool! I didn't catch it in the video - but what size was the original coat vs. what were the dimensions of the throw when finished?

    • @dinahsquiltshandmadesoaps7340
      @dinahsquiltshandmadesoaps7340  Před rokem +1

      Not sure of the size of the Original coat, but the throw was 43 by 54 and enough was left over to make the pillow.

  • @Dakiniwoman

    Thank you for your video... I think this is a great way to recycle furs. I would have liked to know what the "cold tape" is and where to get it as well as the little clips you used. What kind of stich did you use on your sewing machine?

    • @dinahsquiltshandmadesoaps7340
      @dinahsquiltshandmadesoaps7340  Před rokem

      Cold tape a type of fabric with an adhesive on the back. It's used to stabilize the edges of when sewing fur or leather. The clips you can purchase at any craft store. Just do a search for sewing clips. I used a straight stitch and a zigzag edge or overlock edge.

    How do you know what needle and stitch to use when working with pelts on a conventional sewing machine?

    • @dinahsquiltshandmadesoaps7340
      @dinahsquiltshandmadesoaps7340  Před rokem

      The size of the needle all depends of the fur you are sewing. A fur machine uses an overcast stitch, so on a domestic machine I would use a straight stitch or a zigzag stitch. Always use a test piece of fur before you begin your project.

    I wonder if you can offer suggestion? My aunt was given a fox fur, she wants to try and make a teddy bear however the actual skin is dried out brittle! Would I just add a stablizer ? Maybe 100% cotton glued down to the pelt? Thank you for suggestions.

    • @dinahsquiltshandmadesoaps7340
      @dinahsquiltshandmadesoaps7340  Před rokem +2

      Sorry, If the fur is brittle I wouldn't use it. It will crumble when you try to sew it. You can not use iron on or heat stabilizer. Maybe you can get away with cold cloth, but over time the stabilizer will dry out and may not hold together. As for a fabric or leather glue, I am not too sure about.
