Description:
15 seconds faster than my previous run and the first run below 21 minutes.
Yet again I failed map 30, I'll blame the revenant this time as it's one of the worst spawns you can get. But it's ok, I feel like I've hardly even started, so I'll be attempting this more later. I took it safe during the last levels as I wanted to get sub 21 out of the way.
Obviously below 20 minutes would be a massive milestone, but the entire run needs to be incredibly clean for that to happen, which is extremely difficult to pull off on nightmare. As I mentioned in the last one I intend to improve this further this year, so we'll see how close I can get at least. I've got a few other runs to do meanwhile though.
Map comments:
Map 02: Made a slight change to the route here, after the first blue key door I kill the zombieguy furthest to the right before I open up the door and kill one of the shotgunners on the inside, then I'll fire at the zombieguy and shotgunners behind him while I go for the switch. It should save about 2 seconds to what I did earlier, most likely I'll take some more damage, but it's map 02 so it's no big deal.
Map 07: Messed up my initial inputs going for the rocket jump, thankfully I didn't fire a rocket and damage myself like I usually do when that happens.
Map 13: Another small change here, I use the BFG to clear out some of the imps after the first teleporter. Not sure why I haven't done this earlier, I have yet to fail the jump down to the door with this strategy. Probably because it wastes 40 cells which I can't really afford, but I've switched to rockets for the revenants by the blue key door afterwards so it's fine.
Map 17: Unlike last time I didn't have too much trouble with my visual que for the yellow key switch press, but I wasn't used to having the berserk red screen active so it wasn't ideal either.. I guess I should practice with it or avoid picking it up for next time.
Map 22: Finally a good catacombs, basically never happens.
Map 24: Grabbed some extra cells and a rad suit as I knew I was on good time, won't be doing that again now that I have sub 21.
Map 26: Grabbed green armor even though it wasn't needed.
Map 27: Hey it worked! a bit slow, could get 26-27 seconds here if all goes well.
Map 28: Again grabbed invulnerability just to be safe.
Map 29: Had an attempt yesterday where I failed the first rocket jump somehow.. it's actually the easiest rocket jump in the game, at least this run was better though.
Map 30: Still not the time I'm looking for even if I did get the 1 cycle so it's ok. I fired a bit too early, just didn't have much time to prepare because of the revenant. Decided to take the slower method for the 3rd rocket as it's quicker at activating the elevator and I need to hit 1 more.

The way Zero Master uses that BFG 9000 is pure poetry in motion. 17:08 he lights up a whole row of imps before they can even see it coming. And 17:50, imagine being down in that pit with a BFG ball coming your way the instant the floor opens.

previous run had some really bad luck and some pretty obvious mistakes. Basically look at map 27 where it was improved by 14 seconds - just because it was more lucky this time. :)

I remember my first time playing DOOM too...haha jk. Amazing as always. When I watch people who are really good at DOOM do speedruns/challenge runs, I find myself trying to figure out why they are so incredible. The concept of DOOM is really very primitive at its core. Run, shoot, exit. But the movement, finesse, precision, awareness that these runs take is just insanity. I would think that anyone that doesn't know DOOM or has only played it on a casual difficulty would look at this and think that it looks like a jumbled mess of chaos where the player is running around like a chicken with his head cut off. I feel like in order for one to understand and truly appreciate what has gone into completing these runs, one must attempt these difficulties themselves. I challenge anyone who has only played DOOM casually to attempt to finish a level on nightmare. Now most people with any decent skill could probably finish the first map with some practice, but as soon as you get into map 2, your world comes crashing down and you realize how insane this truly is.
The speedrun does not end with the destruction of the Icon of Sin. A second or so can still be saved, if Doom Guy kills himself in the moment of triumph. Now, that is harsh!
Last time I made the joke. "But can you do it faster?" Well, Hell you did. Kudos to you Sir.

Imagine you’re just hanging out with your pals, talking about how you’re going to get a shot off on the doom guy, and then, bam, out of nowhere, a green blur, see it shoot a rocket at a wall and poof its gone flying off your view.
And before you get a grip you’re in a pile of corpses and looking at your dead pals all around you and bam you hear a BFG go off and right as the green blur reappears you cease to exist.

Your recent doom 1 speed run where you went through the wall at the end.. I've played this game on shareware when it first came out and I feel so dumb when I watch your videos thank you so much for the overwhelming display of pure talent
Dude, this community effort, yes, some of the strategies are invented by ZM himself, but most of it are improvements invented by other speedrunners.
You should see the incredible custom wads the community is still making to this day and the absolute monstrous players and speedrunners that were forged from those!
I 100% recommend you check out ZM's Sunder runs. In particular map 18 and map 20! If doom 1 and 2 is all you've seen then you're in for a pretty mindblowing ride :D
In E1M8 when Zero shoots at the Pinkies and runs through the wall he is trying to get enough Pinkies to line up with enough barrels while shooting to cause the game to track too many hit-able targets when firing the pistol, once the game has too many targets to track in a single shot the player's wall collision disappears so he's able to clip through and run straight to the death room at the end of the level. Hope that helps clear the trick up a little for you!
@@arpy4428 o I already knew that and if you look at his older videos he even explains it in the description but he did it in a different area. He used to kill all the pinkies and he would do it in the very next room on the wall on the left. I believe the last stage on the first episode has a problem with the walls because they have to have a special room in the back. You can instantly clip through the wall in the back room that automatically kills you.
But I might be wrong on the walls too because he used to cut through the walls on stage 24 the chasm in doom two also it's just the stage that he cuts through you can't cut back into it so he has to hit the exit button through the wall.
@@joshuasharrock466 Ah you're talking about his previous WR video when he runs into the wall between the lanterns. In that instance the geometry of the wall is thin enough and oriented in such a way that if the player is moving at max speed at the wall and "hits" the correct place that the calculation for the player's collision box completely jumps over the line for the wall so it's like the game never registers a wall is there in the first place. Fun fact, that wall skip is the only way to beat that level on when playing NoMo (No monsters).
I believe the map 24 trick you are referring to is a classic void glide, you can use an enemy to bump your hitbox outside of a wall or gain enough momentum to skip the collision calculation like the E1M8 trick and get pushed OOB (out of bounds), but because the player's hitbox is still working correctly and making calculations the player will be stuck OOB. When OOB you can only interact with switches if you are able to be perfectly perpendicular to them and no other walls are in the way.
If you're interested in how the DOOM engine actually makes it's calculations you should check out "decino" here on CZcams, they have tons of great videos breaking down the DOOM engine logic.
EDIT: My bad, I was thinking of another speedrunner "depr4vity" and their wall skip, in Zero's old DOOM 1 runs he uses a Pinky to void glide iirc.
