Rolls-Royce Holdings (the jet engine manufacturer) and Rolls-Royce Motor Cars are completely different companies these days, in fact there have been four large companies called Rolls Royce, with a history going back over 100 years.
The Original Rolls-Royce Ltd. was responsible for the iconic cars and aero engines such as the Phantom and Merlin, but went into receivership and was bought by the British government in 1971. It was then split into two companies; Rolls-Royce Holdings would continue to produce engines for aircraft and other large vehicles (including nuclear reactors for Royal Navy submarines!) and Rolls-Royce Motors, which was technically a brand new company, that would take over the automotive arm of the now defunct Rolls-Royce Ltd. Fun fact, Rolls-Royce Motors also owned Bentley at this time!
Rolls-Royce Holdings continues to make jet engines and other high tech equipment to this day, but Rolls-Royce Motors was sold to VW in 1998 and absorbed. This company became what is now Bentley Motors. The Rolls-Royce brand of luxury cars we see today (called Rolls-Royce Motor Cars) was formed in 1998 and sold to BMW, who own it still.
Rolls-Royce Ltd, (the original) 1904-1987, split into:
Rolls-Royce Holdings (the jet engine company) 1971-today, and
Rolls-Royce Motors (the car company) 1973-1998, which itself was split into:
Rolls-Royce Motor Cars (the new car company) 1998-today and Bentley Motors.
Hope this goes some way to explain the funky business model you alluded to, and that you'll forgive a massive tangent!
