A few might have been employees' pets (I think it started out that way), but by and large, it was actually a stroke of promotional genius on the part of Mr. Jim Gabbert, owner of TV 20. Calls were sometimes put out over the air with days and times to come to San Francisco and have your dog (usually) recorded for a TV 20 ID. TV 20 viewers from all over the Bay Area and as far south as Gilroy would make the pilgrimage to have their dog immortalized on a KTZO or KOFY-TV Station Identification. From a promotional standpoint, imagine having hundreds (at least) of viewers who were now glued to TV 20 in hopes of seeing their dog. But they called all their friends and family telling them about maybe seeing Fido or Rover on TV 20. Then the question arose: "How can *I* get MY dog on TV?" Rinse, repeat...a true promotional coup for TV 20...viewership grew exponentially. And it didn't cost Jim Gabbert a dime.
Living in the Bay Area for all my life, this brings back memories with the TV pets on the ID spots.
