  • We recently put some of Arden Station’s fire safety systems to the test with the help of Australia’s national science agency, ‪@csiro‬.
The team used a fog machine to generate ‘hot smoke’ with controlled flames, to safely simulate how smoke behaves in the station. We monitored smoke movement, speed, extraction time and impact on emergency access points.
These tests aim to ensure Arden Station’s ventilation systems are working as expected to help keep people safe in the rare event of a fire.
Similar tests will be carried across Parkville, State Library, Town Hall and Anzac stations in coming months, ensuring the safety and preparedness of the stations when the Metro Tunnel opens in 2025.
    About the Metro Tunnel Project
The Metro Tunnel will create a new end-to-end rail line from Sunbury in the west to Cranbourne/Pakenham in the south east, with bigger and more modern trains, and 5 new stations. With testing now underway, the Metro Tunnel will open in 2025.

It's cool to get some behind the scenes on this stuff

Integrated systems vital during emergency situations esp. station evacuations, TVS are key to ensure the smoke or fumes are extracted, all these integrated with FACP and BMS are key for any metro. Good job guys

People were not wearing respirators while the place was full of smoke, shouldn't they have been? They said it's synthetic oil, but wouldn't you still be breathing in particulates?

Good point but the object of this testing is to keep it real, the affects it has on humans... It would smell quiet strong, I assume resembling the oil in the carriage mechanical parts....and how the smoke dissipates with the aid of smoke ventilation systems and how it travels up to the open, raised roof design allowing people to see clearer and inhale less smoke as they egress the trains, platforms and station....
