Great vlog . A coupla hints , we carry a thermos bottle of hot water when stringing new lines/ or repairing lines , dip the tubing ends in the hot water to soften them , they go on the fittings easier . Run your main as close to the cooking area as possible , less carrying sap . Make your tap lines from main line to tap longer for future tapping . Tap on South side of the trees , they get more sun/heat and will run more sap . Luv Ya 🍁🍁

Good luck with the sugar maple season. I worked a couple years on maplefarm. Do yourself a favor, next time you drive by a maplefarm, stop by and have a quick look on how they run lines. You will learn a lot in less than a minute!
Good stuff guys, just put some taps in today myself. A few tips for next year. Pick yourself up some mainline wire, run it first and then wire tie the tubing to it. That way it stays tight and doesn’t sag when sap is in it. Also, the three way tee part you are putting in the tree is actually for holding the spout in the off season. You don’t want to put two holes on the same vein as you will lose most out the lower hole and have twice as much non conductive wood in the future. When sap is running good you should get ballpark a litre of syrup every day with what you have. Cheers

This video makes me even more excited for syrup season. Tubing looks like a fun way to collect sap and watch it run through the lines. I've only ever tapped trees with buckets.
Just finished putting in 500 taps at my friends operation in Upper Michigan. The sap is flowing good this week. One suggestion I'd have is to wrap your tubing around your anchor tree at the top of the slope. They sell end clips to loop it around the tree. It makes a good solid line that way. Have fun. It's a great hobby to be involved with in my retirement.

It’s neat to see the process of harvesting to what we see on the table. I live in Western Canada where this isn’t “an every day” thing here. Maple trees are not as plentiful here. When does the snow actually melt there? April, May? I have never been to Ontario during winter/early spring. I live in Chinook country. This time of year ( early spring) for us - one day we have snow, the next a Chinook blows in, melts all the snow . The fallowing day we have motorcycles and sidewalk chalk out .🤷🏻♀️Ontario is absolutely beautiful!!
Thanks a lot, I remember being in the Chilcotens and experiencing that. There was a lot of snow and a warm wind and it all melted it and blew it away and the temps came right up. It was pretty cool. Here in what they call Ontario’s near north, we get snow a bit the semiconductors week of November and it stays into April. We sometimes get a snowfall in April but it’ll only last a day or two on the ground. That’s around when all the lakes break up too, usually not to long after Easter.
@@JimBairdAdventurer You may have gotten more snow than us. Some of the trees we tapped are already showing ground at the base. Also the sap is running pretty slowly.
Learning how to get maple syrup from a tree using a cistern method. You haven't quite got to my favorite part yet. You know the part, home made pancakes, buttered, on our plates with maple syrup drizzled over top. Oh my goodness.

Then when I get to my Son-in- Law, I'll say, look what Jim & Ted caught. He loves fishing. He just reaches in & picked that "1" up out of the river. He was standing there, wading. How lucky can you get. I would love some pancakes with maple syrup.
You know this system is in use in all kinds of large scale operations that tap hundreds of trees and more so, I dint think you’ve pin pointed some major flaw. The deer will just walk around or under.
I just started getting flowage from the maples 🍁. I'm along the 45⁰ N Parallel in Minnesota. Also, will you have a numbering system drawn out, so you know where to put the tubing next year and tubing won't be wasted? I suppose that the 🌳 trees will grow and get the measurements off a bit. I only ask because you are cutting the tube to adhere to your specific length.

Maple syrup is awesome. We do it here in Virginia believe it or not, very mountainous here so our temps are up and down. Also, walnut syrup is great.

Jim how long does the season run for tapping trees? I am in Sudbury and I want to tap a couple birches.
Depends on the year but the sap runs when the temp is above freezing in the day but still drops below freezing at night.

We collect sap and then boils it down into syrup and we don’t sell it so, ya.

Wont the liquid (syrup) freeze at night time at least? Maybe it doesnt matter ?
It does, if you toss the ice floating in the tip, your boil down time will be a lot less and the part that freezer has no sugar content
