I couldn't speak English well when my parents decided to move to Canada. But just like this lady, my brother and I were forced to work in English only since the area in Canada where we grew up in had no non-English speaking families. Just like you I also cried few days because even Math and Science classes became pain in the neck. In fact, when I wrote my Grade 9 diploma exam (just like Grade 5 exams to Sri Lankans), the graduating picture had only one non-English speaking immigrant student; that was me. Today, I am well-off and working/living in Canada just like any other person. I do have an accent when I speak English but I know the English better than Sinhala. Exposure to English at a young age matters and hopefully every child get that chance in Sri Lanka with inspirational teachers across the country.
