Poilievre calls for answers as newly-released report forecasts carbon tax economic impact on Canada

  • Debate on the price of pollution boiled over Thursday as Conservative Party of Canada Leader Pierre Poilievre stated that the "carbon tax cover-up has now been exposed," during question period in the House of Commons.
"The economic vandalism and carbon tax cover-up of this government has now been exposed," Poilievre alleged, saying that the Liberal government had "leaked out" the real figures and "the economic hit Canada will take - originally reported at $20 billion - with inflation it's $30 billion a year or almost $2,000 for every single family in Canada."
Poilievre's comments were in reference to the release of a report created for the Parliamentary Budget Office (PBO) forecasting the economic impact of the industrial carbon tax on Canada, as well as other pertinent forecasted figures such as the total percentage of emissions saved.
Environment Minister of Canada Steven Guilbeault shot back saying "the Conservative Party of Canada are entitled to their opinion, not their own sets of facts Mr. Speaker. The facts are clear - eight out of 10 families get more money back from carbon pricing than it costs them.”

This government is sick.I am 69 years old and worked as a slave in a factory for 45 years. When I had to quit in 2016 because my knees couldn't take it anymore they gave me $6000 dollars in severance. The government took $2000 from me in taxes. I do not want to call myself a victim but I was a chump in believing that anyone in power cared about me.I got a job at a golf course which is a lot easier than slugging it out in the factory but I still have to work 42 hours a week just to make ends meet. That's the crux of it. These people are so upset about the environment that they shut down the oilsands in favor of giving countries with very little human rights massive swathes of money for oil that caused even more damage to the environment than the oilsands.
So much of this climate hysteria simply results in hamstringing Western businesses, which are then replaced on the global level by mostly Chinese businesses, who accomplish the same job but polluting five times more.
My stance often has people claim that I'm a climate denier, but the reality is that I can recognize that compared to China, anything we do just doesn't matter. They pollute at such a scale that it's hard to even fathom it. We can destroy our peoples way of life, tax them into oblivion, and it will have 0.01% impact compared to what China does. It's not worth the price. We're not saving anything. In fact I think we're actually doing more harm to the environment by giving these businesses to China. We're putting it out of sight so we don't have to see it in our own backyards.

Poilievre has weaponized and dehumanized our most vulnerable in society who need critical health care. He has done it to sow fear and to bring back the failed policies of the war-on-drugs era. He points at the Fentanyl death increase of 166% in 9 years under Trudeau, but ignores the 200% increase in 2 years while he was in cabinet under Harper. The Public Health Agency of Canada began national surveillance of opiod-related deaths in 2016, under Trudeau. Harper's top criminal justice advisor supported tough-on-crime initiatives during the Harper/Poilievre era, but changed his mind after moving to Vancouver and said “I thought supervised consumption sites enabled drug use, and that giving people who were addicted a safe supply of free drugs was an insane policy. I deeply regret that I let my political ideology take the place of evidence.” During the first 3 years of BC's safe supply consumptions sites, BC opiod deaths increased by 36%. But during the same time in Alberta, with its Poilievre-approved tough-on-crime policies, opiod deaths increased by 55%, more than double the Canadian average of 25%. During BC's one year decriminalization pilot program, opiod deaths increased by 7%, and during the same time Alberta's opiod deaths increased by 24%. Even more deadly than Fentanyl is Poilievre's policy towards it. Fentanyl is an easy to make synthetic opiod, 30 times more potent than heroin, 100 times more potent than morph

Economists agree that a price on carbon pollution is the cheapest way to reduce emissions with the least amount of harm to the economy. "Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault says the Conservatives' attack on the federal carbon tax and its associated rebates is based on a "false premise" pulled from a "flawed" Parliamentary Budget Office (PBO) study.
On Wednesday - after the PBO acknowledged it had made a error in its economic analysis of carbon pricing and promised to correct the record - Guilbeault called on the Conservatives to abandon their line of attack.
"To their credit, they (the PBO) made a mistake and they recognized it," Guilbeault said, adding that he hopes the "Conservative Party will also recognize" that their "entire campaign" against the tax is based on unreliable information.

When last in gov, PP and his Conservative colleagues had the worst economic & jobs creation performance of any CDN gov since WW2. They inherited a $12+ billion surplus and turned it into a deficit in less than 2 yrs (before the recession hit.) They failed to deliver on affordability - 800,000 affordable homes were lost - the price of housing went up 60%.
PP has voted 3X against building affordable housing - voted 2X against braising minimum wages - and voted against dental care for kids from low income families - when he's had taxpayer funded dental care for 20 yrs.
When PP was housing minister he built ZERO new apartments, ZERO new housing co-op's, and built only SIX affordable housing units in all of Canada. He cut 97% off the federal affordable housing fund, and as a result, the Canadian private sector built fewer new homes than any year under Trudeau.

We're still going to consume about the same, we're just going to have it be more expensive for necessary non-elastic goods.
All these carbon programs do is move what little manufacturing is left in Canada to places with cheaper labor and most likely less environmentally friendly production. For example, Canada used to be one of the top car parts manufacturers in the world but right now the vast majority of production lines still left in Canada are operating at a loss or close to one and once their leases run their course, they'll be trying to move away to at least Mexico, if not across the ocean to China or elsewhere.

He voted against gay marriage even though his own dad is gay. I mean, is that what you call noble? The impact it will have is a ℱart in a tornado compared to countries like;
    China 35%
    US 12%
    India 8%
    Russia 7.5%
Totalling: 62.5% of the world's greem house gas emissions
Every other country after that is less than 2% of the problem for a total of 37.5% of greenhouse gasses, by no means a small percentage but when you consider that is the cumulative GHG production of 191 countries! Out of 195. Canada's role in GHG is insignificant at best, negligible at worst

    Carbon Tax simplified
    Canada has 2 families:
Family 1: They consume a lot of gas for 2 huge cars, heating for a huge house, exuberant groceries.
    They paid $6 in CT
Family 2: They have one car, average house.
    They paid $4 in CT.
So, the total CT collected is $10
Divided by 2 families = Rebate of $5 for each family
So, at the end of the year:
    Family 1 lost $1
    Family 2 gained $1
If they cancel that program, you will net less money at the end of the year, and who wants that?
Only the rich want that, because they pay more than what they get in rebate.
