  • Learning how to study effectively can not only help you to save a bunch of time and learn more but it can also help you to achieve higher grades. In this video I share some of the things I learnt during my time as a student that helped me to optimise the time I spent studying and ultimately positioned me to excel academically. Enjoy :)

      I’m currently a junior in university for civil! Enjoy the road to it, there are many rewarding careers within civil engineering so try a few and keep an open mind. Most important enjoy being a kid now, and have fun making mistakes with engineering BEFORE you get to university (if you go that route). I wish much positivity towards you and your bright future!

    awesome Video! Honestly half of the battle is figuring out which equation to use~ lol. Couple of things I might say, Repetition and working though problems after one semester become too much of a hassel in retentition. Spacing out (Skipping a day between) studing helps a lot in retention. As well as taking notes CONSEPTUALLY will be always better than Linear notes. I use Obisidian to help me link consepts in depth to have a really strong foundation of how to apply things. Maybe have a look at Obisidian as a way to take notes!

    • @BEngHielscher
      @BEngHielscher  Před rokem +2

      Thank you! I agree with you, spacing out your study and repeating things over time helps a lot in retention. And thanks for bringing up the point that there is other and potentially more beneficial ways to take notes and study concepts. Obsidian sounds like a really interesting app and I will definitely have to check it out. Thanks for the suggestion! :)

My big issue is that in my secondary school and Alevels I could study last minute and get the highest grades, the workload in my specific engineering degree is way too much to do that, sadly I got stuck in that mindset I’m trying to unlearn that and start to review my notes from the beginning of the semester.

How did you find studying with one note. I found printing off my notes was great but I believe it’s extremely hard to print off notes on one note

    Thanks man. Im in my 2nd year rn and i want to improve my study habit. Do you make any notes or do you just add extra information in the lecture slides? The lecture slides sometimes can be really long so i usually make my own notes where i compressed everything from the lecture slides all into a couple of pages. But it does takes a long time to do plus sometimes i dont even understand what im writing down. So it takes more time for me to revise it. And over the semester, it does kinda feel like im unnecessary putting too much time doing this. But i do prefer if all the notes are compressed. Can i have your thoughts on this?

    • @BEngHielscher
      @BEngHielscher  Před rokem +3

      During class I would add extra notes next to the lecture slides. When studying I wouldn’t try and compress everything set of lecture slides but what I would do is try and make an overall summary for a topic. Here I would just try and compress the most important things to one page. Formulas, definitions, diagrams, graphs etc. Besides this I’ve also found that doing things like making my own formula sheets and flow charts on how to solve complex problems really helps. I think trying to compress every set of lecture slides into your own words probably isn’t sustainable throughout the semester so don’t feel like you have to do that. It’s better to spend that time trying to understand the lecture slides then just rewriting it :)

      @@BEngHielscher what are your thoughts about making a summary for things at the end of each week? maybe one page each of important content you've learnt for a certain unit that week, and then towards the exam period, you've got a good reference. i think i'm going to try this along with annotating lecture slides, i'm in the same boat as nite; notes took so bloody long and i didn't get much out of them

    *Going over material Repeatedly and Consistently is v important
    - Review Lecture Notes
    --> Collect important formulas and add to a general self-made formula sheet
    Revision doesn't begin before exams..you do it from week 1.
    Emphasis on Tutorial Questions (Stuff teachers go over)
    1) Capture - capture, record everything from board. If possible, include teacher's verbal tips as they do it.
    2) Comprehension - really understand the question process, go back and try to do without looking at solution.
    3) Consolidate - rewrite question answer in really detailed steps, add additional supplementary relevant info (graphs, steps, etc.)
    Do big assignments early/start early to prevent a potential overloaded/burnout week. Look ahead for project filled or exam filled weeks.
    Organize your notes
    - keep it all in one place
    - similar structure
    - why? self-explanatory easier to reference and actually use.
    - his system was going down vertically for notes, and horizontally across adding questions of same type on One Note. You can also name pages in one-note.
    If you don't understand a concept, jump around, and look for external resources that may make more sense (articles, yt, etc.)
    - dig around
    - be willing to put urself out there
    - office hours, contact professor if you need to, see if you can set up a call, in-person office hours, etc.
    - see if a friend can explain it to you.
    Long run, important to keep in mind that knowledge builds upon each other, so building strong foundations is very important.
