The irony of this whole thing is that the All Star Game trophy was named after Kobe Bryant, who always gave us his best effort whenever he was on the court

For sure, SAS really cooked with that one. And yeah the players can sponsor a dunker to keep the All Stars involved. It ensures that there is effort, and you end up giving prize money to people that it would likely mean something to.

A G-League player winning back to back Slam Dunk titles is absolutely ridiculous. This is the same competition that everybody used to love. We saw the most extraordinary feats of athleticism on display from the likes of Air Jordan, Dr J, The Human Highlight Reel, Vinsanity, Superman, Blake, Air Gordon, LaVine, Iggy, Green. The dunks used to leave you speechless. Now they barely have any recognizable stars any more, never mind any originality or flair.
to be fair there is only so many dunks you can come up with. The dunk contest has been going on for decades.

I just feel like an NBA Dunk Champion, never mind a back to back one should actually play in the NBA and not the G League. Would he have won it if he went up against the likes of Gordon, LaVine, Ja, Ant, Zion, Giannis, Spida, Lebron, Miles, to name a few?
Obviously there is a huge problem in that the very best dunkers don’t have any desire to participate in what was once a prestigious event. Just think of those famous images of Dr J, Jordan’s iconic free throw line dunk, VC doing a 360 windmill or both LaVine and Gordon’s performances in 2016.

These guys used to go hard all season long and were competitive in the ASG when the league was very physical. They weren’t using injuries as an excuse to not try and seems like they got hurt less than now.

I actually like that idea about the slam dunk contest. It would definitely put the All-Star game back on the map
I like it too but I would change it to having the dunkers be from the area around the host city. This way we never see the same participants over and over again. Maybe just have the winner from the year before to defend his previous win.
SAS is spot on about Bron. I’ve said this for a long time. These players look up to Bron and when they saw he didn’t care for it, they followed suit.
Lebron doesnt care about being role model to other players, hes only care about chasing Jordan and winning more rings.

To be fair, Zach Lavine and Aaron Gordon were not household names when they did the dunk contest. They were young players with potential but were only role players on bad teams. They weren't All Stars. The Dunk contest put them on the map. The main problem is that people aren't as creative and most of the dunks have been seen already or done better in the past
Those two were definitely known for dunking, 1000%, and they had the highlight reels in game to prove it. If you didn't know who they were, you were a part time fan.

Instead of the current format, do like Kobe said: make it a pick-up game. Here's my format: voters select 20 players. The top 4 are captains. They take turns picking from the pool. Now you've got 4 teams, 2 separate games. 1 round elimination, down to 2 teams. Both games are just 2 14-min halves. PURE STREET BALL: NO REFS, NO FREE THROWS. NO COACHES. ONLY 2 TIME OUTS PR HALF. Just hoopin.

Yeah it's crazy to me to think it's either play hard and risk injury, or play like how they have the last 2 years. There's a VERY large gap between those 2 levels of effort that they can hit, that puts on a decent show and doesn't make a mockery of the sport, but also very much minimizes injury risk.
I have watched so many All Star games ('95 til now) where the players were going hard and I can only remember once or twice where somebody got hurt. And it was like a sprained ankle, nothing major. They just use that as an excuse because there ain't a better one.

It's a state of mind. The old days was for the love of the game. The new days are for the love of the money. Went from playing every game like it's your last, to reserve all your game for playoff mode. Went from loyalty to the team, to loyalty to the payday. The passion goes once the money comes into the equation.
Great idea
all team sports contracts should be incentivised and everyone has a base contract based on tiers. The base salary would still be significant but where the real money would be would be the incentives. Winning, assists. Points, rebounds, everything. This would make all pro team sports more competitive and the consumers would feel like they are getting their moneys worth.

Couldn't agree more pertaining to the dunk contest. Cats like Tyler Currie, Jordan Kilganon, Isaiah Rivera and Jordan Southerland would absolutely kill it!!! Hopefully Jaylen Brown participating will compel other stars to step up next year. I would love to see Ja vs Zion vs Antman vs Spida / Jonathan Kuminga. Those are some young high flyers right there!!!

Create incentive prizes for the players in order to generate actual engagement from them on these games & the overall weekend. Money talks & the NBA has no shortage of it. Make everyone play for a check, I bet you they'll compete.
