      I moved to Utah 2 years ago from California (Sacramento), and I was born and raised in Brooklyn,NY and lived in Texas and Florida...
      And Utah is one of the nicest strangest places I have ever lived.
      These are the things I've noticed about Utah:
      - Everyone is nice, but its like everyone is nice and keeping a secert.
      - Most people's names (male and female) has something to do with the wilderness, farming, or raising animals(cattle).
      - I'm a black male.....I can feel the stares from people in Utah... especially when me and my white wife walks into anywhere.
      - When I say "bye" to someone, they will ALWAYS...at ALL TIMES say "see yaaa!". I have never ever heard anyone say that on goodbyes in any other state. Usually other states say "have a good day/night", "Bye-bye", "Drive safe", or anything else.
      The "See yaaaa!" is driving me crazy!😱
      Think that's about it...for now....

    haha! Yeah, I hate to break it to you, but in my company we have clients from all over the country, and some of their names! Wow. One of our operators commented on the unique spelling of one child's name, and the mother very casually said, "Oh, you like that? That's how the nurse spelled it when the baby was born. I can't read." It's been very interesting.
    Some of the names are interesting not in their spelling, but in how many clients we have with the same name, like Precious, Queen or Princess.
    I think the Utah names are great. 8-)

      Hey - here's something I've heard recently:
      "The need for new and different given names [in Utah] resulted from the practice of plural marriage. Since the progeny tended to share a common surname, it became necessary to invent ever more original first names. Otherwise, life in the provinces assumed a depressingly monotonous flavor-witness the case of Jens Jensen, born and buried in Jensen, Utah."

      +Akinyele O. That being said, how can you begin to make that assumption? I'm not saying that African Americans haven't struggled due to prejudice, but how can you assume to have personally had it worse than everyone else in society just because they don't have black skin? What's more, why is it so hurtful to you that others might face similar stigmas even if the consequences aren't as severe? If anything, I would expect someone like you to be understanding and sympathetic to others who face discrimination, not offended that anyone would mention them because your people have generally had it worse.

    • @benmac2112
      @benmac2112 Před 8 lety +2

      ***** You completely missed the point of my comment. In fact, you do realize that you made the EXACT SAME point my comment made right? If you were to have actually read my comment carefully, you would realize that I wasn't saying that this kind of racism doesn't exist or isn't a serious problem. What I was taking issue with was how silly it was to take offense at the idea that someone from a different group might have faced similar discrimination. In the society we live in, it is considered insensitive (if not outright racist) for a white person to comment on racism especially if they are suggesting that it was not as bad as it has been made out. I just find it hypocritical for these same people to then turn around and belittle/take offense at the suffering of another group just because they assume that its "not as bad as we have it".

    I will say that Mormon names are different. But i'm pretty sure there are weird names everywhere. In NZ we have names you wouldn't hear anywhere else like Tama, Tane, Aroha, Ataahua. Just like in Asia how Muhammad is common and in latin america Julio and Sergio. It's a place thing I think. Utah is a Mormon state so it inherently becomes a Mormon thing.

    • @abbiehartley8551
      @abbiehartley8551 Před 10 lety +1

      Are most of the names in NZ that you listed common to the Mauri though? Here in Utah it seems to be a matter of pride to try and take common names like Chastity or Abigail and spell them uniquely. Plus you're talking about a state that named one of it's towns Tooele.

    • @PhoenixSunsNZ
      @PhoenixSunsNZ Před 8 lety +1

      Yes those names are mostly for the Maori. A lot of it is about taking pride in the name also. And some people do spell the names weird on purpose to sound fancy. Don't get what's wrong with Tooele, maybe it's an American thing. "Accident, Coupon, Chicken, Cut & Shoot, Experiment and Fertile" are all names of cities in USA.

    As a writer living just between SLC and Rexburg, I can testify to the creative spellings. It’s because of this that if I sign a book even for someone with a name that sounds as simple as Grace, I will always ask for the spelling. I cannot rule out the possibility of an I, Y, S, H, apostrophe, or the third letter capitalized. Or if it’s a name as distinctive as Phoebe, I can’t assume the parents didn’t put Feebie on the birth certificate.
    All jokes aside, it’s generally a good, culturally sensitive policy to not assume the spelling of someone’s name.

    • @WorshipUltragod
      @WorshipUltragod Před 9 lety +2

      Unnecessarily covered shoulders, t-shirts under dresses, shirts over dresses...Mormon women seem to have trouble dressing themselves. They should take a cue from Mormon men and just dress like normal people of their gender, rather than letting religious pressure dictate their fashion choices.

      @glarstout1 Před 9 lety +2

      Apostasy
      Travel a bit and see how in other countries and cultures, religions people are not allowed to enter into a church with bare shoulders. This is not a new idea in religion. go to Italy, Spain, Greece, just travel and learn so you understand more about other religions and you will see the Mormon religion is not "strange" but in keeping with many religions' ideas. "Also, explain to me why women should be responsible for men's lust in any way, shape, or form." If I walk down the street naked and men are lusting after me and I walk down the street modestly dressed and no one is lusting after me, that will explain to you how women are responsible for men's lust. Because men are about the visual first. they get excited about what they see. Women are excited about what they hear, this is why they need to go by actions not by what they hear because men will say what they need to say to get approval from a women to do anything. Men get approval to do anything depending on what the woman wears. If she wears close to nothing it means, "I am here for you baby," If she covers up she it means to a man, "Nope, I am not for play." She wants a commitment. And she is smart to do that. Make sense?

      fruitofthejoot Well, in Belgium there was a couple, in there 30's.. There surname was "pot" (same meaning in English) and they named their daughter "bloem" this is a perfectly fine dutch name, however, bloem means "flower"..... Needless to say, the government flat out told them you cannot call your child flower pot, what do you want? Get her bullied to death?
