* NEW VIDEOS EVERY OTHER TUESDAY! *
California’s brown pelicans are one of two pelican species (once considered the same) that plunge from the air to hunt. The rest, like the white pelican, bob for fish at the water’s surface.
The shape of its bill is essential to the birds' survival in these dives, reducing “hydrodynamic drag” - buckling forces, caused by the change from air to water - to almost zero. It’s something like the difference between slapping the water with your palm and chopping it, karate-style.
And while all birds have light, air-filled bones, pelican skeletons take it to an extreme. As they dive, they inflate special air sacs around their neck and belly, cushioning their impact and allowing them to float.
Even their celebrated pouches play a role. An old limerick quips, “A remarkable bird is a pelican / Its beak can hold more than its belly can…” That beak is more than just a fishing net. It’s also a parachute that pops open underwater, helping to slow the bird down.
Behind the pelican’s remarkable resilience (and beaks) lies 30 million years of evolutionary stasis, meaning they haven’t changed much over time.
--- What do pelicans eat?
Pelicans eat small fish like anchovies, sardines, and smelt.
--- How long to pelicans live?
Pelicans live 15-25 years in the wild.
--- How big are pelicans?
Brown pelicans are small for pelicans, but still big for birds, with a 6-8 foot wingspan. Their average weight is 3.5 kg.

Greetings! I'm Elliott, the producer of this episode. Thanks for watching. Please let us know what you think! We read everything :)
Deep Look awesome video elliott!! ❤️😎👍🏽
Deep Look: I learned more in 3 minutes than in an hour long TV documentary.
Von Neely true
I think that your videos are amazingly detailed and are of a great quality. It's shocking to see how much work you put into your videos, and would like to congratulate you on a booming channel. I also have an idea for a video; Taking a deep look on creatures of the past.
Goodbye!
Deep Look amazing!

These are some of the highest quality informative videos I have seen. They always provide just the right amount of information without getting dull. Thanks for such high quality content!
Gracias.

Deep Look You know Japanese as well?
Omg... That's spanish.
wellmywifemakessmoothies ilike I hope you're joking.
Gular Pouch?
You mean its Wobbly Gobbly right?
And they called them 'scrotal throat'

What i always thought it was its wiggly jiggly thingy
When I was a child I thought it was called wiggly thing
I like to call it the cranial scoop
For real tho, props to your music crew! I noticed the little musical flourish when the pelican wiggled it's tail and was totally charmed!
So glad you caught that! Seth is a terrific composer.
For anyone else like me who's reading the comments and is now looking for the tail waggle... 2:09
@@sassasdfghjkl thx alot
Good job Seth!!
Seth is a legend
I really like the closeups of the pelican. It really emphasizes just how unique they are and gives us a personal look at an otherwise hard to see bird (at least here in the desert where I live lol)
This pelican with its face tucked in towards its neck looks exactly like my dog giving people the sad puppy look... literally the cutest thing I've ever seen, bless this video
A small favour- could you include metric values in brackets in the subtitles? I mean it's not a big deal for us to check how much is 3 gallons or 40 feet, but would be nice to have it here :P Big thanks from Europe :)
yes!! that would be very nice since i don't know how much exactly is a feet to a meter and all without calculating >
or a big thanks from almost the rest of the world
hamad bakheet YES
I was just about to write that! It would be great!
Kamil Siwiński agree. This can't be a science channel with imperial system.
I am in awe at how you make amazing videos like this, Deep Look. Plus, I learn more.
Thank you, Pie!
Deep Look Metric System please
These are awesome, i enjoy Dr. Ann Jones too, just seen her first vids. Someone we wil seel in the future a lot too, hopefully!
Lets say natural selection snapped millions of necks before we got this version of the pelican
fc hoi lol 👌
Why we don't see it in nature today?
@@a.s8897 because they die
They mentioned that the fossil is identical to the living ones, no evolution, nothing has changed
@@abdurrahim3283 thats impossible lol you cant define that by only relying to a really bad fossil and evolution is a long process it doesnt happen on 10 years
WOW this video was so well done, and it must have taken a really long time, good job guys, this was fascinating
Thanks, Fuad.
Let me say this again, documentary producer deserve wayyyyy more recognition and praise for these informative and quality infos.

Ahh, I remember when I was photographing a garter snake at pretty much the same place, a pelican dived for something, and we got it in the photo. Those were good times
Wow it feels nostalgic to see this old videos again after 4 years
Deep Look I Love you And will always support this channel
Love from India🇮🇳♥️
God i love pelicans! I fish all the time in the bay/ocean and i always love watching them!
I just came out of school and already I'm learning again
Thx for this video. I love to watch pelicans here at Galveston. They are great soaring birds flying thermals & ridge lift fm. the bldgs along the shore, seldom flapping their wings. I used to fly ridge lift when I was in a glider club yrs. ago, so I admire their mastery of the art of soaring & gliding. Excellent video.
I just started watching today, and your channel is one of the best out there. Deeply informative and precise. Uncovering the natures excellent masterpieces.
Never seen pelicans dive, but they sure are a sight to see here in the Bay Area. It's surprising how large they are, and seeing them fly in small flocks is so cool!
I always play Deep Look videos on full screen with high res, just so I am sure I'm getting the best experience. Love it!
Excellent!

Yep. Try jumping from a high dive and landing on your belly. You will understand.

There are always these little things in your videos ....just very photogenic animals!
'bout to sleep but deeplook notified and here I am watching :)
Pelicans are adorable
the cinematography on this video is amazing. I don't know how Deep Look manages to keep up such amazing quality, video after video, without ever getting dull. One of the best channels on CZcams, if you ask me.
Do you guys intend on expanding your content? Don't get me wrong, your show is the best show on CZcams, but I'd love to watch you guys talk about something like maybe the human body, or climate change or even space stuff. Whatever it is, I'll still love your content.
Mohd Adlan Very good idea, hopefully they do because the video quality is top notch, might as go as far as to say that this deserves a spot on TV
here I thought that they were gonna interview a pelican 💀
Man, that seamless edit at 1:30
This is the only channel who could lay out a very complex intricate information almost about anything in a very simple understandable way! Very short clips but very detailed! 👌
AS USUAL, AMAZING, EVERYTHING u post IS AMAZING
Talented, brilliant, incredible, amazing, show stopping, spectacular, never the same, totally unique, completely not ever been done before, unafraid to reference or not reference...
*Who is getting recommended to this in 2019*
So much information in such a short video! Love it!
I never realized how much I love pelicans. thanks for the video.
Pelicans have beaks
Yes
Wow thanks captain obvious
Amazing
You should do a video on box jellyfish and/or scallops having eyes!
Wonderful ideas - we appreciate it!
@First Last: I wish modern humans had never evolved. The Earth would be in a much better place had we stayed on the African Savannah.
Isn't it extraordinary, that not only do these highly contextually sensitive adaptions occur at all, but that the relevant BEHAVIOUR in the creature also arises. Blows my mind a little. Like you mention about the young ones learning, but somewhere in the past, there had to be a period of simply knowing.
This is amazing! In-depth camera action too👍
Then why can’t my Pelliper learn HM Dive?
3:03 epic fail 😂😂
This channel deserves so much more recognition that what it has! I already have shared a couple of videos on facebook and have told my younger cousins and nephews, nieces about this channel!! They are so fascinated with it!! Keep making these videos! More power!
Brent, thank you for the kind words. We love making the show!
The only thing i dislike about this channel is the shortness of these clips
Good episode, as always :)
But, please, could you make this fan of yours happier by at least showing the metric values on the screen?
Im sorry but the thumb nail of the pelican looks terrifying 😂
Pelicans are such sassy-looking birds.
I love love love pelicans! 😊😊😊 so wonderful to finally see their faces up close. I see them often and always think they look very like their dinosaur ancestors, more than other birds...
They look so much like pterosaurs.
franhound you mean pterodactyls? orr?
Pterodactyls and pteranodons are both pterosaurs.
Wow, you're really on a pter.
Deep Look Isn't it pteriffic?
Tia pterodactyl doesn't exist
Sobhan Allah 🌷
Subahanallah indeed
فعلا سبحان الله ..يلا قومي اطبخي وبلا كلام كثير
love their pelican-do attitudes too.
I love your show! I learn new things everyday thanks to you guys! Keep up the good work!
I probably could do that too but I just can't seem to *wing* it
Pelicans ate cool.
Nice video.
your sound editing is always so great. thanks for another sweet vid!
Awesome inside look at what I'm sure we've all wondered about from a distance. That gular pouch is dope.
It is Baja! I thought that brown pelican looked familiar. He looks beautiful in this video.
Wow - that's true! How did you know?
I volunteered at Wildcare for a year and a half, so I saw Baja every week. (Plus I checked the credits to be sure.)

I really love the 4k quality, keep up the great work.
The amazing video images of these animals is amazing. And the capture of how they hunt and live, none above besides maybe BBC is so well done. Love you guys and please make more

Very informative video, great photography, very pleasing voice.

I always love watching these videos! They teach me things I would have never known. Just subscribed :-)
Beautiful !!
Thanks for sharing !
Dats called impact tolerance at philosophical level, one more gut of countless guts of genius pelicans.
I have been binged watching every vid from deep look hahaha every video composition is just sooo good especially the voice over and the music
Wonderful film. This really is an excellent channel.
Being British, (Scottish) I was lucky enough to watch a lifetime of David Attenborough programmes so the bar sits pretty high for me, but Deep Look really delivers.
A pelican is a bird I'd love to see, but this will have to do for now.
The shots and the cinematic views are the best
For some reason, I am seeing Intelligent Design in all of this. That is what I call amazing!
i love ur videos man they just so informative
This is by far my favorite episode. Kudos
Thank you!
I love this series so much. Thank you.
You are most welcome.
I was under the impression that their videos are click baits like most channels on CZcams, but I'm so glad I checked these videos out, absolutely love them! you guys are awesome!
Thanks Preetham! No clickbait here (mostly!)
This is very informative, thank you for this
*Beautiful bird ♡♡*
They are basically as same as during dinosaur age. Which means that they are very good at surviving asteroids :-)
The beak of the pelicans could be a good shape for aircraft and trains too.
How do you take those underwater shots? It's amazing to see a pelican dive straight towards the camera! I love your videos.
I’ll never forget the day I saw a brown pelican on top of a bathroom while I was at summer camp in elementary school. It flew away majestically.
Amazing edit! Especially with the eye zoom in.
YOUR VIDEOS ALWAYS AMAZE ME!!!
I once saw a pelican walking like nothing is going on and suddenly ate a pigeon like it was nothing
What a fabulous video! I find pelicans so fascinating. After watching this I'm even more amazed by them.
Thanks, Patricia.
I recognize this awesome voice! Congrats on the new and awesome channel and I love PBS! You guys please keep up all the awesome content you are now making
Deep Look is the one of the best CZcams channel. I develop my English skill while I learn too much things about world. Many Thnx :)
I live in Los Cabos, Baja California Sur, in México, but I'm from Tennessee, when we went to the beach we saw all these pelicans diving to hunt fish, one was so close to me he splashed water on me! It was an awesome experience, one that I would never forget
Wow, very informative! Love the music too!
Excellent video with sharp closeups. Just enough information to satisfy my curiosity. At 1:30, I like the way it transitions smoothly from the real bill to the bone.
I love these!
Your channel is amazing and the narrator too! ❤️
Every single topic of this channel is 💯 Knowledge full and with beautiful voice. 👌🏻
