ABOUT THE EPISODE
"I'm going to dangle my feet over the wire", croons Kimbra on the opening line of Wandering Limbs. It's a position in which she seems perfectly comfortable, walking the wire she's stretched between jazz influences and an eccentrically dark take on pop song-writing. "If you like Nina Simone, Florence & The Machine, and/or Bjork, then we think you will enjoy Kimbra - her music reminds us of all those fierce ladies!" wrote Perez Hilton after seeing the video for her single "Settle Down".
Stripped of the pop production so heavy in her released tracks, we were excited to hear Kimbra exposed only to the acoustic echoes of the lane we'd chosen. With dueling vocalist and keys player Sam Lawrence in tow, we met up with stylishly attired Kimbra in an alley behind the Workers Club in Fitzroy.
The lovely folks at the Workers opened up their laneway entrance to supply power to Sam's keyboard. Posed between the pub and the parked cars, the two delighted us with possibly one of our favourite sessions to date, a fortunate combination of an elegantly executed song with environmental blessings such as perfectly timed gusts of wind. We were even lucky to have a coy father-of-the-crew who unwittingly arranged himself centre shot, supplying a new meaning to the song's recurring line, "am I caught in the background or part of the scene?"

Anyone is still listening in 2024?
Yes!
It's all about the harmony and the memories...
Yup
First time actually listening to this.
@@ewutermohlen same!
this video also has me coming back for over a decade. hits different.
Why not a century ?😮
Me tooo
Same
Same.
Same here ❤
2024 and I still consider this one of the most beautiful musical masterpieces of my time. Therapeutic. Climatic. Stunning in every way.
2020 anyone?
Edit: Love that everyone keeps adding the years as the come and go 🥲
YES GUUURL
Stay still 2021 guys!!
This comment made me have to good what year it was 😶
Yes even in 2021 always n forever and ever
Honey at least once a month....this is literally my most watched video on all of CZcams lol
Such a heartbreaking, beautiful composition - all from a 17 year-old soul. (She was 17 when she wrote this song.)
you sound so gay!
Yeah its heartbreaking so perfect, genius....
@@sulichkuba me listening to this in 2023 after first hearing it in 2011, still feeling incredibly moved by it
@@peachyhanna1 yeah its sth magical with this performance so touching ive listening so mamy songs and music is improtant to me but this is undecribeable feeling ;)
This is honestly the best live performance of a song I've ever heard, the album version is great but this one is just a masterpiece
this still gives me chills 10 years later MY GOD !!!!! I watched this video so many times It was my go to my senior year of HS . *cries*
Same lmao freshman through senior year
This is my 9-month-olds favorite performance. Doesn't matter how upset she is, if I play this she's all smiles, it's a lifesaver lol.
Annie Doiron That’s lovely to hear. After all these years it’s nice to see this video still touches people. I’m sure Kimbra would be proud too.
One of the most beautiful duets I've heard in a long time...
Same.
It really is! I am in love with this album still after all these years and its songs just popped back up in my head over the last couple of days.
Keep coming back to this video for years now! Always loved seeing Kimbra perform. So much passion and talent.
JoelKnl 2019
Right 2020
still on 2021, both of them were it great
Me too....wish there was more from Sam, he's great
1:57 with the wInd blowing through her hair.. PERFECT
Yeah i've noticed it
The rare occasion we get to see her forehead. 😅
I'm gonna dangle my feet over the wire
Despite your despair, I'm going over to the other side
There's a break in the clouds where the crimson connects
Anticipate my demise, the world's different from up here
Am I caught in the background, a part of the scene?
Misery in the come down, when I come down from here.
Are we tangled in each other, or placed in between?
Like a stone, or a stones throw away from falling
Am I just scant in the landscape,
Or a range close to you?
I think I fell into a strange play with wandering limbs
And eager hands
Now the sun's gone today, I can lest towards space
Now transcend into blues, fade out from the ground breaks
I feel so beautiful, cut me off from the crowd
I got the birds eye view, now we're all just thoughts in a sky
Am I caught in the background, a part of the scene?
Misery in the calm-down, when I come down from here.
Are we tangled in each other, or placed in between?
Like a stone, or a stones throw away from far
Am I just scant in the last day
Or a range close to you?
I think I fell, I think I fell into a strange play with wandering limbs
And eager hands
Wow the guy's voice is hauntingly beautiful.
Crazy this was 8 years ago. I remember exactly where I was in my life when I first saw this. Time flies...
Just seen the Milksteak episode yesterday lol.
By far one of the most beautiful things she’s ever done.
Haha I love how at the end she asked the crew that post-coitus question, "So, was that good for you?"
When they looked at each other, it looked like they were communicating through harmonies.
They def were. True artists speaking that music language to each other in a way those 2 could understand. Just beautiful.
Came here to check out Kimbra and was a little stunned by how sublime Sam Lawrence's voice is. Great duet!!!
ADDICTED TO THIS SONG
Exactly I watch maybe 30 times.
I love the fact tgat she is too shy to look at the cameras *-*, totally love this song and I totally love the way that they connect with their voices...
When the video begin and she is introducing she doesn't look at the cameras, at the end she barely look at them again, and I have seen lot's of videos live, and she has the same problem, let her be she's just too cute
Idiots look at a camera. It is irrelevant.
I think she may be on the autism spectrum.
Kimbra is a true artist
I love how they play off of each others runs towards the end. Their voices together create a magic that's both eccentric and beautiful.
Kimbra, please make a live album. PLEASE!
2022 ….I remember listening to this wen I was 17 ..still just as amazing
How are their voices so well recorded?! It's really something else.
Kimbra is genuinely talented in music.
I mean her voice and productions are both extraordinary.
This live version is simply PERFECT i gotta say
I'm speechless.
Music does amazing things to us.
agreed
Should have been asleep 2 hours ago for a job interview tomorrow, "Just one Kimbra live vid from my recommended" I said 2 hours ago....I regret nothing!!!
Hey I'm back....I still regret nothing hahaha
Did you get the job?? Edit: ermm I just realized the original comment was two years old lmao
@@PNW_Chemist yeah I have no clue, that was like 4 jobs ago lmfaooo!!
@@amandafeliciano542 loool good shit
Back....always back.
That little moment they have at the end, when she almost can't quite believe how good that was... that, is the essence of amazing music. It's like this sudden jerk back to 'reality' from a deep musical reverie where they just blend together in a very true sense. Mesmerising. One of my favourite live vids on CZcams.
Much better than album version!! Great!
I can't find the song on her albums, is it named something differently on one of them?
Vows - Australian Tour Edition...
So true, a much better version than on the album
yes it is, magic!!!😑
Back again in 2024. Love this video so much.
It's funny how popular she became because of Somebody That I Used to Know. It's so much unlike most of her original music, and I'm so glad people love her anyways.
which is ironic because I actually do not care for that song too much. but I love Call me or Cameo Lover
+onomstarr "Love in high places" is a pretty nice joint also...
+Greg Elliott I actually really love her voice, her look, and her expressiveness in that video..really really dig it. She's just beautiful and captivating in it. But then, yes. It led to me all this other music and to discover how totally over the top talented and beautiful she is. And it is all sooo much different, and just incredible. So..thanks 'Somebody That I Used to Know'. It has shown me a true musical gem.
Wait........WHAT? SHE WAS THAT GIRL ON STIUTN???? ;-;
Her beauty, it cannot be contained.
Holy fucking fuck this is amazing. Chills down my spine throughout the whole performance.
4:01 Incredibly Buckley-esque.
this song, her look, the scenery this whole video has this vintage feel to it. i love it.
2021 and I’m still in love with this
The thing that really makes this song so different and captivating from some other versions of it is the truthfulness that they captured, a quality that you simply can not fake. You can feel it in her voice, hear the emotion in the lyrics, and practically see the great welling of soulful energy that compounds and rebounds off each musician as they swirl up and around each other in a transcendent connection of pain, and loss, and ecstasy. The bashful look on Kimbra's face at the end says it all, as she comes-to from the songs trance and remembers that there are cameras and other people around. It resonates so strongly because it's a incredibly intimate moment in time that they were lucky enough to witness and share with the rest of us.
true!
Well said
I always get great comfort out of listening to this particular recording. It just takes me to a comfortable state of mind. I love that!
Me too. It's like visiting a special secret place
It comforts all 3 of my kids as well, they stop crying immediately it's amazing
Sam Lawrence needs to come out with an album so I can keep it forever in my heart 😭
i don't care if she has the same haircut as Lord Farquaad from Shrek- Kimbra is hotter than a habanero.
+honouryourvomit Now I can't unsee it!
honouryourvomit I was thinking more along the lines of Anne Frank... she's just beautiful!
why'd you have to put it that way HAHAHAHA
This made me laugh so much, thank you omg
i eat habaneros with all my meals
2:32 I kept replying that note over and over again. so beautiful and flawless!!
Me too.The harmony is beautiful.
I saw this comment before I heard the whole thing, so when that part came up, I got chills. :)
Goosebumps every time I watch this.
ive contributed to about 450 of the views on this video :D lol im obsessed with this song
Ms Black :-) so true.....
Her voice is morphine in my veins .. and I rather feel pain so I can heal and hear her once again. .
Ms Black GIRL SAME LOLL
After 9 years i commented that.... i dont change my mind this is so great, so artistic so emotional, so expressive, so beautiful, i love it so much...
Still such a shame to me that this and Withdraw weren't on the US version of the album. Both such beautiful songs. I've watched this video so many times in the last 10 years
Same
Kimbra is the rarest of flowers, never to be seen, yet we hear her in the slight distance . A reason to keep going on. Thanks you K.
There are so few of her caliber left in the world of artists
Over ten years old and still rocks hard
I would like to know how the vocals were miked.
No visible mikes and absolutely no wind noise on a visibly windy day.
A very lovely performance throughout.
I do live sound and studio engineering for a living and I'm sitting here thinking the same thing. Lmao
"What kind of sorcery is this?"
@@clicheguevara5282 I wonder if they had a mike behind the wall positioned out of the wind.
There is a mike at 4:30 by the guy in the yellow jacket wind blocked by the wall.
WHY IS SHE SO FUCKING BEAUTIFUL?
i do not know but i love...
I am just glad some chicks are still sexy, they did not all go SJW and turn into hate machines...
Over five years later and this is still one of my favorite live performances I've watched (not live). The music and the singing is beautiful, but the setting, the breeze blowing, the non-produced quality of the sound, it's just perfect.
We need more of these two together
it's been 5 years already, it's about time they release an album together or something like that, for god's sake...
YES!!!!
@@jamesgrant6360 yes!!!
I still come back to this masterpiece in 2022 💚
Dude sitting on top the old flat back just chilling and soaking it up 2:38
+hellovanite I wish I was him right now! Just to be there and witness these two live.
He's "caught in the background"...
I am fan of Florence Welch but I knew KIMBRA yesterday and I can´t stop from hearing her. she is really the best. and she has a very unique stlye and great personality, I am amazed.
Still amazing 7 years after my discovery of this. Really awesome!
GERntleMAN it keeps getting better. So beautiful.
After all of these years, i cant wipe the grin on my face while listening to this.
always come back to this, its one of my fav from her as a casual listener lol
Years later, I still come back to this. A masterpiece.
Still listening to this gem in 2023, and still getting choked up at that tremendous performance.
Musical perfection with substance. Rarity these days.
Steve Lee I agree. I have noticed from a lot of Kimbra's music that I find this quality; the melodies and harmonies and overall song is beautiful to listen to, but the song also has gorgeous, meaningful lyrics.
This is my favorite live performance ever.
She is so amazingly beautiful! She literally hurts my heart to look at her!
12 year old me had many “wanderinglimbs” usernames because of this song. it’s still such a sweet, stunning song 💖
7 years later and it feels like the first time I watched this. Wow. Kimbra has inspired me sooo much over the years... her talent and passion is out of this world.. 😩👑♥️ Grateful to have known her music.
man someone show me how to sing in a perfect mix like this sam lawrence guy does. such a free but connected sound...released but powerful.
She and her music are beautiful.
Real music still exists. Thank you Kimbra.
Still incredible 10 years later
One of my favourite duets on CZcams.
How am I just now hearing of her. This is amazing stuff! Her voice is amazing and the way she puts feeling behind her music!! Nice!
Because Wandering Limbs is on the original Australian/NZ version of Vows not the US & Europe later version.. so many wonderful versions.. This live performance video was one of the reasons I fell in love with Kimbra.. I since also fell in love with the recorded version of Wandering Limbs.. It is superbly different with raw & clunky interesting sounds as well as these emotions.. Some people say they are disappointed by the recorded song compared to this live one, though..
Just watched twice in a row today and for like 50 times overall
I love you Kimbra but I need to see some more Sam Lawrence in my life too.
This song is so beautiful it brings tears to my eyes. It's almost spiritually uplifting.
I’ve been coming back to this video for probably a decade now when I want to just drift away. These two are so in sync with each other; it’s beautiful to watch and more beautiful to hear. 🤩
she has just a perfect voice
God they sound so gorgeous together! This is my favorite Kimbra performance - the lyrics for this song is just brilliant. One who composes their emotions and plays their own instruments is a true musician.
Love the connection they had there while improvising, so good.
Love when they sing back and forth
Saw Sam Lawrence at communion on Sunday night, he was good, they played this performance on the big screen just before he came on! Really great song performed by too great artists and musicians
I like her style.I find my self keep coming back to this song luv the way she sings lips hands and body let you no she feeling what she sings
Omg I want to settle down with her.
czcams.com/video/8X_Ot0k4XJc/video.html
I guessed this was the ostrich laughing from Family Guy and it was. Perfect.
Still gives me the feels in 2021 ✨💚
Kimbra is a beautiful soul
Sam's vocals remind me of old As Tall As Lions! so good. I wish Kimbra would write more songs like this
talent runs in her veins i love withdraw, she deserves more credit
Never gets old.every few years utube suggests this particular versión of kimbras song and i got watch it again.
Kimbra couldn't be any more beautiful. She is a tsunami of creativity and inspiration. i cannot get over her...she is just perfect
Sometimes simple videos are the best. She's very talented and seems true to herself.
This gave me CHILLS!!!
This is why i love Sideshow Alley because of stuff like this...changed my life
Ever gotten goose bumps that hurt?
This is just beautiful, to no extent.
This is a master piece. In composition, performance, harmony, and aesthetic. I will always be back to listen some more!
Beautiful, awesome, wonderful and amazing
Most amazing thing about this is that there's all that wind in her hair... but none in the recording. Nice work peeps.
Love her voice.
I started watching this when it was at 1.7 million views. It should definitely be at least 1.8 million views by now.
I started watching this when it had about 400k (7 years ago). It makes me a little sad that ariana can get this many views in a couple hours :/
2021 and its only 1.9million
This is so beautiful, I'm speechless. It makes me so angry that they didn't get a round of applause straight away, and it wasn't longer, they deserved it.
Her voice is so powerful
Both Kimbra and Sam sing with a lot of "soul". I've been listening to this song for over a year now without ever knowing who Sam Lawrence was. I just knew that whenever I did see a video featuring both of them that Sam would have a much darker shade. What a surprise! :) It's great these days how styles and cultures have mixed and shared. Beautiful.
Great musical chemistry! Beautiful
