Great review on Blood at the Root! I found you through Dezmond Zee channel. The audio is definitely better than reading the book in my opinion. I thought the same that it could have been shorter. I agree with the “woke” and “blackness” but I pushed through and finished it. I wanted to love it but didn’t unfortunately. I see how it can relate to Harry Potter but I prefer Harry Potter. 🤷🏽♀️
To add: when I read fantasy, I’m reading because I want to escape my adult issues and the world. All of the pop/black culture references kept taking me out of the story.

I definitely will stop listening to an audio book if the narrator's voice is unbearable. You're not alone. Sometimes I wish we could select the voice we want to hear for these books. I see AI helping us with that in the future. 😄
I really wish we could choose that would be cool. I have a couple people who I know for sure I’d listen to but a lot of them are very robotic and I can’t stand it 😂

Idk. I don’t mind the story, but I’m listening to the audiobook too and the narrator is getting on my nerves. He’s too dramatic through the whole thing. And he keeps doing this thing a lot of dramatic actors do where they pause and do a quick inhale in between words in the sentence-usually before the last word or last few words. You know what I mean?? And this dude does it a LOT. It’s very distracting for me. Lol! I actually wish I had gotten a physical copy instead because I kind of like the story, but dude is ruining for me with the excessive pauses.
You’re right about how he’s laying it on THICK with the “wokeness”. But I appreciate his effort. I get it. It is a bit much though.
