Stretching Samples FAR On The KO-II

- The Teenage Engineering EP-133 KO-II can Alias Samples! Sampling sounds high pitch and then stretching them back down extremely far to get them back to a normal or a low pitch creates aliasing within samples, which is this amazing texture that I was able to get from my older MPCs, and it's a technique that has been widely used for a very long time. So can we do it on the new Teenage Engineering EP - 133? YES! You could also do this on the PO-33 pocket operator! I also pair the new KO-ii with my Digitakt so I don't run into the voice stealing issues I had in this video - • I Tried to Make a Song...

The last 5 minutes of this video sums up the KO2 experience atm perfectly. Basically " This thing sounds great and im having a lot of fun ...wait... wtf just happened" rinse and repeat.
Hahahah.
Same here! Hope a fireware Update will fix that. Drives me nuts
That's my experience with all of the TE products : (
Lol
I was about to comment that you could combine pitch and tuning to really push a sample lower but then you figured it out. Great PO-33 implementation too I've been using a PS5 controller lol.
That's dope!
When’s the EP-133 vid dropping?
Wait. You’ve been using a what? How?
Great advice, Antonio.
@@articutmyselfGustav is always good for some good advice. 😅
TE: the only company recruiting beta testers by making them buy a half-baked unit under the guise of completion
yea....Akai would like a word with you
I feel like this is pretty representative of my KO II experience - it starts to win me over and then immediately breaks spectacularly
LOOOL😂
100% Mine arrived with the fader not working, I've requested a replacement, but I'm so close to switching to a refund instead. I really hope this can be resolved with firmware updates, but it feels like gambling lol
yea bro im about to return it
That’s insane that you were able to catch it breaking at the end
TE should watch this so they know people can't make this up.
it’s not uncommon so it’s not that insane
TE will probably need push another OS update pronto
I love how you're giving the new box a chance, despite the shortcomings you have uncovered so far. Annnnd then, it goes haywire at the end, haha.
What we learnt here today is that how versatile and useful the KO I (the O.G.) is... :)
So true! Haha. The gift that keeps on giving
Okay finally a video on the KO 2 that makes this seem like something to consider. Ricky T you’re amazing with creating a very stylish great sound groove
RICKY you are such a constant source of inspiration and fun; thanks for keeping it real
Brooo!!! You went DEEP here! Love the sounds you’re getting out of this little guy and that jam was 🔥 !!
I just lost one of my proyects today as well 💀, I feel you 🫶🏼 jajaja
Sick jam.
Love the performance effect on 14 min mark.
Cheers
Loving the 350bpm Amen at the end there!
Thank you for letting us into your creative process; very informative and entertaining.
I hope the project is saved somewhere safe!
I'm stoked on this one. I plan on using mine with a drum machine as both the brain and primary drums. I haven't seen many folks doing that, but I think it'll really add to the performability. Not to mention saving on some voices. Edit: bummer about the bug, but I'm glad you included it in the video. Keeping it balanced.
Super chill happy space low-key house groove as usual!
Broke my heart at the end 😥
Love the way you rocked that unfortunate ending. Hope this gets figured out mate
I have to say your lighting here is fuggin great
such an unexpected twist at the end there 😂 sorry for your loss, but thanks for keeping it real always
immaculate energy as always
Them keys from the nord remind me of a future sound of london track . Awesome dude . Cant wait to get my KO ii
Brilliant..Never disappoint.
Your the best man, inspiring and no bs in your vids i love it
Much love from England
I appreciate that!
Dude I was just thinking a video showing with a Digitakt or other groovebox would be dope. I like the EP-133 so far specifically for playing with samples and chopping, and was thinking something like the drums on my Digitakt in a combo would be way better - just haven't had a chance to try it out. Thanks for the video!
Holding down main + 1-9 on the number pad is how you load a project, at 16:32 Ricky is loading a different project while his current project is running, cant really blame the 133 for that.
Looks like you are having fun. I think thats the point of it all really. Also, you got it sounding great!
Yes it’s a blast to use and wild how quick it can be with its quirks
16:30 At first I thought that I might have made the wrong decision to cancel my EP133 order. Then from minute 16:30 I thought I did everything right.
lmaooo did the same thing
That lead sound is the intro of Uncried by Patrice. Sounds great with your house twist
I love that beat at the beginning of this video
Yea, you need to drop this one... I need this on my dance playlist
WAIT I JUST SEEN THE ENDING NOOOOOOO
I just hope he will rework it, and make an even cooler track from that! 😍
Hahahahah 😢
The bass and strings sound so good
The bass came out gnarly! I feel like it has some processing or a compressor on the main outs. It does some special magic to the sounds
Totally vibing what you made! Sucks about the pattern being wonky at the end, though! 👊
3 min in and already on a vibe, love you ricky
Thanks for tuning in! ❤
that last unexpected pattern - was so laughing to see your reaction man, when you were vibing on nice pattern and that fockin sound appeared) on the next)))
😁 just gotta keep moving.. onto the next groove haha
Teenage Engineering - KO-II Sample Weight $189
😂😂🤣
This SLAAAAPS! I love what you did with the strings and bass. Delicious! What I wouldn't have given for a device like this when I was a kid.
EDIT: Wait...what the heck happened at 16:32?? I hope you're able to figure that out and follow up. That was a heartbreaker.
That was a harsh ending. Wow. They seriously have to squash some bugs there…
Great tip with the aliasing ❤
Glad it was helpful!
@@RickyTinez played the vinyl at 78rpm to get longer than 20 seconds sample time then pitched it down. 🔥😮 smoking crackle on there
Vibes. You make me wanna make house music, surely some kinda black magic!
Hahahaha did you make the up and down left and right on the caption?! I cant describe what you did but i like it
1:10 I'm shocked the PO doesn't have a hold button like the SP404 has.
I think they will add that feature once they see people complaining
Damn that sounds good
I believe there's even a bit farther to go... As you demonstrated, Keys (with the pitch center at the lowest C), plus the Pitch (via fader) - but there's more! In the Sound menu one may lower the pitch of the sample there, too, and Timing with the fader stacks with the other offsets. It's crazy. I sampled a bit of speech with the mic and applied all of the above. Add some Delay master FX with a very short delay time + reasonable decay (flanging effect) and the results are scary. 🙀
Hey professor. Been playing along on my 'sampura' with all your vids. Having a blast learning to capitalize on strengths and overcome weaknesses. Sorry about your lost pattern 😕 I guess it happened to Blezz Beats too? Let's patiently collate information. Thanks for the video!
P.s. mine showed up with no samples, and I think maybe the speaker is a bit quiet? Hard to tell. 🤷♂️ otherwise no issues.
You got a plastic MPC 1000 that's even quirkier, more limited, but has alot of imagination in the display and overall organization. Meanwhile, I notice more MPC1K videos all the time....I'm getting ready to pull mine out again....I know one thing, it won't be harder to learn than this LOL Great Job, as ever, thank you!
haha yeah the disappearing project. been there. maybe a KOII PRO in the future?, we can hope
You make some cool tunes Ricky 👌
What an ending to a gear review, I don't recall seeing anything like that unless it was something vintage
Oh, so that's what that sound is, when I pitch samples down, and this ringmod kind of sound appears!
I just got an SP404 mk2, and I forgot to convert my samples to 16 bit, so all my lower frequency samples had this ringing sound to it. I did consider to just keep them as is, but I don't always want that sound for my kicks and basses 😅
Hey man! Just discovered your channel and I love it! I am relatively young but I run a soundboard for a band once a week, play around and make beats with 3 pocket operators, and Dj in my room mostly, but have small gigs a few times a month. So im into/interested in sound, tech, mixing, beats, producing etc. So what exactly are you doing here and were the intro? You make great stuff but im not quite sure what it is you do and were to get started/equipment breakdown of everything. If you could gimmie some info, that would be great!
Dude you make the best advertisements for products by accident sometimes.
Started with a great house track, ended with a great drum and bass track.
Great video bro, I'm having more fun with the KO2 than I thought. 🙏🏾✊🏾💚
Same! It’s quirky sure, buggy yep, but fun as hell gaha
Nice. 100% Swedish flavoured setup today.
Nice!
Oh My.. the end!! That is sad. Well at least it's recorded you could recreate it. Good stuff.
Yo Ricky, part of the problem with the voices choking each other is that you're only sampling in stereo. There's no need to sample a bass synth in stereo, and I'd be surprised if your Pro3 is actually outputting anything different on the right vs. the left with the patches shown in this video and the last. The Nord could be valuable to sample in stereo, but the Pro3 can stick to mono, man. Sample in mono = double the voices. It's a limitation and shouldn't necessarily get a pass, but I've been able to make real full sounding tracks by being careful with what sampling mode I'm using for what sounds. Sample in mono more, I think you'll find more utility in the KO-II.
hey Ricky - I discovered one of the problems you had at the end with the muted A GROUP... doing a video on it - but when you FADE TO MUTE MULTIPLE GROUPS... and then bring back one or more of those groups- the other groups can no longer be controlled individually with just the fader... you have to HOLD DOWN THE GROUP while fading to get it back to normal... seems to only happen when you do a multi-group fade-out mute...
I had an order for this but cancelled when I saw all the issues and still hadn’t shipped. Then I actually got lucky cause I found a local listing for a still sealed SP-404 mk2 for $350. Dude just had an extra he was trying to get rid of. Fastest grab of my life.
It prolly lost tempo info at the end. Something wrong with my KOlculator, just works 😂 Inspiring chillout, enjoyed!
This video just made me so excited for my KO II to come in... A true Masterclass!
Did you watch the video till the end?
@@31pas0 yes
@Ricky 16:31 I have similar issues with my stored projects. Scenes may also completely disappear although "commited". Just imagine you are on stage and then... K.O. II is really not what I expected. ☹
Oh whoa that’d be super scary!!
I'm hoping that the initial hype and the fact the EP-133 sold out so quickly made TE gamble a shitload of money on a massive second run, and now will be sweating bullets due to the QC issues, bugs etc, and they'll be super keen to get everything ironed out bugwise, and as many of the wishlist feedback items implemented so they're not say on a warehouse full of stock. We can but hope!
i think the ko2 as released seems half-baked with a lot of functionality that should be possible but wasn't implemented for whatever reason. hopefully the firmware will continue to be updated and we'll see what it can do when it's potential is realized.
Very cool vibe... as always! were you able to get your stuff back? Maybe with a power cycle?
Nope. Gone to the ether.. 😅
You should make the last bit a short... they need to see that happened to you. I love the workflow on this thing but damn it needs a firmware update atleast..
(Edit) I wonder if having midi sync in has an effect on the defect you experienced. Maybe TE just thought it would be used as a brain🤔 either way.. I'm going to test it whenever TE actually ships it my way
Beatmaker Says: "I want a very challenging way to make music."
K.O. II says...."Say less...I got you"
16:36 hell of a machine, even a autechre modus is included for 3oo bugs
Hey there, really cool video ; I love the Vibz your managing to put on with this little thing. Did you end up recovering the track that appears corrupted in the end ? Are you still using the device ? I'm wondering if it's worth it.
I think you sampled in stereo a lot, I would try to sample in mono more often to avoid voice stealing (esp. the bass and key notes)
Ah good call! I remember checking to see if the mono or stereo signal popped up after I sampled and I don’t recall seeing it. This time I DID see it was all stereo haha - would be awesome to change it after the fact but that probably takes some processing power that the ep-133 might not have to spare lol
Sounds like 2:05 just seem to write the track for you!! Man that's a smooth sample!!
I love the vibe of your videos, homeboy. Playing with the KOII for a minute, I realized that it's just a really fun toy. Then it dawned on me that TE is a toy company, and most people misunderstand this which causes all of the shock when the products don't live up to music production standards. I love my toys 😊
A toy company. So true 🙂
Yea that makes sense. Useable fun devices, but don’t expect the world from them or for them to fully replace a bigger machine
Thanks for the video, I can say I’m good without the KO and actually can start offloading some gear and get back to the MnM and MDUW workflow
😹...I got that tune!🤣..(that cpu! crash! is wild! asf!)😂
that at the end sum's up the EP-133 in a nutshell lol wtf !
Now to make a DnB track outta that glitch at the end 😂
That’s why I think if you had two EP-133s then you could put the drums on one and the samples on another.
what if you just use a po-33 for the drums? do they sync together?
@@LdotSdot210they do - they have a guide online for syncing either to a PO’s tempo or syncing POs to the KO’s tempo
Might as well get a real sampler at that point instead of this toy
@@mgyb8269 well some people aren’t inspired by the new MPCs because they remind me of a daw. I would use Ableton Live at that point. The idea is these are more portable. They are the size of an iPad but not an iPad.
@@mgyb8269 by the way….what’s a “real sampler” to you?
Can you make a video of Digitakt -> K.O. II -> SP-404?
At first I wrote that as a joke...but now I actually really want to see it 😅
shift+play start playing from the start, while trimming holding shift and pressing + or - will trim precisely - from the start or end depends on last knob tweaked, and my unit wouldn't start for like three tries - just lcd flashed and nothing. When it finally went on it was completely empty, no samples, no projects, nothing - had to restore factory etc. (it was before firmware update - maybe update solved it but now I'm scared wehenver I power it on)
I also have had issues with the sampler playing things at a very slow speed. Took me a few tries before it fixed itself. I think it might have to do with the triple a batteries, maybe if hooked up to usb power this wont happen?
“Wait, I may have to get one … and nope, still too buggy”
17:35 this happened to me. I lost one whole pattern and then some parts of another. Mine were pretty rough so not the end of the world, but it's pretty disconcerting that you can lose whole projects through seemingly no fault of your own. I still don't know what might have caused it
This thing needs resampling a week ago.
Seriously, it’d be nice to sample while playing too, also wish you could use the punch in fx on incoming audio
Damn after seeing what happened with yours at the end I might really just end up returning my unit
I am, faders broken, plus I didn’t get my stickers!
I'd dare to say the OG KO is way more useful for song writing than the KOII
2:05 the vibes do travel
Elektron called that man up and gave him some words abnot having a peice of their gear in his video.
Last part 😂
Are you recording from the synth direct into the sampler? Or is there an internal microphone on the unit? I know it’s a dumb question but I do like the idea of being able to just record simple sounds from an internal
Mic in the unit. Like that chompi thing.
I need one of these so bad
The weird bug at the end just makes me want it more ;-; reminds me of old gear
there is a legit ghost in the machine. i hope they add more ghosts with later updates.@@lukebussey5218
Loving your vids man. Do you think the SP404 mkll (I'm waiting on one currently) would allow me to stretch chords in a similar fashion?
For sure, the time stretching is pretty good and if you just let the sample get pitched down as well, you can go low as hell. Also, you can keep resampling to push things lower and higher and dial in the tuning. Super fun and very fast once you’ve practiced a little.
@@thomasweiler5319 Thanks. Exactly what I was hoping to hear :)
@@Jay.Ramone admittedly, I’m a massive SP404 evangelist. That being said, in every video I’ve seen about the KO-II, the SP can do literally everything better. There are some quirks for sure, and patience, practice, and using the manual and Reddit/youtube will be needed, but overall it’s just a more complete tool and instrument.
What would you like Teenage Engineering to improve and add to the KO II in future firmware updates?
if they add resampling its going to be a blast. without it the KO II is seriously limited.
16:30 I've had lots of strange and really random software problems with all of my TE devices: OP-1, OP-1f, TX-6 and PO-32 Tonic. It's all kinds of glitches: Some functions stop working, buttons stops working, the sound generators go off in weird ways etc. The way to fix it is to restart the device. It works. But it's still really bad for the prospects of live performance.. Like, what if I have to restart the synths in the middle of a set because of a software glitch? No thank you. Teenage Engineering, please get working on your software!!
What’s the transparent case you got on the PO33? Does anyone know?
Wow that didn’t just happen 😮
🙌
Could you explain your use of the digitakt here? I want to add some depth and am considering this combo with my ko ii
Loved your creation process and enjoyment. I'm pretty noob but I'll try to get used to it in Koala and then try the KO2 paired with a small midi board. Edit: last 5 minutes scary sh*t :))
