The FUJIFILM 18-55mm F2.8-F4 LM OIS - It's like 4 prime lenses in one! It's an incredible lens, and I show examples of it using video and stills to show the extreme quality of this lens.
I often prefer prime lenses, but this is like 4 prime lenses built within the shell of a zoom lens. Amazing! I use the Fujifilm X-T4 with this lens, to show how versitile it can be on this camera. The lens has 4 stops of IBIS, and the Fujifilm X-T4 has 6 1/12 stops, meaning combined this is a 10 1/2 stop combination of IBIS. - Krátké a kreslené filmy
I'm a ameteur fuji user from Turkey. Here new gagets are so expensive. So you make great videos for us. Thanks.
I bought one on Craig’s list for $300 almost 3 years ago. I couldn’t believe how good it was when I first used it.. I still have it and use it when I travel with my X-T2.
I've bought and used so many cameras over the years but when I decided to go with the Fuji X E2 that came with this lens I think I hit the jackpot. Bought as soon as it was available in early 2014 and I haven't bought another lens or body since ... and my Nikon DSLR and lenses are still in the bag. Shoulda sold em while they were worth something!
Mine's quite a veteran now, having bought it boxed with the X-E1 in 2013. The paint's flaking off but it works as well as ever. Great lens to take on holiday!
Thank you for the passionate recommendation. It would have been interesting though to see 1:1 comparisons with the according primes
Great video, thanks! Just bought the XT30ii as a second camera (main camera XT4) with the 18-55mm lens, which, as you suggest, ticks several boxes. Thanks again for your great content, which offers great real-world insights into Fujifilm technology.
Congratulations, I guess, since I did the same! )) Mark ii and 18-55. Not so many owners of X-T30 ii so far, from what I can see. But here in Sweden we've had it since November. I did add 50mm f2 though. Love both lenses!
The XC50-230 is also a great budget alternative to the XF55-200. In general, I believe there's no such thing as a bad Fuji lens
This is a only tele zoom
Agree with you 100%
Agree
Yup, I’m a big fan of XC 35mm on my xt30 ii! Looking at xc50-230 now haha
I never bougth a 23 or 18 mm prime lense because of the 18-55. It is so good, i can´t justify bying those. For 35 mm and 55 mm however i think the aperture is a little to slow, hence I own the viltrox 33/1.4 and the fuji 56/1.2. But frankly, if you are out for streetphotography and landscape with higher aperture is perfect, since it is so tiny. WR would be nice though.
Hi Chris, this lens is fantastic and yet they call it a kit lens! Get loads of great shots with mine and with ois it’s great for video etc. glad you are enjoying it!👍🇦🇺😎
I can’t agree with you more, that lens is a stellar lens, in fact almost all my top down shots on my channel apart from anything where u see my x-t3 appearing is shot with this lens 👍
First lens I got for my XS10, so versatile
A very nice video Chris, you give this lens the place it deserves !
Many thanks!
Great lens. I got mine with my XT-1 for about £250, I think (and the camera for £200) about a year and a half ago.
While healing with a messed up back, the 90mm 2.0 arrived. Like all of us, I tried shooting around the home. (my flat in S.F.) I have an African mask in the corner of the living room with a rough surface with a chalk white on it in some paint medium along with black details around the eyes. A million little cracks in it's rough surface. I set up the heavy tripod and shot 3/4 angles of it. I found I really needed to back way off to use high f stops like 7.1 to get just most of it in focus. I was around 10 feet away. Yesterday I had my 16-50 3.5MM OIS lens on my T-2 and tried some shots around 5.6 with no tripod. I got twice the depth of field, and there is no way you could tell which lens gave me more detail. The 16-50 center sharpness is amazing.
I love this lens. I was using a viltrox 23mm f1.4 but after getting this one i was shocked at how quiet the auto focus was and how sharp it was. It out performed the viltrox and now i can’t go back. I’ll see if i cash use both lenses
Hey, Chris! Would you say that you prefer this over the 16-80mm f4?
Can someone tell me why my aperture ring on the lens is not working? I have the small switch on the aperture sign, but I still can't set the aperture manually with the aperture ring... Please help
I love this lens. I wish the excellent 15-45 had the same build quality as this.
The 14mm prime, plus the range and capability of the 18-55 covers most things. Might add the 90f2.
would this lens be good enough to do Real estate videos with for detailed shots?
Chris, You have mentioned the love you have of old Fuji sensor cameras, creating a more film like/rustic look to the images. Would this lens allow you to maintain that analogue look or is it too clean on say a XE1/X-pro1. Cheers Julian
Hey, I think it'll be great for that analogue look, as ultimately it's the camera sensor which determines the final look. On the X-E1 it would produce some fantastic film like results.
I love this lens on my X-Pro1. It’s from the same time period, released in 2012. And the lens’ range works well with the X-Pro1 optical viewfinder.
I bought this lens with my X-T20 early last year (2020) and my experience and impressions have been the same as yours. I think it's a shame that it carries the label of being a "kit" lens, just because Fujifilm offers it bundled with many of their cameras. When I bought my (new) X-T20 I was considering three Fuji zoom lenses: the XC 16-50, the XF 18-55 and the XF 16-55. I chose the XF 18-55 for many of the reasons you discussed (size, weight, IQ and build quality). The fact that Fujifilm offered that lens in a kit with my camera (and at a discount price) was perfect. Couldn't be happier!
thanks for the comment - glad we share the same experiences with this lens. It's so good!
Will be getting this lens along with my new XT30ii today 👍 so looking forward to getting into the world of Fujifilm 😀
Hey Steven,
I als want to buy this kit. How is your experience so far - Are you satisfied??
So far the camera and lens have been an amazing experience! Still playing around with the film simulations and getting g used to it but can’t recommend this kit highly enough 👍
I have the ttartisan 35mm f1.4 and the fuji 35mm f2 wr, I was wondering if I should sell my fuji 35 or artisan 35? That way i can get the 18-55 zoom lens.
Than ks Chris interesting video. I bought the 18-55 2 years ago second hand a made in Japan model for AUD $350 it is fantastic. I keep looking at primes and their cost and remind myself that I dont need you. But I do buy old glass to use on XT! and X E1
I was skeptical about this lens before buying. That's why I had bought the new 16-80mm f4 instead but later I have sold it and bought this one. In 2nd hand market where I live, it's half of the price of 16-80mm. So this lens saved me lot of money and I'm so satisfied with its performance.
I have the 16-80mm and it is amazing. For travel photography I need those extra mm from 55 to 80. And I need weather resistance. If someone needs to buy one or the other (so it is not included as a kit), I would strongly recommend the 16-80mm f4.
@@TungstenOvergaard I agree with you it is a great lens too. But after using it I realized that I was rarely using the extra range. For travel photography, I am for 18-55mm due to its form factor. When I had 16-80mm for travels it felt me big so I was taking my prime lens with me but after having 18-55mm, I always get it with me for travels.📸
Btw you can check my channel for my detailed thoughts about 16-80mm. 😊
Cheers,
@@MehmetUgur I’m with you that is bigger/heavier. Sometimes nice results come with pain 😅 But just sometimes 🙃 Will check your channel!!!
Use the 18-55 on my XPRO1 and it works perfectly and produces gorgeous images. Use the 35 1.4 on my XT1 as bit slow on the Pro but like the balance I have now 👌
I have an X-Pro2 with the 35 f1.4 on it. I'm looking to add the 18-55 to my kit as an every day do almost everything lens. It certainly has a lot of good reviews. How do you find it on the front of the X-Pro1, does it feel balanced?
My copy of 18-55 is sharp from F5.6 upwards and realy verry good at F8, because of that, i prefer 16-50 which is very good from F3.5 ... on XE-3 it shines, and in addition it is much lighter and has wider focal lenght.
It’s certainly a little gem in the Fujinon lineup sadly mine gets little use since I purchased the XF18-135mm lens I even prefer this over my Red badge XF 16-55mm f2.8 which sits in my bag😟I’m just waiting for autumn to arrive and I’m planning on putting the XF18-55 on my XPro 1 or my XE 1 my XM1 will be keeping the the XC 16-50mm lens on it another lens that punches well above its price superb optics in a budget housing 😊
Excellent review and your right the RB XF 16-55mm f2.8 is heavy 😟
the 18-55 with the XPro 1 would be a wonderful combo - bring on the autumn!
I wish they had kit lenses like this back in the 70's when I started serious photography.
Great work with this channel. Keep doing it.
Thanks, will do!
I purchased an XT20 wit only 9 shutter count with this lens as a stock lens half the price the first owner just go along with the hype when this model came out shot plenty and kept it
I had this lens as my only to go lens on a trip in Patagonia. I took hundreds of pictures. There were only two instances I would have liked a longer zoom lens like the 50 - 140. This was when me met a couple of condors and in the Beagle Channel where we sailed into a herd of sea lions. nevertheles, I took wonderful pictures of both the condors and the sea lions (and cropping the picture gave me an excellent telephoto-like look. Highly recommended lens, probably the best kit lens in the world! (Though I hate the word kit lens all the same).
I have the 16-55 2.8, yes it’s heavy but I am a big boy so I deal with it. But, with that said, it seems that there is very little improvement in real world photography situations between the 2 other than the constant aperture and the edge to edge sharpness seems to be better in the 16-55 an minimum and maximum focal lengths. For your work, that lens it going to be one of your new favorites for sure. BTW - I asked before but didn’t see an answer, did you scrap the X-E4 idea all together or will that be a purchase down the road? Cheers, Rob
Hi rob, thanks for the comment. I'll revisit the X-E4 for sure, but am tempted by the X-T1 again as they've become so cheap.
Thanks 🙏🏼
I love my 18-55 as well.
I have owned it from the start of my photography journey. It is not comparable to even one of the primes in respect of sharpness but a good all over lens for getting decent shots, both at wide and zoom ends. If you're shooting video, you just can't go wrong with this one.
Yep, a great piece of glass. I would hope that Fuji will update this classic, perhaps with an aperture ring and weather sealing.
It does have an aperture ring
@@pierrelaviolette670 I meant a ring with the f-stops
@@cameraman655 they can’t put f stops on this lens as it’s a variable aperture lens. It wouldn’t work would it? If it was set at f2.8 and then you zoomed in, how would the aperture ring alter? That’s why it’s not marked with f stops
@@PRB_and_PLB_Photography Well, in 1984, I owned a Canon 35-70 3.5/5.6 variable aperture FD lens, with f-stops on the ring. But perhaps AF lenses vs MF designs of the 70s make this impossible.
Everytime I think about upgrading to the 16-55 F2.8 I remember that the 16-55 doesn't have stabilisation, which is far more valuable than the additional speed at the long end. I only have one body with VR, and that's the X-H1, the rest of my bodies do not have VR . Whilst I have a lot of primes for my Fujifilm system, this 18-55 is probably my most used lens. A much underrated gem.
I had both lenses, I was unimpressed with the XF16-55, it was far to large and heavy, and IMO less sharp than the 18-55. my 16-55 had bad CA too (could even see it in the viewfinder) maybe I had a bad copy but just not what I expected.
@@TonySmith-cd7jo I look at it as saving myself £1k, the only Fujifilm zoom in my bag, and I think it will stay that way.
@@baxtermarrison5361 Agree, I sold the 16-55 because the smaller kit lens is just better overall and fits the XT bodies so much better.
Not sharp until i turned off the OIS. And everything was awesome
The 15-45 lens is very good.
did you film the footage in 4k? looks so good mate
yeah, shoot in 4k and often upload in HD
50-140 is incredible. So sharp.
The videos are very good. What are your video settings on Fuji XT4?
thanks - video settings all change depending on what I'm shooting. for studio CZcams videos I just use 25fps
My results with this lens has been less than stellar. I Owned 2 used copies and both rendered smudgy images until f7.1 or so. I got rid of them and purchased a 16-80 which has much sharper images but is bulkier. I later purchased a 15-45, the images are great but I cannot stand that power zoom so I use it as a bounce around lens. All my other fuij lenses 27mm, 10-24, 56 1.2, 50-230 render nice crisp images. The 18-55 not so much. Lenses are used on an X-t20 and X-T3.
You’re like the only person whose mentioned bad image quality. All these good reviews and happy customers yet you had two of them and both rendered smudgy images? You sure it’s not your gear?
There are reported copy variations. But two bad copies is really bad luck. Mine delivers excellent results.
Hello, Do you know as far as image quality is concerned, if the 16-55 f/2.8 is better than this one on an X-S10? Thank you in advance!
I actually own the Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-F4 on my Nikon D5500 you can get this lens in both Nikon and Canon DSLR mount. I bought this lens for 148 UK pounds from MPB.
This is def the best kit lens compare to any other brands.
looking forward to your lens the legendary Fujifilm XF 35mm 1.4 soon?? ;)
yep - I have it here so will be making the review soon 😊
@@ChrisOrange thanks again for your kind reply, I'm really enjoy watching all your photography, landscape and seascape on this CZcams channel.
I hope that someday you can review also the Fujifilm XF 16mm 1.4 wide lens in the near future.
best regards and God bless you with all your family,
this 18-55 2.8-4 is a great lens , I have it , and also have the XC-16-50 , tested both , and the XC16-50 is the sharper lens...some more CZcamsrs have also came to that result . Just for info
mark I or II
@@kaykayes86 my XC16-50 has Sno 34A19917 made inChina , my XF18-55 has Sno 9BC57345 made in Philppines , don´t know which mark that is
You have said you are inundated with comments so I do understand if you are unable to reply😢
This month bought the X-T5 and used 16mm lens ... amazing image quality so have literally sold my Z7 II + z mount lenses. I really like the feel of the X-T5! I'm a landscape photographer and really like photo merger panoramic results. I also have the 55-200 Len's which is also great but need an intermediary Lens and wonder if this 18-55mm would be it. Im about to buy from WEX but this Len's has poor reviews. You do say you love this 18-55mm ... this is now July 2023 ~ do you still feel the same⁉️
Dunno the price you can have the Fujifilm lens on your side, but I suggest you take a look at the sigma 18-50 f2.8 as an alternative. Quite tiny , lightweight and great aperture for around 499 euros. Not stabilized though
Hi there, I think it’s a great lens, especially for the price. If you have lots of budget, then get something more expensive - but you may not notice any difference. I really like the lens.
It’s not a constant 2.8 though right?
nope - that's the only downside.
Should I trade in my 23mm F2 for the 18-55mm?
I own both too. I think the 23mm is a tick more dimensional, while also the 18-55mm is not flat and surprisingly good for a zoom. In certain low light situations the IS overcompensates the faster aperture. You can easily shoot sharp pictures at a 1/20 sec, if your subject doesnt move. Thats awesome.
You don't get 10.5 stops of stabilisation, you get 6.5 stops with the 18-55,you can't just add them together, it doesn't work like that! And 18mm is 27mm on FF not 24mm!! It is a good lens though and shouldn't be classed as a 'kit lens'
A “kit” lens is a lens that can be purchased as a single package with a camera body, normally with a discount over purchasing the two items separately …. It doesn’t represent the quality of the lens. While many kit lenses are poor, not all are ….
Jesus Christ cry about it to someone 😂
I can’t believe you have that many upvotes on such a nasty comment just let it go 😂
Thought the same, but didnt say it to not look like a wisenheimer ;)
I bet you're fun at parties...
Add my name to the 18-55 fan club. Video is brief and on point - well done.
Great lens. £340ish on UK Camera Store new!
18 mil is 28 mil equivalent not 24.
Great review btw. I always love your videos
Great at 18mm, very good at about 40mm and ok at 55mm.
16-55 is way sharper, especially at the long end.
Focused at infinity in the 45-55mm range, this is a poor lens. For other settings it is good. Ian Worth did a review of this and found it sharpest at f11, which is very unusual, as APSC lenses are normally sharpest from f5.6 to f8. I have had a number of excellent shots, but randomly I get a terrible shot (seems like even though confirming focus it focuses at minimum focus point) …. There seems to be significant copy variation for this lens ……… and no you don’t get 10.5 stops of stabilisation …. You get the higher of the two … plus maybe another 0.5-1 stop
I have one it is a great little Len …….!!! 👍👍👍
It’s a workhorse of a lens. Ian Worth did a video about how it’s perfect at f11
czcams.com/video/8RapaGybMBI/video.html
The near perfect lens. If it just had constant aperture of F2.8 and kept the small form factor, it would be probably the only lens many of us need for everyday purposes.
Agreed. But for the nature of kit lens (consider the price) F2.8-4 was the best among other kit
Having owned both, I wouldn’t say this is in the same league as the canon 24-70 f2.8. However, the 18-55 is a nice lens and a great size/weight/cost combination.
I ended up replacing my copy with the 16-80 to get a 24mm FF equivalent. I’ve found it’s sharper in the mid range and gives even better stabilisation, plus the marked constant aperture is nicer to use.
I wouldn’t say either of these lenses are a bag full of primes though. I’ve heard the 16-55 is closer but not owned that. For me, there is a clear step up comparing to other prime lenses I own in the same focal range. This is particularly true with the 18 1.4, 35 2, 50 2, and 561.2.
18mm is equivalent to 27mm, not 24mm.
16-80 is a lot better. I have 18-55 too
Fuji is the Japanese Leica.
Can you do a give away for this one 🤣🤣🤣
i wish 😊 i have another lens coming soon which i'll be giving away...watch this space 😊
@@ChrisOrange haha worth a try 🤩

Dude, F4 is equivalent to F6 on full frame. That is not a prime lens.
The title of this video doesn't make any sense at all. Either it's like 38 prime lenses in one, or it isn't like a prime lens at all. You can also describe every other zoom lens in the world in exactly the same way.
Lets be realistic...this is not the best lens...period
Phil hoyle. He never said this was the best lens at any point. Do try to listen before you post. Peace and love 💘
