  • We finally got Stone Ocean animated... But at what cost? Lets take a dive into Stone Ocean's anime adaptation and the involvement of Netflix to see how the series was mis handled over the course of its release and the negative effects it had on the season as a whole.
Stone Ocean is the 6th Part of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, written and illustrated by Hirohiko Araki. Stone Ocean was serialization in weekly Shonen Jump magazine from the years 2000-2003. Stone Ocean was adapted into an anime by studio David Production in December 2021 and distributed by Netflix.

Nah, the one that regretted anything was DavidPro for having to work with Netflix. If Netflix cared about killing anime with their shitty binge model, they would have done something about this long ago since this isn't even close to their first time.

I'm hoping it doesn't get spun like that, because from what I can tell the other seasons of Jojo's get consistent viewership as well as getting new viewers at a steady pace when new people discover the series and watch from the start, so with that in mind Stone Ocean is the outlier, and there's only 3 explanations they can fall back on: 1) the release schedule was fucked (the correct answer) 2) people don't want to watch a predominantly female Jojo part (super incorrect, but I can see someone using that as a scapegoat in a meeting) 3) stone ocean as a whole is weaker than the other parts (debatable, I personally like it, but I know a lot of fans rate it near the bottom of ranking lists even before the anime started)
knowing that it's warner brothers and netflix taking the heat for this, I'm going to bet they are picking option 3, it's the safest option that absolves them of responsibility , even though the schedule is the primary reason by a fucking mile

This is the most upsetting to me honestly, you get JoJo getting bigger and bigger each season to the point that the anime made pretty much a lot of people either change their tune or at least view part 5 in a much better light compared back then when the anime wasn't airing yet, part 6 had the perfect build up to it with manga readers being excited to see how they'd do part 6 after they did part 5 amazingly and for anime watchers they just finished a hype adaptation of part 5.
Now we get to the part where obviously it's the culmination of every past JoJo part, it's in a way THE end to JoJo at least in the sense of it's the end of the JoJos everyone's been watching/reading because obviously after that we go into new universes, by all accounts they already had the perfect amount of hype leading up to it and manga readers like myself were sooooo hyped to see the reaction to the last parts because holy shit when it was just in manga only it was a crazy moment, all of us got so hyped imagining the anime watchers reacting to Made In Heaven, Jotaro getting sliced, etc but...none of it happened even when it actually released sure there were some reactions but not something you'd expect from JoJo.
Part 5 anime alone had such moments that got amazing hype and traction from internet communities, Part 6's end should be THE moment for every JoJo watcher by then and it was...nothing. God, I am honestly so sad thinking about how nothing the reactions to part 6 was, it's not my favorite part but no one can deny that the final parts of Stone Ocean should've made everyone go crazy.

Yea its a shame, it just seems like the publishers didn't bother putting money towards it for some reason. Because when you look at parts of the anime individually, there is so much love and quality put in, but it's clear that the budget held everything back. For example, the anime has an AMAZING art style, probably my favourite of the whole jojo anime, but weird/rushed drawings makes some scenes and episodes look really bad and wonky. Also, Kamikaze Douga absolutely KILLED it with both openings they made, but they just clearly weren't commissioned to make one for the second batch, even though I'm sure they wanted to. And Yugo Kanno made an absolutely amazing soundtrack, with some of his best work ever in it, but lots of songs were just barely used in some episodes. But mainly its the timing. They just needed a lot more animators to make the anime have the quality of the 2nd two batches, without taking a year of waiting.

I don't know if any of you guys remember the rap song we were supposed to get from Karen Aoki and Daisuke Hasegawa (Great Days singers). This was 100% legit since Karen tweeted it herself in Jan 2022. I suspect that this was supposed to be the opening for batch 2 of Stone Ocean. The Ichigo opening was very clearly meant for batch 1, since scenes only ranged from Jolyne in the prison van to the frog rain. It seems very unlikely that the rap was something they'd just dump in the full soundtrack release without it ever being heard in the anime.
I think that something went wrong during the production of the rap song/animation for it and this might've caused the super long delay between batch 1 and 2. Because we only waited 3 months between batches 2 and 3 and even Fairouz Ai herself said "yeah we know this is quick but batch 3 is coming in December."

If you look at previous parts of the anime you would notice that they all have different and unique art styles compared to each other. 1 and 2 to 3 is very different, then part 4 comes along with a completely different take but still being super unique and doing cool stuff with their color scheme, and then part 5 switches things up again and it looks really good. But part 6 tho? It doesn't look bad at all and has some very well animated moments but the art style, that it what botters me. It is the first time a new JoJo part looks fairly familiar to the previous part, it being part 5, and it doesn't look as good because they played it really safe with the color usage, resulting in a very dull looking prison and mostly dull looking environments overall. I still remember how I started to know, Jojo's, it was almost 6 years ago, a little bit after the end of Diamond is Unbreakable. It was a Playthrough with 2 French CZcamsrs I know on Pokemon Platinum (Pokemon Bloody Platimun Randomized to be exact). They were really funny and I was really facinated by the "ZAWARDO" moment they used in the video. I searched this in CZcams and found some extracts of the Stardust Crusaders fight with Dio. I wasn't into Anime at this point (and considering all the things I saw, I can't really say that I'm THE anime guy) but Jojo's really fascinated me. I started to look for places to watch the Anime and ultimately, I watched the 4th Parts on Crunchyroll. This was one of the best experiences in my life, I became a huge fan of the series. Fascinated by this, I also knew it was a manga adaptation but as I was (and still is) not really attracted to Mangas, so reading the manga was not something I intended to do. But as I was fascinated by the series, I did my best and made researches on the Wikis. It's not really a good way to do that but it still allowed me to learn something more about the series. Then, I learned that Jojo's Part 5 : Golden Wind will get an anime adaptation and what's more, that there will be an anime premiere in France. I was really hyped at this time. When we talked about that, we still talked about Jojo's and their memes. But one years after, without any new for Stone Ocean, my friends started to watch Jojo and as we were all together for our studies, we were watching all the series together and sharing our reactions. Obviously, some things weren't as hyped as if we discovered them but it was still some good moments. As I didn't want to spoil them, I tried not to show them touchy memes nor talk about important moments (GER for example). In the end of the year, before the holidays, as we finished Golden Wind, they wanted to read the manga and as I'm not of huge fan of it, it was a bit reticent to do that but I still tried. So we read Stone Ocean together. Surprisingly, I really enjoyed reading the manga and I thought that I could read more of them, but after trying other mangas, it was more like Jojo's was an exception as it was not really pleasant. However, I still continued Jojo's Manga with Steel Ball Run and Jojolion and I was up to date around chapter 95. Some of my friends couldn't continue reading Jojo's but they watched the Anime of Stone Ocean.
It's a little bit long but it's really important to me that Jojo takes an important place for me and my friends, it's almost the thing that is linking us all around the world.
Within the years before the Stone Ocean Anime Announcement, I continued to watch for stuff around Jojo : I discovered the Light Novels and other stories in the Jojo universe, the Jojo Games and especially Eyes of Heaven. In the end, I wanted to knew more about this universe.
And then, I saw the announcement, after the event and I was really hyped for the next part. When I saw that Netflix was behind that, I was really happy as David Production will have ressources to produce the Anime in good conditions. But then, I learned about it, when Netflix backsatbbed me, the Batch Releases. There, I was doomed, I knew it was a terrible idea. I knew it would kill the hype. And I knew that some of my friends will bingewatch all of Stone Ocean. It was really frustrating. But, I still fought, I watched Jojo as it should have been released : in weekly Jojo Fridays. I even waited a whole month to be at the same time that the Japanese TV release. I cut myself from Reddit, as I kne there would be memes spoiling me the anime.
In the end, the first batch was released and, naive as I was, I though that the the 2nd batch would be released at the end of the Japanese TV release of batch 1. I still enjoyed the episodes, it was early stone ocean so it is not the best arc of the Anime but it was still good and as I read the manga, I knew theat there will be really good moments, especially in the last part with Dio's sons. In the end, I was only disappointed by the absence of Batch 2. I also didn't like the use of CGI, as I think the technology isn't totally ready to be used but I will discuss it later.
And it was the 2nd backstabb from Netflix, waiting 5 whole months for the next batch. It was really painful as the hype was already hurt, it was something like a murder for me. In the end, the anime was released and Netflix backstabbed me for the 3rd time : no new opening for the second batch. Even worse, they changed only one scene in the end of the opening. At this moment, I was terrified, I couldn't bear what they have done to this series that changed who I am and has so much importance for me.
Despite the batch release, I still watched the anime weekly and repeated the same things I did for the 1st batch except that I didn't waited to be at the same time as the Japanese TV release as it was likely that there would be 4 months to wait for the last batch. Even my friends, huge fans of Jojo's almost missed the release and some even didn't watched it until the last batch was released. Hopefully, the last batch was released only 2 weeks after I finished the 2nd batch weekly. This was a much more better batch than the two others, the arc is by far the better of Stone Ocean, there is a new opening with a variation. I was so disappointed that I genuinely thought that there would not be any variation for the opening, and the fact that only the last episode has the variation terrified me. I still think that as we have two transitions : Whitesnake -> C-Moon and C-Moon -> Made in Heaven, 2 variations would be perfect. In the end, this batch was really good.
After all of this, what is it now ? For me Stone Ocean was a disaster. Watching the Anime was really painful, not beceause it's bad but because it hurted me, it hurted the fan of Jojo inside me. Seeing this beautiful creation tortured by Netflix is really a shame. And what's worse, I could'nt do anything. Even the community couldn't fight this. Some people like me tried to watch the anime weekly but how many people, 1000, 10 000 ? Over the millions of Jojo fans, it's nothing. I do not blame them for that, they do what they want.
In the end, I can see some sort of loop. As Pokemon made me discover Jojo, Pokemon made me realize that Stone Ocean was poorly design. Pokemon is a really easy game, with tons of tools to stomp over the game, but some players use resctrictions (Nuzlocke, Soul-Link, ... ) to make the game more complex, and even with that, Some people will thay "Netflix isn't responsible for Stone Ocean being bad, it's only David Production that made the anime". In the end, yes, David Production used CGI and needed more time to finish the Stone Ocean Anime. But I will ask you some questions : Who didn't gave enough ressources to David Productions ? Who decided a Batch release ? Who cutted the budget ? The answer is the same : Netflix. David Production knows how Jojo's works, they know how the things should be done. I take responsible Netflix for almost killing Jojo's Bizarre Adventure and all the hype around. I made them responsible for hurting a series that means so much for me.
I will still wait for the Steel Ball Run Anime Adaptation, even if it tooks 3, 5, 10 years. I will wait, but I want something of high quality. I want this adaptation to revive the hype for Jojo. I want this Anime to correct the mistakes of Stone Ocean. As Steel Ball Run is a new beginning for Jojo, the Adaptation must be a revival of the series.

This matches my memories and overall opinion of this whole thing. As soon as I heard netflix was involved I knew this was coming.
For batch 1 there was still so much hype even with the fanbase being divided on the release format, and when batch 2 was announced for september, it was like the kiss of death. I feel like thats the exact moment when even the most optimistic fans realized this was pure bs. Which is a shame because batch 2 looked significantly better and batch 3 was amazing overall.
I hope netflix/WB bring back the weekly schedule. They have the perfect marketing in the form of jojo fridays. Jojo fans can create hype like no other fanbase, but we cant do the job for netflix.

I didn't feel the lack of hype as much as long-time fans, because I only watched Parts 1-5 and Batch 1 of Part 6 in Summer of 2022, without knowing that Batch 2 would come so soon after I finished the first one. So that was a very cool feeling for me, because hey, more JoJo is always welcome. Then I decided to read the manga from where Batch 2 left off and did enjoy it, although I was confused for parts of it (not because of the sudden switch from anime to manga, but because of some of the arcs themselves, like Heavy Weather for example), but that confusion went away when Batch 3 came out because I actually knew what was going on and what to expect, and I was really excited to see what I read previously get animated with top-tier voice acting and music. Not to mention I also finished JoJolion before Batch 3 came out, so I was fully caught up and ready for the original universe to be closed off in anime form as well.
I love the anime for Stone Ocean no matter how stupid its release schedule was, mainly because I wasn't there for JoJo Fridays when earlier Parts were airing and so it didn't affect me that much. But now that I'm all caught up, including reading The JOJOLands every month, I might feel differently about Parts 7, 8 and 9 whenever they might get animated, if they keep the Batch release schedule.

Because of the pandemic less time was available for the animators and staff, and Netflix batches meant 12 episodes had to be done by a certain date. Not to mention most in-house man power was being directed to Urusei Yatsura leaving fewer talented staff for JoJo. Stone Ocean with a better schedule would've made it a lot more visually pleasing, in an ideal world we could've gotten stuff like Ep 15 a lot more often. Those 2 were fine (I think Emporio sounded better than Pucci, but I agree that Pucci got better over time), but as a whole the dub made it kinda unbearable to watch a lot of the time. Jojo is known for its over-the-top reactions, but it tends to keep them varied and expressive. But the dub just had everyone lamely swear "fuck" at everything. There was so much cursing that it took me out of the show. I thought I just didn't like it because Jojo (before Netflix) had more variety in its swears and were less frequent, so it was less annoying. But then I ended up seeing scenes from previous seasons, I forgot how fun the dialogue used to be and now its just replaced with generic crass screaming, and its really repetitive at it. So it overall became annoying very quickly. I also felt like the acting was missing something that the original Japanese dub always has, I don't how to explain it properly other than the English dub phoning it in. But the Japanese voice actors always manage to keep each character unique and entertaining in their own way, with very expressive vocal mannerisms.

The thing that concerns me about this is that I feel like it could be a death knell for any hope of future anime adaptations of JoJo. Obviously the main one on people's lips is SBR, but other stuff - like the Thus Spoke OVAs or even Purple Haze Feedback - are arguably less likely than they've ever been. After all, statistics are key in the media industry - so seeing such a large "dropoff" in viewership probably signals that the series is going to be getting a lot less money moving forward.
Also, like... damn. I was really hoping people would finally start to like Stone Ocean but I guess it's not meant to be, huh

I finally finished watching the anime with the boys just last week. I thought the final batch was phenomenal, and in total the adaptation itself was great after they sorted out some of the problems from the first batch.
It really is sad how much Netflix screwed up, we still don’t even have special edition VIZ releases announced for the blu rays yet.
Hopefully, if SBR gets adapted soon they fix the terrible release schedule, (or lose the license, because I personally really dislike Netflix.)

It's funny, just yesterday, more or less around the time you uploaded this video, I was walking down a food fair in my city, in which even though the most important event were the food trucks with food from different countries, in the main square there were an awful lot of Stands (heh...) of different things like shirts, toys, posters, figures, bracalets, and stuff. There were a lot of random things, but in what refers to anime, there were the classics that never die like Dragon Ball, Pokemon, Naruto or some Sailor Moon (especially Dragon Ball), or even One Piece. Then in more modern things there were things about Spy X Family, some Attack On Titan, Chainsaw Man, even some Tokyo Revengers, and a whole fricking lot of Demon Slayer holy crap that thing is HUGE right now! And even though some other recent big anime were missing like Jujutsu Kaisen, I've come to the conclussion that being in broadcast is pretty important for the marketing and popularity (yeah, discovery of the year, I know) cause I have the feeling that when Jujutsu's second season releases I'm gonna see a lot of Jujutsu official or (mostly) unofficial merch around here.
I'm saying all of this because, at least in my country, I haven't seen almost *any* JoJo merch (not counting mangas of course) besides a shirt and some little figures in a really big and comercial city in a shop that sells mangas and otaku stuff. I used to think it was because of my third world country, and while that is obviously a big factor, now now I'm starting to wonder if things would be different if Part 6 had aired weekly in the west and I'd go to one of those places during it's broadcast

I actually think the biggest reason why Stone Ocean lost hype was due to the exclusivity. But at the end of the day I don’t care since Steel Ball Run is next baby! Just let several platforms have the anime and be weekly. I have faith in David Productions.
