  • In this video we go out to the great barrier reef (Moore Reef) in search for a clownfish aka Nemo. This is actually surprisingly difficult as clownfish are one of the more rare species of anemone fish.

Despite the weather conditions, it's been great fun! We'll definitely be back for a second part to find this freaking Nemo.

Actually, clownfish are relatively aggressive to protect their sanctuary in Anemone and chase any approaching fish. They also bite opponent with small teeth and can't harm us.In imaginary, whether they are hugh as shark and I believe that they are terrible than shark, baracuda or Queensland grouper.

They are not imposters. They are all species of clownfish. Nemo is Amphiprion occellaris or Amphiprion percula ( only a real expert can tell them apart. ) Clark's Clownfish is Amphiprion clarkii. I have a pair of Maroon Clownfish and a '"Dori' here in my living room in front of me. The yellow fish is not a Yellow Tang but might be a Mimic Tang, especially when young. . The blue/ black stripped fish in the cartoon is a juvenile of a type of angelfish They change pattern completely as Adult, so it is hard to determine which particular species. The stripped ones you saw are all species of damselfish,
I am very familiar with Moore Reef. I am shocked at all the dead and broken staghorn coral. It obviously was very battered with the cyclone and massive floods we had 6 months ago. But for a hard coral it is fairly quick to regrow. Barring another cyclone, or bleaching event, it should look back to normal in a few years. Some of it when alive is an electric blue in colour......very striking.
Boy did you choose a sucky day to go out to the reef! Hard to get a worse day......not only rough, but cloudy. That and the stirred up water it created with recent huge tidal variations made the underwater visibility horrible. I hope you get to see it again but in better conditions before you leave Cairns. I usually advise visitors to cancel and postpone their reef trip is the weather is like that. Trips are not cheap, and I hate to see people feel let down by their visit.
btw when I was growing up, my Dad's weekend job was skippering one of those tourist boats to Green Is, so we went to Green Is every weekend if we liked for free. But that was decades ago, when there was a heathy coral reef around it, including right off the beach at the jetty. Now it is crap....all dead. So sad.
PS "Since the release of "Finding Nemo" caused such a high demand for pet 'nemos' , most 'nemo"s are now farmed , some even selectively bred to have weird and odd patterns. I prefer the original wild type. They are found in aquarium shops here in Cairns....both wild caught and captive bred, Even you could have a pair of nemos at your place Greg. They are hardy and tough, and don't need to have a host anemone or a large tank. Interestingly, all clownfish start off as male. Only the largest individual at a host anemone then transitions into a female and then only then mates with the next dominate male. She keeps him and all other males subservient by constantly bullying them and dominating any food. If yu remove the female, within a month ,the next male in the hierarchy begins to transition into a female, and everyone moves up one rank. So in fact in the movie, Nemo's dad has a secret and Nemo is in for a big surprise . Dad is a tranny and now is his new mommy!

PS The fish you labeled 'Fake' in the thumbnail for this vid is a maroon clown...... I have a pair of them and a 'dori' in my marine tank. I sent you a couple of pics of them just now to your Insta account. Hard to get a good quality pic because they won't stay still, especially the Dory. It gets all shy and then hides under some coral..........a big scaredy cat and camera shy despite being the biggest fish in the tank.

Ahh so are all anemone fish considered clownfish? The reef did look a bit dead but I reckoned it might have something to do with pontoon as we didn't swim to far away it.
