      Turns out it wasn't the water pump at all. Ended up being the tensioner and fan pulleys. To replace those though I had to go through all these steps because their fastners are nested under everything else. This video was so valuable to me and helped me take on something otherwise I would have deemed to much for me. Thank you so much because we are really tight on my money right now and this saved my butt by being able to get it done at a reasonable price.

    Just finished mine with the help of this video, slight note. You have to reinstall the serpentine belt tensioner before the passenger timing belt cover, the alternator and the power steering pump. I see you did what I did and had to uninstall and reinstall all of that stuff to get it installed. Also I highly recommend getting the water pump inlet housing gasket instead of the gasket compound stuff. Granted I say that because mine leaked after I thought I was done with everything. Other than that, it was a solid video. Well done

    Edit 1: Halfway through, now for reassembly!
    Edit 2: Done and running.
    You did miss a step tho.
    Before you start putting the timing cover puzzle together, you need to install the serpentine belt tensioner pulley assembly.
    Right after the fan bracket.

      How many hours did it take you? I'm no where near being a pro so I will estimate my time for at least 1.5 times longer. My greatest fear is aligning the timing and broken bolts. Seems I have to break some bolts regardless of how careful I am.

    • @albertlevins9191
      @albertlevins9191 Před měsícem

      @@monkeyking-self-proclaimed7050 it was pretty brutal. Took me 3 days. However, when I had to do it, I had a broken rib from about 3 days prior.
      Having a broken rib makes this job a lot harder. Still, I would expect it to take a couple days.
      It is a lot of work.
      Good news? It isn't terribly hard to do.
      A little tip, the harmonic balancer usually comes off the crank with minimal effort.
      I used a couple prybars and it took very little effort to remove.
      Hopefully that helps.
      Best of luck.

    • @albertlevins9191
      @albertlevins9191 Před měsícem

      Oh, and use a paint marker to make marks on your gears and timing belt. Then transfer your marks from your old belt to your new belt. Should make that easy.
      As for torque. If you can't get a torque wrench to the bolt, tighten it by hand. Be careful. Aluminum can break under strain.
      Best of luck.

      @derekmcguckin2114  Před 2 lety +1

      You can either buy one of those funnels from any auto shop that fits right on top of your radiator, or just gradually fill it up. You’ll need to start the car, and turn up the heat on full blast inside the car. After a few mins, the water pump will stat pumping out the bubbles. You have to let the car run long enough that the thermostat opens up to pump any additional bubbles out of the system. May take you 10-15 mins before the system will no longer take any more fluid.

      Sounds like it’s on the original belt then. Rule of thumb for most Toyotas is every 100k. However, I think I would consider changing it out more because your truck is 17 years old and the belt is just as old and could potentially have some dry rot on it. Impressive that you have less than 100k on it! I had about 300k when I changed mine, and it’s been changed every 100k. Just rolled over 312k from a cross country trip, still going strong.

    • @derekmcguckin2114
      @derekmcguckin2114  Před 3 lety +2

      It does not have to be at TDC to tighten the bolt. However, without the rope or a tool to hold the crank still, it would just free spin as you tried to tighten it. By feeding a rope into the cylinder, as you go to tighten, the pistons moves up the cylinder but cannot complete the stroke because the rope bunches up agains the head. This locks the crank into position and allows you to tighten. Once tightened, turn the crank backwards a couple of degrees and then pull the rope back out of the cylinder.
      I hope that helps clear up any confusion!

      @@derekmcguckin2114 oh okay I get what you’re saying now. Good idea but I have the crank pulley holding tool. So I’m hoping with a long enough breaker bar I’ll be able to stop it from spinning by leaning the breaker against the frame. Thanks for clearing that up I was a bit confused there.

      For sure, glad to help! You’re obviously much better off with the tool instead of using the rope

    Roughly how long did it take you?

    • @derekmcguckin2114
      @derekmcguckin2114  Před 4 měsíci

      It took me a couple days, but that’s because I was doing it and simultaneously trying to record video. Not to mention having to drill out a couple broken bolts that added a lot of time, and having to work on it around my work schedule. If you have all the parts and tools and started in the morning, I bet you could have it done in under 6 hrs. Also depends if you’re working with a rusty environment or not. My sequoia spent most of its life in New Jersey, so it’s covered in rust.

    • @derekmcguckin2114
      @derekmcguckin2114  Před 8 měsíci

      Drilled a small hole in the middle and then used a standard bolt extractor.

    Terrible video in that the sound trails the video by about 1 minutes so it is hard to follow the disassembly and assembly sequence. But this is better than nothing.

    Can I change the pump without removing the timing belt ?

    • @derekmcguckin2114
      @derekmcguckin2114  Před 2 lety +2

      No, the pump is driven by the timing belt and located behind the timing belt, so only way to get to it is via removal.
