- Finally getting around to the teardown of the rearend off the 1978 Pontiac Firebird Formula W72 400 4 speed car. corporate ten bolt 8.5 gears 28 spline axles.. to be upgraded with a different set of gears and bigger 30 spline axles along with new Eaton style Limited Slip differential ( Posi ) Safe-T-Track
Useful video OMG. It's inspiring to see a guy with gray hair still tackling dirty jobs like this - laying on his back! Keep the Pontiac Faith. And keep the FAITH.
Any idea why my 79 Formula always spins posi, But on a lift the tires spin in opposite directions.
In neutral ? If your able to freely turn it in park with both in air no resistance it's just an open differential. Sometimes a open diff can switch sides and drift on between but sounds like ya got a single track. Dig in and do a oil change and verify ratio and see the differential
Not sure if it was in neutral. I assume it was in reverse , Because it's a factory 4 speed. It was on a lift at a service station. I turned the passenger side wheel forward and the driver side went the opposite way. But I only turned it an inch or so.
Yeah if it did move easily sounds like the standard open differential
Are you taking the ring gear off the carrier to store it. I’m asking because I’d like to see that as I could NOT get my 2.73 ring gear separated. Thanks
Yes Sir ! Maybe tomorrow. I'll zip em off with Milwaukee clockwise L hand thread and knock it off with my dull chisel and 5# hammer head
See todays video !
Please redo the video with someone else holding the camera . We could not see what was going on
I am sure I will have new one before long .
A mini spool would fix that right up... lol
No way Jose this ain't Vice Grip Garage... I already have the new posi and axles
@@OneManGarage I am just saying you can keep that carrier. It's a good 3 series just needs a mini spool.
