The Wicked Cast continues to be rounded out and boy is it getting full!
We wanted to share our thoughts on the recent Wicked Casting news, and as always, want to hear yours in the comments!

Not only does Jonathan Bailey have West End experience, he won the Olivier for his originating role as Jamie in "Company"! SO EXCITED to see him as Fiyero!
Yeah the only issue I have there is that he is and looks too old for the role. On the other hand the witches are also older actresses so I guess that's going to be fine :D
Just wanted to bring something up to combat a common misconception. Not all wheelchair users are wheelchair-bound. Many wheelchair users can walk, but need a wheelchair for bad days/flare ups, travelling longer distances, etc. Wheelchair users who don't use their wheelchair full time are called
ambulatory wheelchair users. It's always a completely personal choice as to when to use a mobility aid.
I use a cane at school and whenever else I feel like I need it for my disability. The problem with the lack of knowledge and understanding about ambulatory wheelchair users and mobility aids in general, is that there is a HUGE stigma and a lot of ableism around able bodied people assuming that ambulatory wheelchair users are "faking". I have an accessible parking permit, and when I get out of my car without my cane, or sometimes even with my cane, I've gotten stares. I get it though. Long before my disability got to this point, I used to silently judge people that I thought may be "faking" needing a mobility aid or an accessible parking permit. Even I, as someone born disabled, had to fight my own stigma and bias.
I'm not sure if Marissa Bode is an ambulatory wheelchair user or not, but this topic is always worthy of bringing up and discussing! 🥰 ♿️

I was gonna comment about this! I think it would have been possible to find a Nessa who uses/has used a wheelchair before now. Still so grateful that it's finally happening. I hope it'll pave way for people to get to do it on stage as well. Tory Vagasy is a great example of someone with a disability and experience with a wheelchair who would be perfect for the role❤

I'm not a wheelchair user, but no one had said anything about it yet, so I just wanted to start the conversation. I've learned so much since my disability and nerve pain have gotten worse and since my injury itself has aged, because accessing disability services and mobility aids is a taboo thing for young people. There is so much about being a young adult with a disability that isn't talked about. It's slowly changing, but try to find a single advertisement for mobility aids featuring someone that isn't elderly or a child. It's hard. TikTok has been a huge help to me in finding content showcasing other girls my age feeling comfortable using their mobility aids.
If you're an adult, you're limited to mainly mobility aids that are plain black, grey, or 1980s floral patterns. Some small businesses are popping up that make stylish and customizable mobility aids for young people, but it's going to be a bit before they become more mainstream. If they were more stylish, more acceptable, and less taboo for younger people, more disabled people would feel comfortable using them. I'm even in a Facebook group called "P1mp my mobility aid" for people who want to customize theirs 🤣
Sometimes I will even use my mobility aids when I don't 100% need them, just because I know it is helping to change people's perception of who uses a mobility aid (and I mean, it also can't hurt to keep it around!)
The fact that they didn’t cast Dr. Dillamond and James Cordon’s show is ending scares me so much

I’ve said Ethan Slater for Boq since 2019 and I’m soo sooo sooo thrilled that he was chosen. He’s truly such a talented guy! Tbh he’s the one casting choice along with Nessa that I’m completely down for! Thanks for the content on this Sam and Ryan!
All of the "new" characters except "Miss Coddle" are in the book and musical! Pfannee and Shenshen are Galinda's friends at Shiz, as well as a character named Milla who does not appear in the musical. Avaric is one of Fiyero's friends, Doctor Nikidik (not professor) is the replacement Life Science teacher after Doctor Dillamond has been killed. Miss Coddle may be a character based off of Nanny. In the book, Nanny is the Thropp family nanny, looking after Melena, then Elphaba, then Nessarose. She is the primary caretaker of Nessa and goes everywhere with her as Nessa will use Nanny to keep her balance. (In the books, Nessarose was born with no arms. She does not use a wheelchair and instead walks everywhere with help from Nanny when needed.) Nanny accompanies the Thropp girls to Shiz and later becomes Glinda and Elphaba's chaperone after Ama Clutch dies. She is very overprotective of Nessarose, which is maybe why Miss Coddle could be an ode to Nanny.
2:53- Jonathan Bailey won an Olivier award for his role in the West End production of Company 2019 and was in the Last 5 Years with Samantha Barks in the West End so I am so excited to see his musical theatre side shine!
I’m super excited to see Jonathan as fiyero, although I was hoping on Ryan ever since the misleading cast listed on google lol
Dr Dillamond is kind of an important role that I haven't seen them announce the casting for... Anyone else scared it will be he who shall not be named since he weasels his way into every other musical movie? 😂

First, I am SO EXCITED about this cast! It's stacked with amazing actors and I love that you guys came full circle from the predictions!
Second, would you guys consider making a video of the Mean Girls: The Musical the Movie cast? It isn't many people, but they have announced Regina, Cady, Janis, and Damien.
I'm with Ryan: I'll believe it when I see it. I'll officially be onboard with this whole "Wicked" movie once I see an official trailer for it. I haven't jotted down the films' supposed release dates, cause I won't believe what they say until they show me some official posters or trailers. Aside from "Crazy Rich Asians," I just know Michelle Yeoh for being the cool aunt in "Shang-Chi" and for being the voice of the Soothsayer in "Kung Fu Panda 2." I would NEVER have predicted her to be Madame Morrible, but I think she would do great as Morrible. Just out of curiosity: I wonder if for Elphaba's birth scene in "No, One Mourns the Wicked" if they will use an actual baby and use digital editing to make her green, or if they will use a CGI baby.

I am currently reading the books and it is so dark 😭 Literally Elphaba as a newborn, bites a woman’s finger off because her teeth are so sharp. Her first word was literally “horrors”.
The prologue with baby Elphaba and her terrifying teeth was the only part of the novel I liked.
Jon Chu really said “A Sentimental Man is boring as hell, we need Jeff Goldblum to spice it up” 😂
I’m so excited about Ethan Slater, Jeff Goldblum and Jonathan Bailey. I saw a video of Jonathan singing a song from the last five years and he is incredible!!!
I am SO excited for this cast! I don't know every single person, but I've read and heard so many good stories about everyone! Only down side is that we'll have to wait two years for the first movie and then ANOTHER year for the second movie. But I am sure it'll be worth it. 💚

I cringe every time I hear (or read) "from Bond girl to Oscar winner." It is an example of our "Hollywood--centric" culture.
The Bond franchise has a tradition of casting well-established (and VERY talented) foreign actresses.
In my opinion, Yeoh is one of the top five of these actresses.
1) Lotte Lenya
2) Michelle Yeoh
3) Diana Rigg
4) Honor Blackman
5) Judi Dench
Shenshen and ‘fanny’ (how it’s pronounced) are glindas main entourage. I’ve read the book too and I don’t recognise mrs coddle. I rlly do hope that they spend more time on Melina and Frex though. Maybe turtle heart and nanny as a bonus. Also the whole deal with AMA clutch and grommetik pls. And the time dragon clock more. And how Morrible is the true villain
I believe "Miss Coddle" may be an ode to Nanny, just based off of Nanny's coddling nature. Seeing Ama Clutch in the movie would be amazing, but unfortunately I think it won't happen because of how Nanny is already such a lesser known character. Adding in Ama would only complicate things more because most viewers will be watching the movie with only knowledge from the musical or no knowledge at all.

I recently saw wicked on broadway for my birthday in nyc and it was absolutely amazing definitely one of the best musicals of all time
In the book, all the girls attending Shiz need to have governesses & one of the reasons Elphaba & Galinda are roomed together is because neither of them have one at the start of term. Anyway i dont recall a Ms Coddle but maybe she’s Galinda’s governess, as she has a role in Galinda’s growth at school
I was thinking Miss Coddle may be a character similar to Nanny. The Ama Clutch plotline I believe is a little too complicated to include in the movie, especially because she is such a lesser known character. Nanny is also described as overprotective and having a coddling nature.

I'm intrigued as to who's going to play Doctor Dillamond. He's a pretty important character for them to have not announced yet. Either way, this cast sounds great. I'm not sure if Goldblum or Yeoh can sing, but neither character sings a whole lot, as far as I remember. Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande are both great choices for their respective roles, and I can't say I'm familiar with the rest of the cast, but from what I know about their careers, they're going to be great. I'm excited for this movie, and I really, really, really hope that they do Defying Gravity right. I have high expectations, especially since this is coming from the director of In the Heights, which was a super well directed musical.

I love how some of the newer casting has me more excited for this than the main two. I can just sense this will be soooo much fun so hoping we get lots of teases over the next few years to help hold us over.
I mean Jons directing of the Step Up films & In The Heights I'm excited for the dancing scenes in wicked.

Just wanted to hop on and say that a lot of the credit for shooting dance numbers also goes to the cinematographer!! And luckily it is the same woman as in the heights/tick tick boom 😊
I’m so excited for this movie! There’s still a few characters that need to be cast possibly! We have not heard about Chistery, Dr. Dillimond, Elphaba’s mom or if Dorothy will actually be in it! I wonder how they will do the cowardly lion… Will it be computer graphics… Or will it be similar to the Wizard of Oz…It will be really interesting to see what they do.

They must have casted James Corden as Dillamond and are too embarrassed to admit it now since perception of him has shifted further recently. I can’t think of any reason why they would keep that particular casting quiet, and they can’t have cut the role either. I’m deeply concerned
I think they’re replacing it with coddle 🤷🏼♀️ I know they’ve said there’s new music so my guess is they’re cutting something bad and adding something else in its place to be like a power duet with settle and erivo
The insider said it’s a unknown ginger Broadway performer, also I’ve seen rumors that dillamond will be a costume used by a stuntman and the real dillamond will just put his voice over it

Boq: I agree with Sam that his casting makes a LOT of sense because he played SpongeBob Sqaurepants in the Musical (both characters are a bit naïve but are willing to help ANYONE out) I can’t wait.
Nessa: OMG!!! I can’t believe that they are casting someone that is in a wheelchair. As Ryan said, you can’t cast some who uses a wheelchair in the stage production but with movie magic it will be a FANTASTIC moment for anyone who uses a wheelchair full time (at least for me) to see Nessa stand up.
Question: why are they making two movies? It’s not longer than other musical movies so there is no real reason to do it.
Bc theres a lot of unfinished points in the musical, everything is rushed, especially the second act, for me personally when it ended I was like “what? Already?” Bc it’s just so rushed

Hi just on the wheelchair using role of Nessa,I definitely believe we could have had a wheelchair user in this role on broadway by now. I am an ambulatory wheelchair user (there are people who use their wheelchairs much more than me nut it basically just means I both walk and use a wheelchair due to disability) I am a theatre performer. Ambulatory wheelchair users often get overlooked but this would be how to cast a person with disabilities in this role on-stage and still have them walk for that segment of the show.

Great video! So interesting to hear your thoughts on the cast. Just a point of education, not all wheelchair users are paralyzed. Some people only need wheelchairs some of the time. They could have illnesses that vary day to day. On a good day they could walk some and on not so good days they rely on the wheelchair to get around. There's a myriad of reasons someone may use a wheelchair. Not everyone in a wheelchair is paralyzed and people who can physically walk but still use a wheelchair to improve their quality of life are not faking. I know you meant no harm with your comments. I just wanted to spread some education and awareness.

Hey, will just make comments on the nessa rose casting on-stage I believe it would be great to have an ambulatory wheelchair user play her, this is as an ambulatory wheelchair user myself. Ambulatory wheelchair users often get overlooked especially in theatre and I think this would be a great step.

I read the book twice and did my thesis on this book and don’t remember some of the minor characters.
Sticking with the book, I think the only character who should not be a POC (bear with me here) is Dorothy. Only because sticking with the book, Dorothy is Elphaba’s parallel in every way. White is the standard of beauty and being a POC was considered ugly even if they were beautiful in everything else. Nessa, also white, despite being in a wheelchair, she was more beautiful than Elphaba and people globbed on to her. Glinda, white was seen as a ruler because of her beauty, at first, until she showed more qualities.
I think for this theme to come across, Dorothy has to be white.
Again, please bear with me on this one.
How can you not know Michelle Yeoh before Crazy Rich Asians? you haven't seen her on Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon? or even in Tomorrow Never Dies?
Michelle Yeoh's career goes way farther back than you guys may even realize: mid 1980's. Then she was a Bond girl opposite Pierce Brosnan in "Tomorrow Never Dies". But her really big early role was as the star of Ang Lee's "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" (2000) for which she earned a BAFTA Best Actress nomination. If you haven't ever seen it, you should.

It's not so much the actors ability to do the roles but the ages of some of the actors that really bothers me. Cynthia Erivo and Johnathan Bailey are both around 35 and Ariana is 29 and at the beginning of Wicked they are all just entering college. While on stage the ages of the actors don't really matter in film it is a lot more noticeable and I feel like this was a great opportunity to cast some younger people, especially since they decided to make this a two parter.

Hate that it’s two parter. Like the casting I’ve seen. Let’s get Ryan in the film as Crope or Tibbet? If he’s willing. Tho idk if they’ll even include Crope and Tibbet cause it leans into some potentially “unsavory” things and the Karens of the world will hate that. Particularly Tibbet’s story. But they’re both incredibly interesting characters that deserve to be seen. Idk I just want Ryan to be I this and Crope and Tibbet are a couple of my favorite characters from the book.

So Wicked... The musical where someone literally flies ... Has never been able to cast a Nessa who actually uses a wheelchair? I'm sorry, but that's ridiculous. Firstly, not all wheelchair users are can't walk; some can but still use a wheelchair for a motley of valid reasons. Even if the Nessa in question couldn't, they could have used a body double or lighting tricks or a ton of other options. I'm so sick and tired of Broadway and the greater theater world excusing and encouraging ableism.
