  • Strzelecki was an early Polish explorer and surveyor. His name is given to one of the most desolate regions of the Australian continent, north to Cooper's Creek where in ancient times thousands of Aborigines lived in a paradise surrounded by desert and where many of the early English explorers of the continent perished but where true bushmen achieved remarkable feats.

I made that trip in 1990 in a Isuzu van with my wife and 2 year old Daughter. The trip of a lifetime busted a radiator hose in Coopers creek that was scary. Luckily there was a military convoy on the road. Their mechanics stopped and were able to do a makeshift repair for me. I have memories that will last a lifetime.

These days you'd "need" a bullbar, lifted 4wd, mud terrain tyres, 690 lights, 2 uhfs, 4 antennas, a VHF, a sat phone, a phone signal amplifier, storage drawers, air compressor, tools, spare parts, fluids, a fridge, a rooftop rent, a snorkel, diff locks, awnings, a chip and exhaust system, a dedicated navigation system and of course a portable shower or even a 90k caravan. This shows it's all 70% marketing, 20% fear mongering and 10% common sense and comfort.

Jack proves that if you drive carefully and are aware of the surroundings you don't need 4WD. 4WD only came available in Australia in the late '40's after WW2, blokes had been crossing Australia in 2WD Leylands and Ford for decades before.
Makes me laugh these days when I drive up to Wilpena in the Flinders, all the Disco's, X5's, Cayenne's etc parked outside the 'visitors interpretive centre' with there owners sucking lattes in the cafe, it's a bitumen road all the way there, I have driven a 1984 Toyota Corolla up there.

Amazing how that pile of salt bush he set fire to with his jex moved a good metre away from it's original spot where the whole damn sigma would have gone up in smoke. Well done Russell! This amazing Sigma should be in a museum. Thank god Russell, sorry I mean Jack, had the worlds most amazing shitbox sigma that was unstoppable, even the Cobblers sandhills were no match for the sigma. Thank god for Russell that the mother eagle didn't latch on to his rather sizeable backside as he awkwardly clambered up the dead tree for his intrusive gawk. Sorry but I have a stitch from laughing so loud at this living legend.
