BEST 5 WAYS to OPEN and 2 WAYS to PREVENT STUCK Water Filter Housing!

  • Can’t get your water filter housing open to change the filter? No matter how hard you try and how hard you push it will not open? In this video you’ll learn 5 techniques to get that housing open so you can change your water filter and 2 things you can do to make sure it doesn’t happen again, all starting right now!
    It seems so easy, just unscrew the filter housing, remove and replace the filter and you’re good to go, right? Well sometimes you just can’t get it unscrewed so here are 5 great tips to help you out!
    1) Turn your water supply off. You probably have a shutoff on the supply line located before the filter. If not, go to the hydro panel and turn the pump off.
    2) Relieve the water pressure on the lines before you attempt to unscrew the housing that holds the water filter. Turn a faucet on inside the house to relieve the pressure and let the water run until it slows to a trickle. Then shut off the water after the filter housing to keep the water from the house from draining back.
    3) Place a bucket under the filter housing. If the housing has a relief button push that to make sure all the pressure is gone. Make sure that the filter housing is securely fastened. Brace the plumbing while unscrewing the housing and take it off. Remember you will be turning the housing to the left, “lefty loosey, righty tighty”.
    4) If it does not come loose, you will need to try the following:
    1) Using a blow dryer to heat up and expand the outside of the housing until it becomes very warm, knock it with a hammer and remove with the filter housing wrench.
    2) Use two filter housing wrenches together, one for each hand and twist the housing with both wrenches. waterestore.ca/search?type=pr...
    3) You can sandwich two filter housing wrenches together and add pipe to give you more leverage.
    4) Use a metal filter wrench like this one, which is stronger and longer than the typical plastic one. You can buy these on Amazon in a number of sizes. If that doesn’t work, you can always add on a piece of pipe to that wrench.
    5) Another alternative is a Lisle Strap wrench like this amzn.to/342s4bl You just wrap it around your housing and with a ½” socket wrench add some torque to release the filter housing. You can even add a piece of pipe to the socket wrench for more torque.
    Then just clean out the housing and replace the filter.
    To lessen the possibility of this happening again in the future I definitely suggest you do two things!
    1) Always make sure that you check the bottom of the filter housing for o rings left behind from the old filter before putting in the new filter
    2) Use some plumber’s clear silicone grease and or replace the o ring so you don’t need to tighten it so much to begin with to keep it from leaking. waterestore.ca/products/plumb...

      I turned off the valve before the housing, there isn't one after, and pressed the release (got sprayed in the face 😂🙄) anyways. I'm scared to take it off because a ton of water is coming out. I screwed it back on but it won't stop dripping (water is still off) anybody please help!!😬

    • @GarytheWaterGuy
      @GarytheWaterGuy  Před 3 lety +5

      @@tiffanybusse199 don't worry. The water is flowing back from your house because you don't have a shut off after the filter. As long as you have shut off the water going to the filter run water at a faucet nearby until it slows right down to nothing and then remove the filter and catch any water remaining in a bucket.

      I own a retail water store and my maintenance guy locked the housing very tight to prevent leakage with chain wrench after filter change 🤦🤦🤦 I tried strap wrench with breaker bar, water pump plier, 2 filter housing wrenches with 2 pvc pipes attached by the handles, etc etc. Nothing really worked 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I got new housing after all.

    Good advice here. I worked on large diesel trucks for many years. I had a Snap-On strap wrench like the one you here, and used it on the big oil filter housings on those trucks. Worked really well. I use a silicon grease on the water filter O'rings too. And, when installing the new water filter and housing, I never tighten them with the wrench. Just hand tight is plenty.

    Always remove, clean, and inspect the o-ring. They will eventually need to be replaced if there are any nicks or tears or worn spots, but assuming there is no physical damage they should last for at least two to three years. Then apply plumbers (food grade) clear silicone grease to both the o-ring and the threads on the housing. A light coat is all you need.

Once I relieved the pressure on the line and then shut the valve, the filter unscrewed easily. I use petroleum jelly (Vaseline) to lube the "O" ring and it has never failed me. I would also recommend that the strap used in case the supplied wrench won't work is to to a auto supply house and purchase a strap wrench that I have used to remove oil filters on 18-wheelers big diesel engines.

    Hi. We are new to this home water filtration technology. Thank you for doing such a clear, thorough job of showing us how to change filter and what to do when you have a real problem. i.e stuck big blue housing. I am handy but your video shows me what i can and cannot do, since i do not wish to break the housing. Thank you again. 100% great

    Thanks for a great video, when I change my water filter, I put a little petroleum jelly (Vaseline) on my Oring, and that helps lube the Oring for future removal. Just like putting a film of oil on your oil filter before installing it on your vehicles. Thanks for your common sense videos.

    • @GarytheWaterGuy
      @GarytheWaterGuy  Před rokem +1

      Yes, but you should be using plumbers clear silicone grease instead of vaseline waterestore.com/products/hum-plumbers-secret-clear-silicone-grease-food-grade-5-gram Vaseline is petroleum based and will degrade that o ring over time.

    Thank you! The last time it was stuck, I twisted hard enough to break the plastic water pipe going to the filter cannister. Made a job for myself, for sure. With re-installation I coated the threads and O-ring gasket with Vaseline. Next time should be much easier. If not, out comes the hair dryer!

    Great, great details Gary!! I also followed your video for replacing the UV lamp and cleaning the sleeve for the Viqua VH200 F10 system. All of that went well because of your clear instructions and details. However, the filter housing will not budge. I tried increasing the torque by adding a plastic tube to increase the handle length - didn't work. Before all that, I pressed the pressure release button at the filter housing top and nothing happened - no sound. I also completely opened the drain hole at the housing bottom. A bit of water came out, but not a lot. My water filter model is the Viqua CMB-510-HF. I'm considering to buy the steel wrench, but it's not very clear that there is a matching one at Amazon. My plastic wrench has an inner diameter of 7 1/2" and there are 10 protruding notches. Nothing on Amazon looks close. If I can't get a matching steel wrench, which of these two would be better to buy: 1. Adjustable belt strap wrench with 9" steel handle or 2. Lisle 60200 HD Strap Filter Wrench. Thanks for your great videos. I have subscribed.

    • @GarytheWaterGuy
      @GarytheWaterGuy  Před rokem

      I prefer the Lisle. Did you try heating up the outside of the housing? My installer pooh-poohed the idea until he tried it. Now he is a convert.
