Wow, just realized this. J Mascis, JazzMaster, Jason Mays. Initials for all the are JM, JM, JM respectively! Is it a conspiracy to make me finally buy a Jazzmaster!?!?!?
The truth is out there!
John Mayer
I love the way you guys gave your thoughts on which guitar fits what genre etc. it was really helpful
Your the most interesting to watch channels.. good humor, nice reviews, good style.. not sosld out to subscribers!! Keep it up, 5/5 ! Thanks for the video ! Buying the 50s one, love the color.
Excellent comparison and terrific graphics!
I just found this channel and I love it!
First time coming across this channel, very much in love already!! Can’t wait so see what’s in store for the future from y’all!
Also, I have a classic vibe body that I’m working on and this video has sold me on getting a j mascis neck for it 😎
thanks for the support!
I have the J Mascis, great guitar! The CV late 50s is also available on thomann!
You guys rock!! Love this
I LOVE my 2015 Squier JM JM 😍😇 upgrades soon: mastery bridge, kinman fatmaster, kluson etc :) great video guys!
I have the J Mascis. I had a rough time adjusting to the jumbo frets and chunky neck, but I think I'm finally loving playing it
That's whats up! I love that neck so much and the fret board is my favorite!
New subscriber here... love your videos!!
I went into my local shop about 6 months ago to pick up the J Mascis they had on the wall forever and lo and behold it was gone. I ended up grabbing a road worn 60s that was also on the wall forever. Took a lot of work to get it set up but it plays like a dream now (Antiquity I pickups, Mastery vibrato - left the stock bridge as it works perfectly fine). Local shop just got another J Mascis in and the neck and fretwork on it is absolutely flawless compared to my road worn... for half the money. Overall it's excellent and I can't think of a better guitar value at that price point. If I didn't have one I'd snatch it up in a heartbeat.
I see you updated the list! Very kool comparison! I still prefer the JM Jazzmaster. I've got one that I've been playing for years. Specially since Fender stopped producing these beauties.
Squier has come a long way!....quality is right up there with alot of the USA made stuff. I just picked up the 40th anniversary squier jazzmaster with the gold hardware and I gotta say that it blows away my friends MIA jazzmaster he paid $1500 for.
I got the olympic white....I love it!!!
I love this channel!.....very much the best reviews on all things guitar related. Very informative!.....good job to the both of you. The two of you were the reason why I decided to get it. Thank you so much and I'm definitely gonna stay tuned to ya.
Thanks for this review.....
Thanks for the shootout! J Mascis model is the best jazzmaster I've ever played. If you think about getting one, just stop thinking, go buy one right now, you will not regret it.
The neck on the JMJM is by far the best neck I’ve played!
@@JasonTMays agree the only neck close is the very first strat kit i built i barely sanded it for profiling purposes, left it fat as a bat and just made it super super smooth with danish oil and slight sanding. It feels very simular to the back of the jmjm neck altho the jumbo frets on the jmjm make the front side more preferable
Great episode! Thanks. I've been very curious about these two. I'm leaning heavily toward the CV. I have the 50s Tele and Strat CVs, so it'd fit right in.
Thank you! I’d definitely say get it! I love mine so far!
@@JasonTMays Hard to come by up here, it appears (in Canada). I'd like to get my hands on one to play. I know it won't be the CME FSR, but I'm good with the CV model.
Great video!!
Thank you!!!!
Hey folks first let me say I love your channel. After watching this review I so wanted a Squier J Mascis Jazzmaster and when I looked it up on line discovered there is a sale presently going on. They are currently going brand new for $449.99 which is a fifty dollar savings and the shipping is free so one only need be concerned with the sales tax. : ) And to think some knuckleheads are trying to rip people off on places like ebay where they are asking upwards of $1,000.00.
Thank you for being a JM friend. Down the tailpiece and back again. Your toan is true, you’re a pal and a something, something guitar related.
we love it when people catch the little things, like that.
I've seen two videos today and subscribed. I want to deep dive the two separate videos. Just from hearing what I heard here, the pickups on the J. Mascis seem hotter.
editing is fire
Nelsen thanks you
There's a older Squier Jazzmaster Deluxe, and it's basically the J Mascis in red. It's got all the same specs. I think the Andertons/CME purple Jazzmaster is the same as well, so if anyone's hankering for different colors, there are options.
Yeah, basically the same... Just without 12 inch radius and vibrato
@@mikolajbojnar There's one with the vibrato. That's the one I got.
The dinosaur junior guitar seems to be the most versatile that can switch between both worlds, I've only heard great things about the neck and the playability and even the pickups it seems like fender or squire nailed it out of the park
Apart from the finish, I’d the Mascis’ neck somehow different?
Just bought a JM JM body which is neat because I've got a 35 year old Fender strat neck I'm going to put on it
That JM is gonna have some mojo!
Traverse Town theme in the backgroundddddd!!!!!!!!
And suddenly i want to live in the j mascis rhythm circuit
Y’all making me want to seek out a J Mascis after I only just but a CV-this explains maybe why they weren’t in stock though 😭
Yeah, we kinda made this under the assumption that the 1950s CV was the upcoming replacement for the discontinued J Mascis
@@WorkingClassMusic I’m def happy with my CV, but may follow through with sanding down the neck or replacing the pickups-just for fun 👀
Ace video, btw!!!!!
Nissssssssssssssssssce 🍻
Love me sum JMs but I wish there was a broader color finish option!
*magic konch shell voice*
maybe some day....
Yea, fender seems to make all the cool colors FSR.
@@WorkingClassMusic Last time I picked up a konch shell I didn't hear the ocean , I heard the Little River Band - reminiscing...
Deep cut with Jackie Chan adventures.
Both guitars sound and look totally fine.
Got to admit I found it a little difficult to catch which one was playing at what time during the comparison - they look a bit too similar (I know the pickups are clearly different but it still threw me somehow... maybe I just need more coffee). :D
Since the CV has a less acute string break angle, I'm guessing it might benefit from a little shim-a-ma-jig for those who like to strum or bend aggressively?
The j mascis comes with an angled neck pocket btw. No shim needed.
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
i don't know how i missed this video. since i know both of you seem comfortable with jazzmasters, i have to ask: how much (if at all) do you miss the 22nd fret? i know i am kind of an idiot for asking but i have gone from 24 to 22 (with 22 becoming my defacto limit).
I dont miss it at all.
Interesting that they're discontinued. I heard rumors of that back in July, so I emailed Fender, and the rep said they were still in production with no plans to discontinue it. I feel betrayed.
i keep reading that, but i bought a new one last week
@@PageandPlant4Life Just got one yesterday!
@@The0nionKnight was yours set up almost perfectly? Mine was and I was surprised
@@PageandPlant4Life pretty much. I got it from guitar center.
Err, one was played with a pick the other wasn't, not fair. Maybe same person should have played both for future videos. Thanks anyway for showcasing this your video seems to be the only one on CZcams with the white version.
Is the JM JM neck love down to the satin finish, or is there something about the shape you’re also liking better?
boffum
Besides the comfortable profile and satin finish, it's the nut width that makes difference. JMJM neck is a little bit wider than standard necks. The nut width on the Mascis is 42.5mm and it's 42mm on other Fender/Squier guitars. It may seem like a little difference, but it has a big impact on how it feels in your hands. Squier Deluxe Jazzmaster (iron man one) got the same neck btw
@@vodkamagic9966 but its also a little thinner than most necks.
Its a great combo for me. I got fat short sausage fingers.
I just assembled my own (pink!) JM and used the Mascis pickups because they are so good. No ice picky highs that will rattle your audience tooth fillings... Just warm and lovely.
i bet that looks great in Pink
most things do
It was between the CV and the J Mascis for me and I chose the CV. It’s overall higher quality IMO. Thanks for making such a informative video on these!
The J. Mascis has a much better neck than the CV. The pickups are hotter on the J. Mascis than the CV, but I wouldn't say better. Just hotter. It just depends what tone you want.
@@hooskerdu1 I actually ended up putting a JM neck from a Fender road worn Jazzmaster on the CV. I also put Fralin pickups in it but now I’m in the market for pickups closer to the J Mascis. Turns out I don’t really like OG Jazzmaster pickups too much
@@michaelbreach5862 Nice! I would suspect you probably have a pretty nice sounding and playing guitar now.
Almost bought that 50’s JM this weekend but got a Jaguar instead because I don’t have one of those. Labor Day sales… IT’S A TRAP
4:30 - What’s this movie clip from please?
That's stock footage Nelson found on the internet
@@WorkingClassMusic fair enough
Looks quite interesting
Sort of a cross between “Lawrence of Arabia“ and “Dune“!
Here’s a question for you:
Is the J Mascis neck so very different to most JazzMasters or is it just got a satin finish and jumbo (frets)?
Does the HS deluxe without the tremolo have exactly the same neck anyway?
Thanks in advance if you get a chance to reply😉👍
How do the trems compare? Which one stays in tune better when you use it? Love the channel!
both are the same.
J Mascis = Joseph Donald Mascis Jr. (born December 10, 1965), better known as J Mascis.
Yes! Too bad the Late 50s FSR isn't available in Canada and won't ship to Canada. I checked several UK shops and Chicago Music Exchange. Will not ship to Canada. *sad
Sorry to hear that. Hopefully that'll change one day
Did you try Andertons yet? I know they ship over seas!
“A” 🤣 vwhatttt
Do you suggest this model (late 50s) or the CV 60s? Is there really a difference? Thank you! 🙏🏼
There is no difference sonically...so, it's just going to boil down to which you like better in terms of looks. it's really the same guitar.
I had the blonde late 50s. Cool color but watch the wood under the finish. They always seem to have some oddball blem that shows through the wood
Wonder why they stopped making the Squier mascis jazzmaster? It sold so well.
They probably wanna sell more of the 40th anniversary jazzmasters.
Only so much production line workers. Also sales probably slowly tapered off.
Its like how cars get renewed and remodeled every 7-10 years.
