Is it a good idea to take your RV on the Million Dollar Highway? There are breathtaking mountain, valley, and gorge views between Ouray and Silverton. There are also hairpin turns and steep drop-offs making the drive a real challenge towing a fifth wheel.

As someone who lives here it’s always kinda fun to see how our places look to other people. And while I’ve been up and down the pass so many times that it doesn’t even phase me I 100% agree with you that it’s spectacular and after 27 years here the views still never get old!
Our first trip with our solitude 390rk-r was from Texas to Ouray CO. We took the million dollar highway. That was before I knew my 2018 truck had a different way of engaging the compression brake than my 2005. I thought tow/haul mode would do it, and I thought it was broken. So we did it with just the truck and trailer brakes. Slowing way down, then coasting in a lower gear until I had to brake again. It was scary for my wife, because she was on the edge of the road. We made it. It would be better with the compression brake, but she has assured me... we won't do that again.
Agree, we drove the Million Dollar Highway towing our Airstream in 2016. But try to add major construction with engine shutdowns twice for >20-30 minutes and a huge bike race on the highway at the same time!
Nathan is brave. I know when driving in stressful situations my neck and the area under my right shoulder blade hurts. I can understand the stress. Yes it is beautiful. Getting there my be a breath stealer.
I went the alternate way in Aug. Lizard Head Pass, and it was pretty easy.
Looking at your footage I am glad I did
I love, love, love the Million Dollar Highway! My husband and I did it in the winter the first time and it was a beautiful sunny day, clear roads and snow all around. Hardly any traffic. It was spectacular! We did not have an RV though so it was easier!
Amazing road! We had an amazing time!
Love that road!
Love Colorado . Been there a few times. The views never get old.
so beautiful! Agreed ❤️
Definitely one of the great scenic drives in America !! In 1996, I flew into Denver and rented a convertible to do a south west
Colorado tour, Phenomenal !!! Love the Rockies !!
Another great one is the Pacific Coast Highway in CA,....If you really want an adrenaline rush, drive the northern section At NIGHT
when the moon is full or close to it...Your headlights disappear on the switchbacks when you are looking at the Ocean over the Cliff
!!! Really Impressive !! ( Not recommended while Towing Anything ) :)
Awesome ……may God ride with you and keep your family safe!
We took it this year pulling a 10 ft cargo trailer. It was raining and snowing at the top. I loved the scenery, it was Beautiful but there was too many on the edge areas for my liking. There was one area where road was undercut and lookedine it was going away. I'm glad we did so I can say we did it so we could see the beauty.....but never again. Oury was SO VERY Busy so no where to stop and park.
Me too - did it once - never again
We did The Million Dollar Highway pulling our rig back in May, absolutely loved it! Can’t wait to go again. Your video brought back such wonderful memories with our kids age 5 & 2. You all are one of the reasons we started RVing 2 years ago. Love you guys!
Back in the early 90’s, me and a buddy of mine took a jeep trail from Silverton to Telluride, which involved a narrow mountain-edge road that went above tree-line. While on the way down into Telluride in my ‘92 Bronco, we encountered a station wagon coming up the other way. I got pretty nervous as I hugged the mountain-side of the road, only to encounter the mother and her kids just casually driving past us in the other direction. The drama kept coming as I failed to stay in low gear enough, which caused the brake lines to vapor-lock. As the brake pedal slowly went to the floor, I carefully costed into a grove of Aspens not too far from the main rod into Telluride. Since we weren’t sure just what happened to the brakes, we hiked down to the road and hitched a ride into town. It turned out that the guy who gave us a lift was film director Olver Stone, who has/had a vacation home near there.
Wow, what a story.
I would have gone around and then just watch your video again. Thank you for sharing. Blessings
My fix on a Sunday night, always look forward to your channel.
Yah! So glad you enjoy!
Almost 6 years and you haven't changed much, still looks like a great couple.
Love your journey
Keep them videos coming and as always.
Thank you 😊.
Aww thank you!
Did that drive with a 25’ airstream up from Durango and then back. Both ways I was white knuckled, although coming back was a little better since I knew what I was about to do. We stayed at that Durango RV resort (old KOA) and absolutely love it there. There is nothing better than the sound of the river as your going to sleep. Best fly fishing in Durango.
It’s been years since we drove the MDH but I remember the beauty. We were in a car and it was scary. I can’t imagine doing it pulling a big rig like yours! Kudos to you Nathan!Hugs to Hensely and JJ. God speed.
I knew from the opening you were entering Colorado. When we moved out from Florda in 1999 we landed in Woodland Park, west of Colorado Springs. Sea level to 8500 feet in two weeks while visiting relatives on the way. Took some adjusting until our bodies adapted to the mountains. We would drive from WP to Cripple Creek (9,300 ft.) fairly regularly. Twice on the way that road would. be carved out of cliffs...without guardrails. Nerve wracking at first but after a few trips on a motorcycle I found myself riding with a friend on his bike at 60 mph in pouring rain. Your ability to ignore the "ditches" a few hundred feet deep grows with time.
I remember when I rode in the car when my dad was driving the million dollar highway same as last time just so so much snow last time definitely a cool place!
Great video. I love Colorado. Got to ride the train from Durango to Silverton many years ago. It was a photographers special run in September and it was awesome. Great job Nathan on Million Dollar Highway. My friends and I were in an SUV and we loved it.
You did good guys I was so nervous watching, the views were awesome. Take care and have a great week. ❤❤🇬🇧
Thanks Donna! Have a great week as well!
Wow - that highway looks amazing! Reminds me of our trip on MT-49 in Montana! So beautiful, amazing scenery!
love. love. love. As I've said a dozen or more times, THANKS for sharing.
Great job Nathan! Our towing days are over. We sold our rig and joined the Hilton club. I would have never gotten my husband to tow on that road. Wow....you did great!
My Favorite Road in America !!! Especially between Durango and Ouray. What makes the drive even more dangerous is that you can't hardly keep your eyes on the road because of all of the beautiful scenery ! The Line Creek Burn Area turn-out / overlook during late Sept. thru early Oct. Is absolutely amazing. It is just a heavenly tapestry of colors. The view coming in over either Silverton or Ouray is breath-taking.
Stunning!
Our son and a friend did a Colorado Trail hike...which meant driving from MN to Frisco, CO. So it was a bit nerve wracking as a parent sending two 20 year olds out of state on a hiking trip that will take them over 10,000 feet. So we researched it and I had my son watch I 70 driving videos since they would be driving through the Eisenhower Tunnel....and they did the trip and had a great time and got back safely. So it was a bit of a risk but we educated ourselves and set expectations for success.
I've been on the Million Dollar Hwy several times and I love it. I've been there in different seasons. I love it. I live in Coloradoand have been all over the state both in my class A as well as just a car. Enjoy Colorado!!
Hello there👋👋,how are you doing today?hope you had a great day ? 💕!
Very nice spectacular views. Thank you for taking me with you on the million dollar highway. That was awesome. I’m so glad you made it through safely. Friends of mine were going to go there this past week but changed there minds because they sure how covid was doing there. They were going there by car. No Rv attached. They decided to go to Lake Tahoe. You ended up with getting some great shots with videoing. Thank you Nathan and Marissa for doing this video. Hope you have a great night and great week and see you soon.
We have driven up to Rico from Cortez, we’re we stayed last time around late Sep early Oct, we had heard that it was a difficult drive but we did not want to spend all day in the truck driving so we went to Rico and back to Cortez. We did visit the National Park there and saw some awesome ruins. We will have to try and get up to Oray one of these days. Thanks for taking the calculated risk and showing us all how beautiful it is. Travel mercies you guys.
Was going to mention did y’all see the bolder that fell off the side of the mountain and just barely crossed the road! They fixed the road and left the bolder in place.
Nice scenery guys. I need to get there soon. Keep the good stuff coming and give the kids a hug for me.
I am right there with you Nathan. No guardrails!? Are you kidding me? I would have not taken a breathe and would have had my eyes closed most of the time!
You are all so beautiful! What a wonderful family getting out there living life full of adventures. So AMAZING! We love your videos. I hope the CAN/US border opens for next summer so we can drive that highway. Thank you Nathan for letting me know I’m not the only slow RV driver. I have a shirt that says ‘we’ll get there when we get there” and it has a turtle driving the camper. Keep safe!
Thank you so much!
We have been watching you all for years and love seeing all your adventures. Especially when you visit our backyard. We live outside Durango. Welcome to Colorado!!!
Thanks so much!
Just watching you drive this road made me worried and thinking please no tire blowouts.
Going downhill in the mountains, I'm assuming you do it the safe way and use your brakes just to slow down from too fast to safe quicky. Stab the brakes hard for a few seconds, then coast again. And do that at regular intervals. Keeps the brakes cooler. Also use one gear lower than what got you up the mountain. (That's what truckers do.) I relived exiting Yellowstone to the east while watching this one. Another thought. I drove a big rig long enough to learn mountain driving, but the east exit from Yellowstone in a car made my sphincter very nervous.
My family has a trucking company and our trucks and 53' trailers go over Red Mountain Pass/Million Dollar Highway. My husband used to drive this route all the time in the winter with chains on. Not for the faint of heart but the most beautiful scenery you've even seen! We went back and did it in our motorcycle this summer!
That is awesome!
Love your videos! We are weekend rvers. I was puckering just watching the gopro view over the cliffs. If I ever get up there, I will be going the long way!
so glad you enjoy!
Awe, the changing of the Aspen, beautiful 😍 Dont take two many deep breaths at that altitude lol. 🤗
Love the colors!
I love the Million Dollar Highway it is so beautiful, i have taken it about 3 times I was in a SUV not RV unfortunately was in the summer not the fall but still gorgeous, glad you made safe, enjoy and stay safe....
I did it a couple of months ago from Silverton to Ouray in a Ram Promaster cargo van on a very nice day. It wasn't too bad but when I got out of the van at Ouray I honestly thought that my brakes were gone. They were smelling up a storm. I think going the other way is probably better on the nerves. Love that part of the world.
It’s so weird to see the old footage and realize I was watching those at the time you made them! I’ve been following since Hensley was younger than JJ! I feel like y’all are family and I’m watching old family videos! I love y’all!
Aww! Love you too friend!
So beautiful. Great driving Nathan!
Great drive!!!! Loved it!!!
Beautiful drive! Love the video! No wonder you were nervous!
YEAH BUDDY!!! Great job driving that route Nate. And great video Marissa.
Thanks! It was a beautiful ride.
Well my goodness, I just discovered y’all tonight. Wow, what a journey you are all experiencing. Absolutely breathtaking scenery. Thankful I found you guys!
Thank you so much! We have new videos every Sunday.
Nathan, you stress too much. Lol. Going up is much easier than going down. This summer we went the opposite direction you did (from Silverton to Ouray) in our 38' coach. It was a blast! It is one of my favorite passes, especially from the technical aspect. When we got to the real twisty steep section, I just geared down to 1st gear and exhaust brake as needed and enjoyed the ride. I hardly needed to use brakes at all. There is just so much beauty out there. Thank you for the amazing video, it not only brought us back to the places we love, but also made me realize how much I miss out on by having to pay attention to the road while driving.
I LOVE WALKING AROUND THE TOWN OF OURAY... MY BROTHER LIVES IN GRAND JUNCTION
Wow! On our bucketlist! Thanks LJMJ!
Our pleasure, thank you for watching.
I white-knuckled the MDH in my 4Runner several years ago and will NEVER do that with a large RV! Beautiful views but serious blood pressure challenge after Ouray. A lot like Hwy 1 in Cali…views so awesome you stare too long and miss a hairpin turn! Rob.
We just did this road this week in a 26ft class C. Truly beautiful drive in October.
WAY TO GO...
BRAVO TO YOU NATE!!!
YA DID GOOD!!!!
BLESS!!!!!!
We stayed at Haviland State Park outside of Durango for over a week. It was so beautiful! We drove to Silverton on part of that scary road. We enjoyed the pull offs to snap pictures in the canyons. Totality breathtaking 😍
Hi Nathan!! It’s Camille, I enjoy your videos! Keep up the content 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Over the numerous fall season visits I have driven that road numerous times a day but the most challenging was in fog with less than 100 feet visibility and occasionally less than 50 feet. But 18 wheelers drive it daily. One of these years I want to visit during the ice climbing festival.
Traveled this road in snow flurries - wonderful arrival in southern Colorado’s Durango mining country. Sprinter 3500 towing a Ford Flex.
Incredible views, but my heart was racing watching the video! I was nervous for you, Nathan!
Million dollar hwy is such a breathtaking drive! Nathan, you are sooo brave lol..
👏👏👏👏 Very nice LJMJ!!
Thank you 😁
I did the exact drive just in a car - I was white knuckles all the way and when I got out in Silverton I cried from being so scared for so long - on the return back at least you hug the mountain 🏔
Big kahoni's for driving that Hwy!
What a beautiful video. ouray is amazing, it’s so exciting for me that you are here in my Colorado close by! isn’t it wonderful…fall. I wish I was there visiting with you and camping maybe next time, be careful, the weather is changing soon…be safe love you guys so much you’re the best ever.
We drove through there at night, in a Dodge Caravan... white knuckles!! Now i know what the drive looks like in daylight. Beautiful - but my fear of heights would win out. Don't think i would be able to haul our Solitude through there
Cheers to you
Nathan’s knuckles were white for sure! So much fun though.
Our only trip to CO we drove Trail Ridge Road through the Rocky Mountain National Park from Grand Lake to Estes Park and back. Being from Indiana, THAT was knuckle whitening as we transitioned from the timberline to what they called the Alpine Tundra, I believe. Well worth the trip.
SORRY NATHAN! I was commenting to a different channel! I rarely comment to yours,......but ALWAYS watch your adventures. I know you guys are busy, busy and busy. Great camera work by your videographer. Glad to see the truck pulled so well,.....
We always love to read the comments. Especially when they are nice. 😀
Million Dollar Hwy is beautiful ! I didn’t think it was scary at all. Just so pretty!
My fear of heights had me going nope nope nope the whole time. You are brave souls!
I did my first 8 % incline or decline. We are planing on rving to the southwest and large inclines declines have me a nit nervous so i to am going to overcome those fears. Thanks for the inspiration.
Hi y’all - I totally agree. We drove it last year and I don’t want to do it again. Hope you enjoyed the Albuquerque Ballon Fiesta? Looks like you had wonderful weather. Safe travels!! 😊💞🇺🇸
The beauty there is just amazing! Was just there for the first time last week. Your video was like a quick time warp. Keep up the great work you two, or should I say four, do!
Awesome! Thank you!
I have been on the million dollar highway. It is absolutely spectacular. It is on my list to do again but definitely not with our camper.🙃
Your in my FAVORITE state.
One of our favorites as well!
Oh now I have to do it with my rig for sure.
Take a few of the winter months and live in Grand Junction…. Ski Powderhorn daily as well as hiking some great trails near town. After one month of living here I purchased a house near the university…best move ever. Currently I work and rent in NORCAL… but always spend my vacation time back in Grand Junction.
Sounds great!
Good job Nathan👍💕
OMG! I kept finding myself holding my breath!!! I had to keep reminding myself that I’m watching the video you posted so you made it over the Pass!!! LOL
GOD Bless you and your Family.
🙏❤️🙏
Thank you so much.
Welcome!
Great video. Thanks but no thanks to driving on that road
Beautiful!
This trip is on our bucket list ... hopefully next year. Towing a 30' bumper pull.
My favorite youtubers.
AWW! You made my day!
Hauling what you are I DON'T BLAME YOU 1 BIT 😳😳😳🥰As always, Safe Travels guys 💙
Thanks.
You guys are gutsy! Kudos! I have to do breathing exercises just to get through the simplest of mountain roads. 😳. Great video!
Lol… we were in Colorado in September 2018 and OMG… I was like freaking out on that highway towing our fiver.. heading up to Wyoming… I actually took an Ambien to go to sleep.. I have the most dreadful fear of heights. Stay safe and God Bless. 🙏🏻✝️🇺🇸💙
You guys are full of guts! Oh my!!!!
How amazing 🤩
I was holding my breath too lol. Glad it all went well
Colorado is amazing.
im from Colorado originally and have driven a semi over million $ highway. but my it is beautiful!!
Great Video, I so want to head out west from our home of Florida. Next spring!
You should!
Thanks for showing the beautiful scenery on that road, I will never be driving or especially riding that road, to many cliffs, I have a fear of heights.😁
We can say, living in the flat portion of Texas and taking the million dollar hwy in a car..... a Colorado resident gave us the finger. Oh well.😃
Enjoyed your version, stay safe.
Thanks for letting me know which road to avoid. Years ago my adult daughter and I drove through Colorado on our way to California. We wanted to see Dinosaur National Park. We asked the clerk at the hotel which would be the best way to go that wasn't crazy scary. He showed us on the map and assured us the route was flat. Nope. Not only was it not flat it also had those switch back curves and barely enough room for one car to traverse. We had people passing us on this narrow road with a sheer drop off. When we got to a part that we felt more comfortable in (keep in mind I'm from Oklahoma so I'm accustomed to FLAT), we had to stop several times to allow cattle to cross the road. Now, I'm quite familiar with cattle guards just not on a highway.
At time stamp 5:52, that kind of looks like parts of Little Cottonwood Canyon in Utah, going up to Snowbird and Alta Ski Lifts where one can camp or go hiking in the non ski season. Try going up that Canyon in Winter. Done that at lot while at the University of Utah, took a ski class that was held at Alta Spring quarter 1980, way back when full day all area lift tickets were about $5 a day.
Wow !! You two (especially Nathan) look so YOUNG (mere kiddies !) in that "B-roll" footage
from the Manitou Incline visit.
You inspired me (Kelley) to do the incline 3 years ago. Bill wasn't happy you inspired us haha He was happy after we finished.
Haha! So glad! Nathan felt the same.
YOU ARE STRESSING ME OUT!!!
😃
The colors are amazing. Looked fun but a little intense of a drive.
Beautiful
