Hi, Festo engineer here. I've read through the comments and I am here to answer your questions if there are any.
Q: Why do we do this?
A: Because we can ;) But it really is to showcase our technology and to research new principles like energy recovery (kangaroo), lightweight construction (flying fox) to use them in our regular product development.
Q: Where can you buy these?
A: They are pure research projects and not for sale (yet?!). But if you want to see them just write me and we make an appointment :)
Q: Where is the intelligence in these?
A: The title is quite misleading here. The biggest part of them does not have intelligence but just mechanical work. There are, however, some that have intelligence included. For example, the butterflies do autonomous path planning and coordination. We also have ants that solve problems as a group and a bionic hand that learned grasping and manipulation of objects from deep reinforcement learning.
If there are any other questions, just contact me :)

      Hi Jan,
      Dominik

I am extremely interested in robotics and cannot help, but be amazed by the great level of understanding of physics required to develop such robots. I feel great respect for such work. I see the endless possibility and great capacity of change it could have in the world as a whole. Robots are the future. I would love to create robots too, one day, but as of right now my creations remain in my head. This motivates to begin at least working on something small and attainable with my very limited knowledge and understanding. Thank you for sharing.

Perfect for the IRS to deploy as field agents, just send some of these to people's homes if they don't file their taxes properly. These can hide cheeses in hard to find corners or plug/unplug electric appliances to make people think their houses are haunted. (Dear IRS DON'T actually do this, this is just satire.)
