    Great insight into the rough estimates. We budgeted $2000/wk with 2 kids for our 6 month trip as we just had absolutely no idea what to expect. So great to hear more opinions and we weren't to far off the mark.

    Great piece guys, thanks. Very realistic.
    I'm on the road F/T but can work P/T in the Army Reserve (online work) and have my Army pension @ $50K+. I'm not financed with a 2021 Ranger and a 2023 Sunseeker Vision 14' Hybrid; yes, it's a small van, but you can hide inside, but most living is outside. Starlink is expensive but indispensable when working on the road.
    My costs are about $1K p/w for two, including everything. I have three fridges, 110W of car solar (310Ah of Lithiums in the Ranger), 800W of van solar, a Redarc 150W blanket and 2 x 300Ah of Enerdrive Lithiums in the van.
    People can save up and improve their van life, but I decided to future proof everything at the start. Savings bought the Ranger and van, Army pension pays for day to day stuff and my Super is still tucked away. And our house is rented out.
    I think a great money saver is to travel only a few hundred Km per day, more is needed at times, but overall, less Km is a $ saver. I have a 147 litre LRT and a 125 litre sub tank - filling up the sub tank at cheaper places is key. That said, you need a secondary fuel filter and a catch can which reduces the likelihood of expensive maintenance.
    Cheers,
    Stu

    • @suelandolt6840
      @suelandolt6840 Před 11 měsíci +1

      Wow Stu you setup sounds amazing! Yes 14 ft is smaller but absolutely doable and I miss our smaller van for all the tight spots we could get into. 100% best to spend your time outside rather than inside the van. PT work is perfect on the road! Sounds like some good advice there with paying for your setup and not dipping into your super. We are the same and have kept our rental. Working to cover the day to day costs. Also strongly agree that alot of money can be saved by travelling shorte distances. Both feul and maintenance wise! Thanks for sharing and hope you are enjoying your travels as much as well are!

  • @ClissaT
    @ClissaT Před 11 měsíci +2

    Wow great episode. Such an eye opener! I was blown away by the cost of internet etc. I knew the starlink was very exxy. My total current cost is $80mth, that is $70 for internet and $10 for phone. But I will have to go to starlink at $170mth and goodness knows what for phone. It is all soooo much money.
    And by the end I realised that $500k was NOT enough to go travelling and still have some left when you are finished. Because when you are finished or forced to be finished you have to move into a retirement village if you don't have kids to care for you. Because that is what will happen. You get too old to travel and have to go into retirement home. They cost a bloody fortune as well.
    So which to do? Get into a retirement village OR go travelling. Seems like there is only money for one OR the other, not both.
    My current monthly cost on my home and life is around $300 including food, internet, fuel, vehicle, everything. You will say that is BS but I am forced to live on that. I do grow most of my own food which is a huge help that I will miss if I go on the road. There is no choice in the matter. Yes I have now sold my place and I am moving, but I will have to continue to live on that amount otherwise I will end up very soon with nothing. There is no more wiggle room left. So starlink is out for me I think.
    If I ever do get to travel I will do a video on my costs as a miserly single female living on nothing on the road. If my costs look like getting to more than I mentioned here, I will have to stop, stay and wait until next month for some more money to come to me. Or go back to work!
    Life looks like getting VERY grim right when I thought it finally owed me some small pleasure from life. Seems all my life to date has been a process of testing, getting me prepared for this next phase of tightness.

    • @suelandolt6840
      @suelandolt6840 Před 10 měsíci +1

      Oh Clissa, yes it has gotten rally expensive and tougher on a lot of people. I think youvare a superhero living on $300 a month. You must be a great Gardener to grow your own food and yes you would def miss that on the road such a tough decision to make but hope you are happy either way you go! Either lifestyle will bring new people into your life a new community whonapend it with you. Good luck with your decision x

    Some interesting insights. Caravan parks costs are getting ridiculous. What we have noticed after being on the road for 18 months is some of the lower spec caravan parks are trying to charge the same as a caravan park with a few bells and whistles. It’s a bit cheaky.
    There are some trying to be competitive but even though we are members of Gday and Big4 we find them on average to be 15 to 20% more expensive than a privately run park of almost equal calibre.

    As a couple in NZ, we shop at the cheapest supermarket around, and spend around $300/week.
    Sounds a bit cheaper in Australia!!
    Fuel is also better there. Average fuel prices are about $1.80/L, but, we also have to pay 7.9c/km in road user charges!

      Hey guys thanks so much. If you drive down to the bottom of Ingram Street just outside of exmouth past the fuel station on you left and past Exmouth Civil, the last block on the left hand side has a board up woth "lamd use availavle" and a mobile number. They let you park up there. Not sure what they are charging.

    That was really interesting. Thank you very much. My thoughts are your insurance is enormous, the food budget seems spot on, the fuel etc looks OK and the caravan parks charges are ridiculous. My problem is I am a smoker and a drinker so I think I am looking at $2000 a week. I think I am going to have to give up to afford the grey nomad lifestyle.
    P.S. You are not fooling anyone with the towel. The clock is still crooked. I see in the comments already posted that people are asking why is there a towel on the wall. You can't win😁😁😁😁😂😂😂😂

      Thanks so much Brett, so sorry to hear about your dog. They are part of the family! Absolutely able to do it cheaper. Can travel slower, less fuel, can prepay phones and don't need Starlink. Our insurances are really expensive due to the setup we travel in. A simpler set up would still get us around at less cost. Appreciate your feedback and 15 years is an incredible amount of time to be on the road you would have pretty much seen it all in the time. Safe travels and thanks for sharing.

    I have been wearing Archie thongs for years. I have two pairs that I alternate (the plugger is fixed so no mishaps there) I wore them 15 hours a day, 7 days a week as I couldn't wear shoes because of my back, when we owned our shop and still are wearing the same two pairs. The only thing I don't like about them is that if they get wet your foot gets a bit slippery in them.

    How are you guys generating income to finance your weekly expenses on the road? Aware you house is rented out (smart move) which i assume is covering your mortgage if you have one.
    I see a lot of young people on YT who are on the road full time (many with a young family) and wonder just how they do it without having fulltime/or even part time jobs to cover say an average of $60k to $80k pa expenses.
    I don't believe having a youtube channel (most on the road fulltime do) would generate much income unless your a celebrity.
    Selling the family home to fund a van & 4wd and hit the road especially with a young family, which is becoming more common these days does not sound like a wise choice to me - placing yourself out of the real estate market with the bleak possibility of never affording to get back in when the travel venture comes to an end.
    We worked hard to pay our mortgage off (with 5 kids now all working) and in that time the market value of our house more than trebled (now worth aprox $1.5m). We own our 4WD & Caravan with no debt and do lots of trips away but not fulltime on the road as i like my space and my mancave workshop with a hoist.
    Have explored most of Aust but in many different trips at different times vs fulltime travelling, but you guys seem to be having a blast as much easier than having kids on the road in a confined space- enjoy

      Thanks for the question. CZcams all depends on the number of views you get so we can't rely on it as it is not a foxed amount an always changing. My salary pays all our expenses. The rental property used to co er itself but doesn't anymore sadly die to all the rate increases so we are now paying in to cover the difference.
