The Cowsills were a very gifted family. Unfortunately they had a very abusive father who ruined everything. If you want to know about them, Amazon Prime has their documentary, Family Band, The Cowsill Story. Barry died in the aftermath of Katrina, and Bill passed from multiple illness shortly after. Bob, Paul, and Susan still perform regularly, and came out with a new album last year - and they still sound amazing. Youngest brother John played with The Beach Boys touring band for 22 years, and plays with his siblings whenever he can.
This performance was from a TV special titled The Wonderful World of Pizazz, created by Carl Reiner, not the Smothers Brothers. They recorded the song, then created the video. Carl wanted them because it was the opposite of their public persona, the squeaky clean family. Hope this helps!

COWSILLS, " HAIR ". this was great anti-war play, tuned into a movie several years later. Starring John Savage, the recently deceased Treat Williams, a young Beverly DeAngelo. Vietnam War was the back story. Some hit song's were from it. With some some very underated singers within the cast. A movie worth your time 🎵✌🎶.

I was 12 when this came out. I haven't heard this in over 50 years, yet I sang along like it was last week. Good to know I haven't killed off too many brain cells.

Soundtrack of the musical is brilliant, one of the great hippi musicals from the sixties.

Check out their first hit 'The rain, park and other things' - my favorite, although it may be too bubblegum for some. This song and The rain... were their only real hits. The father of the family may have gotten them contracts, but he was very abusive. Which is sad, because these kids had, (have) so much talent and optimism. A few have passed, but the rest still perform!

Great song! The Cowsills are amazing singers and still deliver fabulous harmonies. Susan Cowsill, who was just a little kid in the '60s, is a great singer and songwriter who was in a terrific alt-country band in the 1990s and early 2000s called the Continental Drifters. The late Bill and Barry Cowsill also did some fine solo work. The Cowsills (Bob, Paul and Susan) just recently released a strong new album called Rhythm of the World.

I had Partridge Family LP"s as a child.
Mom took me to Hair Live on stage when I was 9.

We had Smothers Brothers LP"s also.
I think the play had military, anti- war message. The actors all stood on a low lighted stage naked. A message of freedom and defiance.

This song was banned on many radio stations because of the verse starting, "Oh Say can you see".... It was considered to be making fun of a patriotic song.

"Hair" was a very controversial stage play with a strong anti-Vietnam War message. In the '60s, wearing long hair was a political statement for young men, and many in the older generation hated it viscerally. The play was one of the first to include nude scenes and it caused a major stir.

This was a musical performance from a Carl Reiner comedy special. Carl suggested that this very strait laced looking bunch of kids who were musical prodigies should cover this song from a popular hippie musical. So these young musicians put together this song and got wigs to put together this performance. The musical Hair is more religious and serious. The Cowsill boys went into a studio and played and sang this whole thing doing I think a much better version of this song that they had little to know knowledge of. Then lip synced it for the cameras and did a sort of Beatles style silliness for the show. It was never meant to be played on the radio. The cowsill older boys got the track and took it to the local radio stations and eventually got them to play it. It was a sensation. No one could believe these strait laced kids could do something like it cuz all their other music was controlled by their father and the record companies and was mostly bubble gum junk. Only their one other hit The Rain, The Park and Other Things was worth listening to. But every last one of them were musical prodigies whose music careers was destroyed by their abusive alcoholic father. But they still perform to this day, the siblings who are still alive. And they are still brilliant musicians.

The nude scene is at the end of the song “Where Do I Go?” Participation is optional. Some cast members shed their clothes as the lights dim. It’s not suggestive.

Long hair was open rebellion, a bold political and social statement. Kinda like drag has become in the last year. Men with hair like yours got hassled in public openly, fored from jobs...its hard to explain.
