  • Simcity 2013 is considered the most disastrous game launch in history. But how did we reach here? Isn't the game's designer Will Wright one of the most celebrated game designers? And the EA that came as a savior of Simcity, was the reason for its decline. In this video, we will talk about the complete rise and fall of Simcity. We will talk about the story of Simcity 2000, Simcity 3000 and the infamous Simcity 2013.
In the early '80s, game designer Will Wright embarked on a mission to create a groundbreaking city-building game. SimCity, initially developed solo, emerged as a unique and engaging experience that captured the imagination of gamers.
SimCity's rise to stardom was unexpected but well-deserved. Word-of-mouth and media attention propelled it into the limelight, solidifying its status as a gaming icon.
Corporate transitions and financial challenges at Maxis, SimCity's home, marked a turning point. Electronic Arts (EA) stepped in as a savior, breathing new life into the franchise. SimCity evolved and continued to captivate gamers with titles like SimCity 3000 and SimCity 4.
SimCity 4, released in 2003, represented a golden era for the franchise. With its 3D graphics and isometric view, it introduced innovative gameplay elements that thrilled fans.
However, as Maxis shifted focus to other projects, SimCity faced challenges. SimCity Societies, a departure from the series' core mechanics, left fans yearning for the SimCity of old.
The much-anticipated SimCity 2013 launch turned into a disaster due to server issues, an always-online requirement, and gameplay flaws. Disappointed players wondered what went wrong.
Despite its turbulent history, SimCity's legacy endures. It left an indelible mark on the gaming industry, influencing city-building and simulation games.
Whether you're a SimCity enthusiast or curious about gaming history, our video offers a must-watch exploration of this iconic franchise. Subscribe to The Game Explainers for more insightful gaming history essays. Thanks for joining us on this gaming odyssey!

Sim city 3000 is still my favourite... Maxis made some good games but EA do a pretty good job of killing successful franchises

I've watched a couple of videos on this topic over the years, and yet you mentioned stuff I had never heard. And I'm sad this franchise died (as I think it is still better than Cities Skylines).

I lost interest after SC3K, forcing people to have a persistent Internet connection to shabby servers.

Still much prefer this game's approach to city management and simulation compared to Cities Skylines. I think SimCity makes you feel more involved with your cities, and your decisions have an impact on them. Not to mention SimCity 2013's art style and sound design are absolutely brilliant, you can't help but stare at your cities and just watch them flow... Cities Skylines is a great city painter but not so much a good simulator in my opinion, as it relies almost completely on traffic management. CS 2 is looking a lot more promising however, can't wait to try it.
