    @asayle3r5 Thanks for the comment. I use both applications.When I use the stab-in I will tighten the unused screws. A lot of installers think it's a waste of time but it is just a preference of mine. It really only takes a second to screw them in.

    I wish I found your video sooner! I needed to replace a Leviton Decora rocker switch expecting to find the wires wrapped around the screws. Instead, the wires attached using the push-in/quick wire method. I took an educated guess as to which of the 2 black wires were pushed into the common slot, but I wanted to be 100% sure. So, I had to stop and do more research to find some kind of installation manual or video that would clarify which hole/slot the common went into. It really would've taken a lot of time since there was only the brand of the switch and no model number. I found my answer from The Circuit Detective's video who had a similar model, but your video matched my switch exactly. If I would've just waited to until his video finished and yours started, I would've saved even more time by being 100% sure of my wires. Thank you for your video, though. It will really come in handy for other DIYers. Also, is it better in the long run to wrap the wires around the screws instead of the push-in/quick wire method?

    @TheShnuz Thats good to hear! Sometimes it is better to let a pro do it. Take a couple snap shots if you have time.

    The sigle pole dimmer I had would not dim a low as I wanted it to for the family room. I found that the 3-pole dimmer I had bought (for CFL bulb) were adjustable so you could set the lowest point on the dimmer to be just about off. (Like movie thearter lights.) I was not able to find an CFL (adjustable) switch in a single pole. ..anyway I was able to get the 3-pole to work..

    @ibeleaf I am curious to know why there aren't ground screws on the switches. Anyone have some insight on this?

    We don't have to bond switches in Canada it is optional. We just have to bond to the box then to the light box and fixture. The boxes here are either metal or plastic that have grounding screws on a metal plate that goes to the front of the box. So the metal switch is bonded to the box. I guess the CEC figured bonding the switch is good enough maybe because unlike a plug devices are not being connected.

    Yep you can wire a three way as a single pole but it really is better to replace the switch with a single pole/common and either one of the brass screws.You'll have to check for witch way is up.

    @sparkyUonline I would prefer that switches were ungrounded . It is much safer to change them live when they are ungrounded . That being said grounding is required here so I use grounded switches .

    I'm just a homeowner, but I've always wondered this: Do you prefer to use the "stab-in" connection, or the screws? Is one better electrically? Are there any rules or best practices for mixing the connection style on one device? If you're not using the screws, is it good practice to screw them all the way in, or is it ok to leave them extended? (I find outlets in my house that have the screws hanging out in space with nothing connected, and I don't like it) Thanks for the video, and good work!

  • @WJCTechyman

    Different electrical codes, CEC by Canadian Standards Association as well as provincial codes, I guess. I'm not an electrician, but am familiar with electrical basics and troubleshooting, maybe our codes require all switch and electrical boxes to be metallic for indoors, and probably the weather resistant boxes to have grounding brackets that connect to the mounting hardware of switches. Outlets are grounded still, of course, but it may also depend on the setup i.e. commercial vs. residential.

    im a 1st year apprentice and i've done a whole condo tower of switches and plugs and some rough in by now, the switches we use are leviton, they don't have a ground screw we just ground every box, all the plugs have grounds, just the switches don't. (canada)

    ah i didn't see this or i would've asked my foreman today, i'll let you know tomorrow!
    my guess is that canadian code doesn't require a ground on switches, and we use metal boxes that we always ground, if it's plastic it has a ground tab with a screw in the back

    Whats the difference between a commercial 1-way and a standard 1 way other than one is about $6 and the other less than $1?

    • @electricalindustry
      @electricalindustry  Před 9 lety +2

      These 1-way switches are called a single pole switch.
      Quality and features are the difference in the pricing. They both could be rated at 15 amps but the dollar switch is going to be built with minimum ul standards whereas the $6 switch will exceed those standards.
      Some of the features are the type of connection for the wires,better housing,self grounding yoke and all around construction of the switch.

    You were very misleading about single-pole switches. You said that one screw was line and the other was load, and you pointed to those screws. You can use either one for line and load, but obviously not on the same screw

    • @electricalindustry
      @electricalindustry  Před 8 lety +2

      I feel using the phrase line and load is good practice when explaining wiring devices. It is second nature to me because we as electricians deal with and talk about line and load all the time.
      You are correct in that it does not matter on a single pole switch.

    • @JamesWalton1999
      @JamesWalton1999 Před 8 lety

      Not what I was saying. You pointed to a specific screw for line and a specific screw for load. People might be trying to figure out which one to do and they'll be confused because it does not matter which screw you put the line on or the load on.
