  • Lone Survivor (2013)
In 2005 Afghanistan, Navy SEALs Marcus Luttrell (Mark Wahlberg), Michael Murphy (Taylor Kitsch), Danny Dietz (Emile Hirsch) and Matthew "Axe" Axelson (Ben Foster) deploy on a mission of surveillance and to take out Taliban leader Ahmad Shah. Though spotted by goatherds, Luttrell and his team decide not to kill them. But one of the Afghans alerts a group of Taliban fighters to the invaders, and a terrible battle ensues, in which the SEALs find themselves hopelessly outnumbered and outgunned.

There is A LOT we could and should learn from some other cultures out there, or in our society maybe practice our existing values more than we do (as a whole, not meaning individually, although that too)
The Afghan practice of bringing someone in as a guest, and as such they will be tended to, fed, and protected if need be...
This village was committed to honouring this tradition, even in the face of death & violence. Willing to stand up for a stranger in the face of a brutal regime that wasn't going anywhere anytime soon...
I think we should take a moment and really let that sink in.

This will be a long post so I'll get it all out at once. We live in Canada with an under funded military and a pathetic navy. Our vets get awful after service treatment with a high suicide rate. What's worse is that most Canadians have no sense of history regarding anything military. We were there with you in WWI, WWII, Korea, Bosnia and Afghanistan. At least 30,000 Canadians volunteered to serve in Vietnam. Most of Holland was liberated by Canadians but my parents were liberated by US troops so I know what I'm thankful for. As for Heroes someone behind the lines who gets fragged in the ass is NOT a hero, it has to stop somewhere. Same with the 6:00 o'clock news when mommy comes home from the Coast Guard after six months to surprise her family at the little league game. I know the Coast Guard can be dangerous stuff but six months in shallow water doesn't make you a SEAL. I've never served, heart problems, so I won't pretend to be something I'm not but I'm too familiar with loss and suicide. I'll just say this once and I mean it, Thank you for everything.

Luttrell is saved at the last minute by the local villagers, who fire off their AK-47s to threaten the attackers.
None of this happened. In the book, members of the Taliban enter Luttrell’s room and begin beating him. (“I didn’t give that much of a shit,” Luttrell writes. “I can suck this kind of crap up, like I’ve been trained. As a combat veteran myself your absolute right! No matter what the situation is we will never leave a brother behind! Or not be willing to die for the sake of him or her! Trust me not just myself but other people really really suffer from survivors guilt everyday because we made it home and our fallen brothers and sisters didn't. So many times I have bad dreams about what could have been done or anything that could have saved their lives and I struggle every single day with that. That's why it really really bothers me when people don't stand for the national anthem. Now I do respect anyone's decision to not stand because it's a free country however if the average person only knew the blood and sacrifice that was laid down for our flag then they would have a different view of it. But that's why I myself fought and all my brothers and sisters in arms fought, so we can live in a free country and be able to express our feelings. People ask me was it worth it? Absolutely it was worth it! Because we all have the same goal and that's to eliminate anyone who is a threat to our country and that's why we take an oath to protect this country from foreign and domestic terrorists or anyone who wants to hurt us and our citizens! Yes we made a choice to do it and it's OUR JOB to do that! That's why when someone says thank you for your service we say thank you for your support because it means alot to us veterans knowing that people appreciate what we do for them to keep everyone safe and be able to live freely. 🇺🇲❤️💪

The whole mission was a cluster. Once the team encountered the local they should have taken prisoner back to extraction, let them go and abort mission. Mission was relatively low value intel gathering. Also B team was not available by air in the beginning because of availability of aircraft. New information reveals there were mistakes made at planning/ command levels too. Unnecessary loss of life.

It's really a shame all the creative license they took with the original story. So much was changed and dramatized; the final battle never took place at all. The real story was compelling enough to stand on it's own. This Hollywoodized rendition would probably have been better a seperate fictional story.

Sad to know the truth of how Afghanistan turned out in the end. The U.S. left behind our partner forces in Afghanistan to be hunted down by the Taliban who took over. Many are still on the run, many we killed. Few escaped with the help of a few good men. Not only that, but we left behind billions of dollars in equipment and ammunition to be used by the Taliban.
