  • No one gets off the beaten path, literally and metaphorically, more than Matt and his crew from Matt’s Off Road Recovery! Matt and his team run a very popular CZcams channel that shows them recovering vehicles who get stuck off roading. Matt and his team were nice enough to let us come on an off-road excursion with them in St George, Utah, the scene for some of John Wayne’s films.
Ethan and Matt discuss how Matt got into the business of off-road recovery after years of owning his own roofing business and then how his off road recovery business turned into a very successful CZcams channel. Matt and his crew share so many of the same core values as John Wayne, including self-reliance, family, and adventure.
You can listen and watch the full interview with Matt on Apple Podcasts and Spotify but if you want to see the off road adventure they took us on, head to our CZcams channel for some exclusive Behind the Scenes footage!

Lizzy is thinking, "of course I change my own tires...I want it done right"😁 I grew up on a farm and was always my Dad's "helper" going to get tools and holding the flashlight for him. In 1986, at age 16 I got my first car and I asked my Dad to show me how to change a tire on it step by step. Not long after a friend was with me in town, sure enough I got a flat tire. I pulled into a parking lot adjacent to a busy fast food place. This was on the main street through town, and a gas station was being renovated behind with about 15 workmen on site. I could have called my Dad or grandpa, but I told my friend we were going to change it. Two 16 yr old, 110lb girls, took both of us to lift the spare out of the trunk. I had to stand on the lug wrench to get the lug nuts loose, before I jacked up the car, just like Dad showed me. Not one single "prince" showed up to save us....until I was done. A grandpa, probably 80 yrs old came out of the restaraunt and said his grandson noticed what i was doing, and he apoligized for not coming out sooner. I asked if he could check my work and he passed us with flying colors!

      Good job.
I taught both my kids to change tires on my 3/4 ton truck before they had there license.
They then were forced to help me do many things practical.
They now have the confidence to start a fix but still know to call me when they get stuck before getting further into trouble.
Yer dad is proud of you. Like I am my little girl.

I think the appeal of Matts Offroad Recovery channel is the fact that Matt and his crew all come off as very down to earth they laugh and have fun in what they are doing and show kindness to everyone and seem to treat everyone the same and genuinely just want to do their job and help people. It is the same thing when I read about your dad he showed respect to everyone that was respectful to him and treated everyone fairly and with kindness. They show the same values that I read about that your dad had and I think those values will give you universal appeal to everyone why the channel is popular.

I admire him for making sure that he always makes everyone else's contribution an important part of their mission of the day. I really like how he has linked his videos with other CZcamsrs in his social circle. He has a unique ability to make the viewer feel like they are part of his family and friends on their adventures. He provides a service that literally saves lives and I think most viewers don't realize the amount of time he spends working hard to provide 2 short videos a week. well, you were EXACTLY right on one thing.. you said you'd take offroad sketchy stuff over freeway work ANY day-- SO WOULD I. I was tow driver in LA area-- got mashed between two trucks.. I was hooking up a Ford Excursion (armored) to my tow truck-(16 ton) and an old lady in one of the land yacht cadillacs from the 50s.. BIG heavy thing-- hit that excursion in back- knocked it into me- and pushed me and my truck forward.. SCOOTED my 16 ton truck through the gravel in the runaway truck area AND the Excursion behind and ME in the middle.. That was 99 and I"m STILL not over it.. deal with constant pain EVERY DAY.. can't do shit.. any more.. sorry- but that's the truth..

I watch all Matts off road recovey vlogs. Great show. I wanted to tell you a story about me towing you home on a surf board one windy day in Newport Harbor. I was 17 in 1974. It was an overcast day the wind was a steady 18+mph.I was on my Hobie 14 ripping around the harbor when I saw a kid on a large surf board struggling in the wind. I came up close and asked him if he needed some help. He said yes and asked me to to give him a tow to John Wayne's house that he was his son. I told him sure and threw him a line and towed him home. He said thanks and i sailed away. End of story. Don't know if you recall this. just something I always remembered sailing in Newport.

I also remember seeing him on TV for an awards show and was shocked but amazed by his strength to walkout on stage, then was saddened when your father passed sometime later. John Wayne imo is what every boy should aspire to.. "Carry your weight boy" (The Cowboys). Men and women of that era were the Greatest Generation.. Sad to see them go.

Great topics of discussion. One by Ethan; the ability to adjust to extemporaneous situations~ It's called yankee ingenuity... to coin a very old term! No one ever seems to do it better than us Americans! That very ability seems to set us aside from many others. That character trait is very attractive to others too! It is definitely one of the reasons Matt and his crew have become so welcomed into all our lives!~
Matt expressed some apprehension about how these things will effect his children (and others)... I can sense that Paul (Fab Rats) also shares that concern, perhaps you two have even spoke about it!?! As an older guy (pushin' 60) I can offer this understanding. Y'all need to just have a sit down with your significant others (kids, fam, w/e) and explain that its important that they understand that it is what it is... just sharing real life experiences with others. Your crews have developed a keen sense of that and, are welcoming to just being themselves! I think that's the key... don't try to be something you're not! And don't get inflated in self importance... the only difference between you and anyone watching your content is that they can see you and you cant see them! We are all doing relatively the same silly things (just with different timing!)... same mistakes and same achievements. Also... for those that may be short or critical about whatever... understand that they just have a different experience (or lack thereof)... never take it personal! Try ... try ... try to never make it personal.
One of the greatest character traits we Americans have is the ability to agree to disagree! Sometimes it seems as tho we forget that but, always try to remember.~ R/

Your dad's blonde saddle that he had custom made for him at Knott's Saddle Shop in Anaheim California was made by my mother's brother. If you still have that saddle around you'll see a tag on the saddle that reads Knots Saddle Shop Fullerton California. John Wayne is written on the back of the saddle. I know that because I was in my uncle's saddle shop when he was carving the name June of 1967. The saddle was also made to fit that that white or gray horse your dad had and rode in many of The Westerns. My uncle was the man that blew taps over the 700 man grave on Atu Island during World War II the first American soil we took back from Japan during the war. He was the youngest person to reach the rank of Sergeant Major in the history of the United States Army Forest Knott. If I remember correctly my uncle said it took him 6 years to make that saddle for your dad; because of the availability of leather and he had to make the saddle tree fit the horse and your dad's butt. I've been subscribed to Matt's channel when he had 50,000 subscribers.

@@benkanobe7500 back in there '60s the oldest of folks that own Knott's Berry Farm Amusement Center. Came to my uncle's shop and wanted to know how much it was going to cost to have a saddle made for I think it was six members of his grandchildren. Been a few years since I heard this story. No I don't know if my uncle actually made saddles for those six members of that family. Now he got to talk about the individual histories of my family on my mother's side and their family and it was decided that my great-grandfather and his grandfather were brothers.
Now most folks know that Ronald Reagan was a avid horseman he preferred to ride using an English saddle but the only western saddle that he owned had the same tag on it as my uncle was the man that made that saddle.
American opera singer actor Ezio Pinza who performed in the Broadway stage production of South Pacific and other Broadway plays, commissioned my uncle to make his daughter's saddle.
Ernest Hemingway commissioned my uncle to make both of his granddaughters saddles and one of those young ladies is a Hollywood actress and I believe producer herself, she turned out to be quite a horse woman.
My favorite story my uncle told was when Jerry Brown's father was Governor He and his California Highway patrol police Sergeant bodyguard came to my uncle Saddle Shop. Said he wanted my uncle to make him a saddle. My uncle didn't care for the quote unquote "Horses Ass Governor", of California. He said to Governor Brown: I don't like you; I don't like your politics; I will never make you a saddle; now you get the hell out of my shop and take that police Sergeant bodyguard of yours with you. Well the California Highway patrol Sgt. says you can't talk to the governor that way! My uncle said "I can talk to him any damn way please I please to and if you don't like it I'll have your ass fired for trying to intimidate me!" Both of you get out of my shop. Failure to do so I'll have both of you criminally charged for trespassing. Most of the saddles ranged between $5,000 to $15,000 to make each. The cheapest saddle my uncle ever made was for my brother, paid him $750 for it.

I watched a video days ago with Ethan, showing & talking about his dad, from the John Wayne museum. Then watching this video with you & Ethan together...so cool 😎. Both down to earth guys. One thing that John Wayne & I have in common... our 1st name. Do you know what it was? I go by my middle name, since my 5th grade teacher could not say it right. Waiting for the Nugget & the big wrecker to be finished. You should have a contest of naming - the wrecker.

I have to say. I have learned a lot watching you guys. O drove past and off ramp and noticed the driver took it to fast not knowing the area and the ramp was on a hill the ramp was the top ofvtge hill he was sitting just at the point if e opened the door I believe he would rolled it qnd nit stopped till the bottom. I thought for a minute about how would you guys handle this I was with my buddy in his truck we pulled down the road just after the ramp and walked over told him stay in the car we would help I stood in the ro with flash light and my friends yellow rain jacket to slow people down and guide my friend to back into the situation put a chains on the passenger axle told the driver turning wheel hard to the right don't touch your breaks leave the running in nutral we needed light it was around midnight as O stood stopped a couple cars coming to ramp they had blo.kers my buddy hit it pulled the guys cars out of this scary situation have to say I probably would not have had the mind set to help thus guy would have felt bad but Drive off. Watching the many episodes of your show and the variety of technics, if I went from the front instead of the back the angle he was at already he had a little dirt pulled up he would have rolled the car and no telling what would happen it's was 60 to 70 feet at a steep angle he cold roll twice at least probably very injured the guy was so scared he would not get of the car. So weather you know or not my experience gained from watching gave me the concious mind looked at the options felt I could solve enough of the problems with incoming traffic and having to basically drive backwards to get the truck in the right place abrain jacket qnbr8ghy asw flashlight got 2 cars to stop so we could do this had them put their blinkers on to help safety. 2 minutes after we got him back on the road and safe and sound thebtow truck he called shows he sat their an hour when I showed up. But because you guys are professionals I am detailed guy in everything so some how looked at the options and asked myself what would Matt do it became obvious this was a guy probably almost 70 he sat their am hour I showed close to midnight this isna sharp curve actually sorry its an on ramp to the 67 south in Lakeaide CA did a good deed saved the guy some money I think the fact he had kind of slide into that position and a small pile.of dirt plowed with his front tire probably saved the day we just pulled him put of it it occurred to me he had turn the wheel the same direction he drove into this to get him out seemed logical ok maybe that would have turned out either way but the process in my head never done anything like that ever before my friend qithbthe truck I was going through the process in mybhead with him as we walked up on the gentlemen he looks at me and said I would have thought that threw I would pull ahead of thebguy throw the chain around the front axle then I said he would likely roll and would F everything up. Your show does way more then entertain guys Cheers to you all just wanted to something because of John Wayne when is that boy gonna paint the that yellow things for Ed it's like q.month now. Na just busting they git a good channel going to see the kids got heart that's a big things for me. I am looking forward to seeing Ed's rig finished that was some episode getting that thing out of the "rain forest" that was intense O got heart for Ed he reminded me of my pops. I just turned 62 this month so taking a leap to help that gentlemen out in my head I said I got this its all because you guys are giving the rest of experience to and the courage to help others. Maybe should have waited for the tower took us 15 minutes sobthqtbtow truck took at least an hour and 15 minutes the gut 2as getting upset when I asked the gentlemen if wanted us to help qnd just stay with him till the tow came he said no get me out of here the tow truck ain't coming granted I knew the place very well a friend worked thrreits less then 5 minutes but they cover like a 20 mile radio's with 4 major highways that all intersect very closely the 8 67 125 and 52 there isn't many exits to get turned around if he was another call fixing a tire or what ever I understood it could have taken longer if it was an accident tow situation at the far end away from our location with police reports possible ambulances etc.. thanks Matt and crew

I am a dumb ass that comment is on your channel I love your pops I still got a very and like 20 of his videos probably gonna copy them to a hard drive my back ground is IT/computer etc.. the tapes are a bit worn I probably sell them as a bundle at the swap meet with the rest of my very tapes I fit some brand new in opened, The Loneaome Dove set O ain't trying to get rich I would pass them on I've chagrined them and feel I am a care taken of these things I grew up watching your pops I know he was truly a man's man I think I learned If I may. Real men help real men. Don't get over on each other they don't cheat each other if anything it's fair and balanced that what I would have to say the biggest impression your father left on this kid from Colorado. God Bless brother

I watched 10 minutes of this and turned the channel! I have never heard of Ethan Wayne , but we watch Matt all the time and I welcomed the chance to learn more about him. Someone needs to tell Ethan Wayne when he purports to interview someone, it should be about the someone, not HIM. He would ask Matt a question, Matt would start to answer, or give a short answer and Ethan Wayne would then launch into a 10 minute blather about HIMSELF. Mr. Wayne is very unclear on the concept of interviewing someone, and I’m incredibly underwhelmed.
