Challah Recipe:
5lbs high gluton flour
3 tbs dry yeast or 2 oz fresh yeast
1/2 - 3/4 c. sugar
5 cups warm water
3 eggs
a little more than 1/2 c oil
2 tbs. salt
Pour yeast, sugar and 2C. water into bowl, wait 5-10 min. till foams.
Add 6 C flour and beat till forms paste, than add eggs, 1/ C of.oil, and salt, continue beating and add flour one at a time ,alternate with rest of water and knead for 10-12 min. Add the rest of the oil(approx. 2 Tbs of oil and continue kneading one more minute . Let rise in either bowl with wet towel or in a plastic bag for approx. 45 min -1 hr.
Take challa, braid and let rise for another 45 min. - 1 hr, brush with egg and bake at 350º for 1 hr.
It was very hard to film this video. It was the last thing that I wanted to do. So many of you encouraged me to film this so that you may participate in this time of prayer for everyone suffering. Making challah for me is very therapeutic. It’s me, opening my heart to Gd. All of your messages have touched me so much. Thank you 💕.

Hi Sonya, I am from a muslim father and a christian mother, grew up in France. Young kids from my generation (I am 48) were getting along just fine, whatever backgrounds or religious heritage we had.
My mother would let me for a couple of hours at a neighbour who was a sepharade Jew from Algeria. Your videos are reminiscing that time as she was preparing shabat while taking care of me.
The arab kids would never have a single antisemitic thought at that time, and our parents would never allow us to do so.
Now, a whole youth is bathing in a whole tank of hatred for Jews. I believe the two people can coexist, because we did. What happened ? This is era is paradoxical, in its try to fight hatred, but opening the door of resentment that leads to other kind of hatred.
I feel horrified to what happened in Israel, all I can do is to express my empathy, and pray for the healing of those who survived yet who will have to go through a heavy mourning. Take care Sonya, and keep on what you do, sharing, and showing that your own beliefs are nothing but Peace.
Such a beautiful message, please know that Jews have no hatred for Muslims, have no interest in anything but peace and coexistence. All of my Israeli friends > 50 years old remember their youths with Arab neighbors who they loved, who took care of them and were in each other's homes. Thank you for positive words and memories.

I did not know that baking and praying is what most Jewish women do in times of distress… I said to my husband the other day, doing a lot of baking at the moment, that I have been using all that time putting together the dough, stretching and folding, shaping - to pray for Israel and the entire situation. Sonya, this was the first video in a week to uplift me and take me out of the depths of worry and fear, which becomes very unproductive. Thank you, it is beautiful and completely appropriate. My rabbi said we are still allowed to go on with our lives and even celebrate special occasions in a modest way, while we pray for Am Yisrael Chai. You are doing a huge mitzvah here, showing Jewish women how they can pray as they make challah (of course welcoming all faiths, and men or women, to bake!). It's so nice to see how you manage to do so much, with a smile and humor always - I know if you're doing this after the kids are asleep that you are baking well into the night yet ready to take care of everyone's children at school as a nurse by the next morning! Your videos are so enjoyable, it's great how you show how efficient you are in making so many things at once (with koach!), I am the same. I love the Beis Yaakov cookbook as well - try the lemon biscotti ; ) I use the fabulous Kosher By Design cookbooks too. Sending ahava and brachot, Hazak!

Hello Sonya, I can't imagine the pain you must be feeling of what is happening in Israel. It's devastating, and horrible to see what hate can do! My church had 18 of our members trapped including our Episcopal priest and his wife was in Israel on a pilgrimage, they were only there a few days in, when the massacre, and fighting began. They where in Tel Aviv at the time. Luckily the tour group gathered them up and moved them north away from the fighting till they could get flights out, they were all finally able to fly out. Father Thack, and his wife was the last to fly out just as the airport was getting bombed. Although they are now safe, they are physically and mentally drained, and devastated to leave the people of Israel, and those that protected them behind to the unknown. Our church has done this yearly since 2010, and some had become friends with the owners of the tour company. I have the utmost respect for them to make sure our people were safe, instead of being with their families. My heart truly aches for Israel and its people! I pray for its people, and the pain they have endured, and will endure! I truly wish there was something I could say to make you feel better.....I will pray you find peace! Have a blessed day!

I have very dear friends who live in and near Tel Aviv. Because of my stress and worry for my dear friends and all of Israel I have had trouble focussing on filming and editing my own videos. I'm Native American and we have lived under colonization for 500 years. You are here as a colonizer living on Native tribes lands that were stolen. Israel has done the same to Palestine. What the Israeli govt is doing is breaking the rules of the Geneva Convention. A Muslim boy has been murdered by his landlord in Chicago because of all the lies being told and the rise in Islamophobia. Everyone who tells lies about the situation and takes the side of the Israeli govt attempting genocide has blood on their hands to the 4th generation. That's a curse. Understand.
Just because some people in Israel, and their government, made terrible choices does not mean all Israelites agree. Just like not all Americans agree with how Native Americans were treated.
Instead of pointing fingers we can pray, love those right beside us, encourage others next to use in their walk of faith and know that God offers us peace.
