  • It's funny how people can always tell when a Pokemon Design isn't official. In this video, I discuss the different components of the style used by the artist who designs Pokemon, and how to replicated that style in your own artwork.

Primal Dialga is actually a mistranslation. Or rather, it was just what they decided to translate it as (probably pecause it sounds cool and fits) because at the time it came out Primal Reversion wasn't a thing. Then Primal appeared a few years later and everyone got confused. In the japanese versions it's simply called Dark Dialga.

Another common thing from Sugimori is that he uses hidden textures inside the Pokémon, and one interesting one at that is Charizard. If you zoom into its wings, it has leaf texture brushes. Sort of like a faint stain, but this varies A LOT on all Pokémon drawn by him (characters and everything he has done too.) Some are just ink splatters, others are dry brush lines, etc.

I feel like having no eyes, a blank face plays into the space theme. It does not give you any expressions, it is the very essence of existence before anything existed. Take a look at warframes for example. Most of them don't have any eyes and even when they do, they are imitations and not their functioning eyes. It gives off a blank, cold vibe you can associate with space and time before existence.

Would be cool to see more on the linework and, I guess, being able to draw your base lines in something that approximates the iconic Sugimori style. You’ve clearly drawn Pokémon for quite a while and definitely have a sense for it!! I’ve never tried to draw in this style, though, and I’m not really sure where to start. Did you just study the style for a long time, or do you have a technique for learning/replicating a new style? I’m real curious, because this is awesome and I’d love to drop my tendency towards realism and broaden my horizons by attempting to draw Pokémon and Pokémon franchise characters in a more Suigimori-esque manner sometime.
Personally, I draw traditionally, but in terms of base lines, shapes, and just style breakdowns, even seeing that kind of thing done digitally can help! ^_^

from my view, the body is really good, but a bit too "solid" for a manifestation of "nothing". i think that maybe some mist would probably solve this (kinda like gastly's mist)
the neck seems to me too low, as if it standing while uncomfortably bowing his head, like a dog that is lowering his neck to avoid being petted when it doesn't want to. i would make the neck a bit thinner in the intersection with the body, and lifting the head up.
overall this is a very good idea
