- Last week we put up our first impressions review article and video of the new 2019 Honda Talon 1000R and 1000X - the first ever Sport UTV from Honda. It seems that the off-road world is excited about Honda’s newest machine, but some people wanted to see the Talon in action and hear the engine scream - rather than listen to us talk about it.
While our feelings our hurt, it’s completely understandable that you would want to more of an opportunity to watch the Honda Talon 1000R and 1000X do their thing.
To make amends, we have put together a video made up entirely of clips of Talon in action. We broke up the video into two sections - the first shows off the 68-inch Honda Talon 1000R and the second is all about the narrower 64-inch Honda Talon 1000X.

To everyone bashing it, remember when the rzr was first released? Yeah it took a decade to get it dialed in. In the near future we’ll see exhaust, suspension, wheel/tire, and turbo options come to light. I’m just happy this thing won’t cost $500 in belts each weekend and have that annoying “one speed” sound
To everyone making excuses for the underwhelming suspension and engine power, remember the Rzr was cutting edge, head and shoulders above anything else when it was released. Although this Honda is a solid first offering, it doesn't live up to it's cutting edge pre-release hype. It will get better with time, it will be a great platform for the play it safe niche Honda has always built towards.
Love how quiet the chassis is, no clunks or rattles that sadly is common on some.of the other machines out there.
I like how it lacks that CVT belt whine you here in other side by sides.
When I was in a new Razer the belt whine turned me off to it.
You dont buy honda for fun you buy Honda to own it for 30 years and this SXS shows just that.
That Honda purrrrr is so smoooooth
Thank you for this it's all we have right now!
Thanks for some sound.
I'm just glad the option to shift on the fly has finally come around. Now maybe Polaris can step up their game and make a rzr that shifts on the fly with a paddle shifter 6 speed.
Now if Polaris could just make something with a tiny bit of durability, and an engine that doesn't sound like plow shears in a cement mixer!!😂🤣😂 Honda will durable, but no doubt lack performance. Oh yea, Can-am, perfect but Cant-Afford!
@@Jsf445 man polaris isn't any cheaper. If you go apples to apples they are the same really
@@quig1984m For the Talon price point you can get a Rzr Turbo, so not even close as far as apples to apples
@@WooleySwampAdventures I was talking about polaris and can am
Never seen a cv boot spin before. Thumbs up.
Thanks 👍🏼
Testing out in Stoddard valley.
0:12 is there no front sway bar? Looks like a lock of flex on this machine. This would be really ideal for trails and rocks. Except for no locker. Can’t wait to see this machine in person.
From a very happy YXZ owner...I like it!
Stay with the YXZ you will be much happier.
thomas ellis Yeah, I definitely will.
thomas ellis I would be a little nervous about the Honda transmission.
The 1000x didn't look to bad going through the whoops. Not as smooth as the R but still, not bad. Everyone seems caught up with the 1000R but I think the X is the one I'm leaning toward. You can always save up and get the R's suspension to swap out at a later date if need be!
AppalachianMountainRiders
The X is definitely the one I would buy. I live in KY so it would make more sense for where we ride.
Not concerned at all about whoops... not very many(if any) high speed whoop sections on the woods. I'm more concerned about low range, low end power than anything.
@@arickhook370 Honda's official video shows the front wheels locking up on a rock climb. Should be amazing.
AppalachianMountainRiders plus aftermarket parts are usually far superior to factory anyway!
All of Iowa is 64” width restricted so I’m really into the X as well!
Sounds pretty good stock to be honest. But man, that thing should sound pretty mean with an after market set of headers and pipe. I feel like it needs to be just a touch louder, but not over the top where it's going to piss off everyone on the trail. Either way thanks for the footage. I can't wait till you (or anyone) can get some more detailed review time going!
BarnStangz should sound similar to this czcams.com/video/hxrvR2DHyZ4/video.html
I want to see a side by side with the yxz and xp1000. Do some real test ! Drag race. Rock climb , dunes , that kind of stuff. Real world test !!!!!!!!
Rzr1000 Xp MUD
But really you like rzr?
Yeah the Rzr is a good machine.
Nice vid, thanks for the share. Suspension travel looks like the same typical butterfly motion as all the rest. I'm really interested in the Wildcat XX trophy truck type ride. It's seems very innovated and next level for the UTV class.
skelley521 was waiting for the Talon to come out before I made my decision, but I’m still leaning towards the XX. I really like the Talon transmission, but the XX is built very solid and has better suspension, bigger tires and probably handles better. Was really hoping the Honda would have more to offer
skelley521 wildcat xx the best one for handling and comfort for my i am happy with my choice
middlehot ya I’m about to pick one up this week. Not the fastest out there, but 130 hp is plenty and the rest of the car is miles ahead of the competition
Gazlay43 i can ride with my friend turbo and they cannot pass me into the whoops they need to slow down not me I push more the pedal it's very stable
Thanks for more footage. This machine is really cool. These newer machines are making the Polaris engines sound rough. The absence of a front diff lock is a major let down but might be my only thing in that list. Travel could be better too.
The RZR, Wildcat XX and CanAm X3 all offer trailing arms in that width and all 3 have more travel. I’m a Honda guy, but I think they could have achieved better travel numbers in both models.
Gazlay43 yea you’re right I misspoke for some reason I was thinking those were 68” and up. I agree the travel numbers are off from expectations. It’s Honda though I never expected them to come out with an X3 destroying machine. They did come out with something unique though. The DCT will be cool until others follow suit. Honda waited way to long to get into the industry. Will be interesting to see how that trans holds up to power adders and increased power and abuse in general.
Jay P I’m very interested to see how their trans puts power to the ground compared to a CVT. I’m assuming it won’t have as much power loss as a belt driven unit.
An aftermarket front diff locker will most likely be offered. Once that is installed, this thing will be a very formidable side by side.
Matthew McKinney yea just what we all wanna do to a machine likely starting over $20K... run out a buy a locker solution that should have come from the factory.
Does anyone know if the x would be better on a “motocross” type track? It seems like they are pushing the R more towards wide up desert racing. I would be more of a closed course type rider/racer
The R is more desert/track/rock crawler oriented while the X is more east coast style woods oriented. The X will lack the wider base and suspension travel typically sought after for track use
They need to go east try it in the mud creeks and hills x and r
Soon as they get a locker frontend, i will buy one
And v-twin power, smooth ride
This should have had an inline 4 engine like a sport bike, it would've been an absolute joy with the dct transmisión, like a true sports car... the 2 cylinder engine is a real let down for us... The yamaha screams properly, and the sequential transmission like on race cars is awesome.. I think honda fell short with the touring like engine, they position them selves too close to the RZR, its even hard to tell them apart... So much potential, such a shame, looks like an RZR wannabe.
If I could afford one this is what I would get
Seems pretty quiet!
You can all ways Change that 😂
I would like to have one but every time I get nice shit someone steals my stuff...
Sounds like the pioneer 1000
Conner Pyles
Has the same motor
Conner Pyles I disagree, I have a 17 pioneer 1000. This sounds much more throaty. My pioneer sounds highpitched.
@@Alex-ie4mh I didn't hear anything throuty coming from this Honda sounded more like a golf cart I admit I was excited about this machine but looking at specs and in action this does nothing for me.
@C-Bomb Same motor, different map.
Needs a turbo
Looks rough as hell...like always
Ha! I know exactly where this machine was tested! I camp right at the base of those little hill climbs every year!
Looks to be Stoddard wells
@@johnymatic looks to me to be right to the east of the 395 about 1.5 miles north of the garlock road-395 intersection, right off rm-14 trail
A serious lack of context. Show a comparison with Maverick.
Hey Honda you got to keep this thing flat while going through the whoops like the competition. That buckin feeling would just get annoying. I like seeing the Can-Am and the Polaris go through the whoops and keep a flat chassis.
Sounds too tame
It sounds so under powered 😐
Typical honda
You're judging a machine's power by it's "sound" with a STOCK exhaust on a youtube video??? Ok Bro! LOL!
I hope this thing cost like a LOT less than the rzr or it will be s piece of shiet
You're going to have to narrow it down, as there are a lot of RZR models. The RZR S 1000 EPS is probably the closest model. That RZR has an MSRP of $18K. I'm guessing the Talon X will end up somewhere around $19K - same as the Yamaha YXZ1000R base model. But we should find out soon enough.
It wont, but the Talon has more engineering in its seat buckles than Polaris ever thought about.
@DaBoogie mjm
DaBoogie 20 years. 1999 ranger was first.
So you've driven one? Or your basing your judgment on a new model by a youtube video. What are you? 12?
Anyone who rides one of these in our group is going to fall behind. "Conquer the desert on 28" tires and short wheelbase". Lame
@C-Bomb Nowhere did I say that everyone lives in the desert, but the video shown is only literally in the desert. Not the best environment to showcase the bump handling of a small tire short wheelbase underpowered machine. Stick this thing in the woods where it belongs.
They just came out. Two models first year hold on to your panties.
All you know it alls dont realize a DCT transmission puts 30% more power to the ground than a CVT trans. This is right there with the 130hp machines and just because a particular brand sxs gets beat in a 500 ft. race by 6 or 10 feet ,,,, who cares. The models with the best suspensions will most likely be faster in the rough stuff due to being more stable to run hard,,, horsepower needs control. I think this Honda model will prove itself,,,, just give it some time.
Actually a modern cvt like those used on the X3 or the Team Clutches used on a XX only have a 19-24% DTL vs a manual or auto dct with about 15-18% loss. So not a big jump on loss, and definitely not a 30% difference. The biggest advantage to the cvt is the ability to hold peak hp rpm at wot and hold until it runs out of gear, where a dct must climb to max hp, shift then climb again to max hp leaving too much loss between shifts. Any percentage of dtl to dct is gained back by a cvt regarding its design of holding peak hp though its entire shift range. Will it run with a 130hp XX, or a 120hp base X3? Guess we will wait and see, but my guess is it will be about as quick as a XP1000, especially with its 28" tires.
Not everyone runs continuously at WOT. In the Woods you need throttle responce and compression braking and that’s where the Honda’s dct is going to dominate any cvt. Plus you won’t have to replace belts.
Ehhhh...honda too little too late ...not gonna make a dent in the sxs game
