I'm just a beginner. Isn't that the way art should be?
Lovely film! The best reason for sketching loose - because it gives you joy!
Thankyou Liz!
I think what you were trying to say Toby is that we are all individuals (oh no we're not!!) and we just need to find our own style and what degree of looseness suits us and that we produce art for our own benefit and not to worry about what people think. I think everyone who comes on here is trying to get looser in their sketching - for whatever reason that may be. Some are possibly very proficient drawers and can spend ages trying to add every bit of detail and just want to get the fun back and produce a finished painting quickly. Others, like me, are perhaps less good at drawing, so sketching loose means we don't have to stress about perfection. I also think everyone's idea of loose varies considerably. I'm personally just trying to find my style and what I like best for the least effort - i just need to get over that barrier of thinking about what others think and enjoy myself!
Thanks Martin, a week thought out comment!
I like the reminder that we don't need to show our art to anyone, we can just enjoy it. I need reminding about that sometimes.
I need to remember that a lot too!
I really like your approach. I started sketching two months ago at the age of 72. Therefore, I am committed to learning all the basics of the craft to get a good foundation. At the same time, I feel more drawn to your less precise, more fun, more expressive and less time consuming focus. It just speaks to my personality. With my writing, I do poetry, lyrics, flash fiction and short satire rather than novels, so I guess I am being consistent. Thank you.
You can do it!
This was particularly helpful, thanks!
That was very powerful, the way you just put it away at the end. Very cool. Made me think anyway... Thank you for that.
Thank you for another great video. I especially like when you said to do it for yourself not for everyone. Everyone is one of my biggest worries when I’m painting.
Thanks for reminding me again why I like sketching loose too 😄
Thank you very much Toby, I'm really enjoying your tutorials and leant a lot from them. ❤️
lovely to hear :)
Great, freeing video! Thank you!
You are so welcome!
I've been trying laying down the ink without lifting the pen. And I'm really enjoying it!
Awesome!
Toby...I do so enjoy watching your videos for many reasons. Especially your softness and encouragement makes me come back to your videos to learn more about sketching loose. I too do not enjoy the painstaking process of "trying" to make my drawings detailed and exact. I lose interest. But with this style of freedom in sketching that truly results in amazing creations I didn't know were possible, I am finding that depth within my own artwork. I had put my drawing and painting on the back burner for some time now. But I am charged up through your videos. Thank you so much for posting such a treasure of videos at no cost to the viewer. It's a blessing. Namaste. Sharon
Aww thank you very much
I love your work! Your style of drawing and painting makes me want to paint again, and I will make a huge effort to crave out a time to take your course soon. A great big thank you from San Francisco!
Thanks Susan 😁☺️
Great advice!
Tahnk you :D
Thank you for giving us all permission to find the style we enjoy the most! I’m beginning to think my style is slightly less loose than yours, but I aspire to be more like you!
My pleasure
I can relate with those not wanting granulation and cauliflowers. But I am gradually changing. There are times when I want them.
Trying something different every once in a while is a good thing!
One day I'll get you over to the dark side :D
@@TobySketchLoose Says he as Imperial March played softly in the background. 🤣
@@cindyhorton6980 Indeed 😊
I love loose sketches, and many happy accidents.!
Yes indeed
Thank you! I am trying but sooo not there yet….
I’ve been enjoying your videos…and I don’t do any painting or sketching! But you make me want to try it. Have you done a video about the equipment that a beginner should consider as a first step in this journey?
Yes ! www.urbansketch.co.uk/blog/urbansketchingbeginnersblog - this blog lists a few options :)
Question: How do you know where to start? Is there a method to your "madness"? :)
A great question - I normally start in the middle or at the focal point. I prefer then drawing the top of scene, before finishing off the bottom.
Could you tell us where you begin
Normally I begin my sketch at the middle, and go along the top then the bottom of the image.
I love this, but unfortunately, it doesn't work with gouache!
You are of course correct, I've always admired fisher but never had much confidence in it
Was this video available to Patreons? I’m not First! 😂
haha no, I don't have Patreons
Oh, I probably put it on a playlist by accident before I actually released it - hence the VERY early pre release comments :D
Needs to be louder.
Otherwise fine
Thanks Karen - I'll reupload with loader audio next week :)
