  • My band director friends are always asking for tips and tricks to teaching clarinet embouchure, so I decided to make a video about starting new clarinet students with a DOUBLE-LIP EMBOUCHURE.
    Yes, that's right: double-lip.
Funky embouchures are a defense mechanism to prevent squeaking. Squeaking can happen when the tone holes aren't covered, but another culprit is mouthpiece BITING.
This double-lip ensures that students are using the corners of their mouths to hold the mouthpiece rather than their jaw. I use this trick with students of all ages and levels-and my own practice-when we get really squeaky.
It's not necessary to put the top teeth on the top of the mouthpiece! 🤯
I always start my beginners with a double-lip embouchure!

Thank you so much for an easy to follow guide, and method for practice! I bought a clarinet two days ago just becuse i could and have been having issues with consistency when it comes to the sound that i produce, i tried the double lip embouchure and it works like a charm!

Band Director here - I'm a competent clarinet player (brass primary). I play with a double lip embouchure. I teach teeth on top, and check with my students every once in a while to be sure they're doing teeth on top. But double lip is perfectly functional. Don't knock it, people!

I switched to double lip later in life. MUCH later in my career. Looking back on my struggles, pinching, TMJ issues, etc… totally regret not switching to it earlier. But to each his own. Happy clarinet playing
