I have two problems with this game. The first is the lack of new music for the wily castle screen. Way too much Megaman 2 for my liking. Second, if you screw up and run out of E-Tanks during the boss rush and wily fight, restarting the whole castle is ridiculous and very hard to beat all 8 bosses and all three wily machines in one go

    • @MeguhFan
      @MeguhFan  Před rokem +4

I didn't really think of that, but yeah, the song is pretty much the same.
It's a mixed bag, but I felt that redoing the castle to go back to the store made the final castle more balanced, but I understand the frustration too.

Megaman 9 is amazing! Capcom went all out on this one because IMO it's basically all classic Megaman perfected.
Levels are well designed, loved the bosses, and there's not a single weapon I dislike because they're all useful! My only gripe is that slide & charge was given to Protoman rather than be in the base game. I can do without charge but SLIDE is just too fun!

Really looking forward to your review of 10. 9 is my favorite one in the series, but my feelings on 10 are a lot more complicated. I like (most of) the level design but I only found a few weapons to be usable (the Wheel Cutter is super fun though). Meanwhile, 9 doesn’t have one bad weapon.

What do you think of Splash Woman's stage? Context: It is probably the only stage in the Mega Man Franchise where you can do a Pacifist Run no damage.
For me, it is okay to have Pacifist stages here and there as long as they Punish you appropriately, but It is so easy to do here. When I first played through this stage, even I noticed how easy it is to do it.

Hmmm, that's interesting. I didn't notice that. It's been a while, but I feel like I liked the level, particularly the giant octopus that can cover Mega Man with ink. The whole game felt hard to me, so I didn't think to slow down in this level and see if I could get through without killing any robots.

    Robot Master Reviews
    1. Concrete Man: Starting off with the best RM in the game. Concrete Man is a perfect example of a good Mega Man boss.
It is rhythmic and reactionary. It is neither strictly patternized nor RNG BS. It hits that sweet middle spot.
I love how he reacts to your position. I think staying close is better though.
He also shakes the ground when he ground pounds or shoulder tackes (Reminds me of someone. Wa Wa Wa!) which means you have to keep yourself on your toes. If you mess up, you die.
A few flaws are that he can corner you. It happens rarely but he does. Sprite could have been better as he is just another Guts Man rip off and Laser Trident doesn't make sense as a weakness. But other than that, it is pretty much a masterpiece. Sums up Mega Man 9's quality. 9/10
    2. Tornado Man: From best to my personal favourite. In fact my personal favourite RM of all time. But let's take out the Bias.
Tornado Man is another one of those fights that keeps you on your toes. He summons Tornados from the bottom of the screen seemingly in a random pattern. They also make you jump higher which compliments his Tornado Seat attack.
There are instant death spikes in this room and normally I am not a fan of instant death hazards in bosses and this no exception.
For some reason this fight makes you want to stay close to the centre like in real Tornadoes, the eye is calm.
And who can forget the awesomeness of his sprite. Maybe Plug Ball could have been better as a weakness. 8/10
    3. Splash Woman: For the first lady, she is pretty underwhelming.
She just summons fishes while ascending in a curve, rains down her laster trident which is appreciated as it keeps you on your toes and then crashes down on you. Rinse and repeat.
A robot master with a very strict pattern isn't what I appreciate but for what it is, it flows nicely.
She also takes 2 shots from the buster instead of one so there's that. And her fishes have wierd hitboxes as they sometimes hit you and sometimes don't.
Hornets are a good weakness and elementally makes sense. If she had her attacks somewhat randomized, took only 1 hp per buster and fishes had their hitboxes fixed, this would have sealed the deal. 6/10
    4. Plug Man: Plug Man is such an underrated RM. His fight is pretty good ruined by his awful design. Ruined is a too harsh word because it still flows pretty well.
Plug Man is the A-hole RM of this game and unlike Quick Man, Shadow Man or even Slash Man, he is A-hole in a good way. He only has one attack and I wish he had more, but that one attacks works fine. He fires electric balls that crawl accross the terrain and fall on you and sometimes two of them. I love the way how much you habe to look out.
You'd think he'd be incredibly cheap but he isn't. And the uneven terrain compliments his A-hole pattern as well.
There's a flaw though because you can completely lock him into a pattern but that isn't big deal because it's very difficult to pull of.
Jewel Sattelite is decent weakness and could have been much much better. But it is a masterpiece as well. If only his design was any good. 8/10
    5. Jewel Man: Jewel Man was probably made as a joke seeing how ridiculous his real pattern is.
He jumps when you jump. As stupid as that sounds, it actually flows really well. His sattelite attack is also great as they are their individual hitboxes rather than one big one.
And they also have a risk vs reward system. You can shoot them off to ease of his Jewel throwing pattern in exchange of missing shots but if you have a no miss, you have to dodge his tricky jewel throwing pattern.
Blackhole Bomb pretty much trivializes this fight so a minus for that and he only has one attack so another minus. 6.5/10
    6. Hornet Man: Hornet Man has a very simplistic pattern if you remove all the flare to his fight. He just runs left to right.
But the real stars of fight are those Hornets he throws out and for 3 reasons.
    1. They don't home directly at you. They have a delay so you do have a few moments to think about your next move and combined with Hornet Man himself moving back and forth makes it tricky yet epic.
    2. He fires three of them. Less would make him too lenient, more would make him too unforgiving and
    3. They take 2 shots. Any less would have made them weak and any more or outright indestructible would have made him too unforgiving.
Magma Bazooka is an excellent weakness because it was pretty much made for this fight.
As much as I like it though, that's the only thing he does. Maybe I would have added more attacks like Exploding Bees or something. And his design is wierd, I would have preferred if the game had 2 ladies and one of them being unused honey woman. 6/10
    7. Magma Man: All of the RMs in Mega Man 9 so far had been good.
This changes now. In a game with bosses as great as Concrete Man or Plug Man, it is so underwhelming to see someone who has one basic boring pattern.
Magma Man jumps and shoots. Nothing else. What happened to the other attacks. I would have added that Hot Dog fire from Mega Man 2 here.
He would have been absolutely awful if his roomfight was even but luckily it isn't. He has a good telegraph. When he bends his knees, jump under him.
Also Tornado Hold doesn't not kill him even if you use all the energy. Plus his design also very boring, more so than concrete Man. 4.5/10
    8. Galaxy Man: Just like how Plug Man is A-hole RM done right, Galaxy Man is the easy boss done right.
The best thing about him is that he never repeats his pattern more than thrice. He has 3 attacks and all of them have a good telegraph.
It is a ton of fun to lead his blackhole. The turning and shooting maneuver during the Blackhole attack is a design that should have been more looked into.
And concrete Shot as a weakness couldn't have been better. 7.5/10

I grew up with these, and when it was released, everyone I knew, including myself, were incredibly disappointed. We all liked Mega Man 8, and this was a massive backtrack. Mega Man 10 was a lot more fun, just being able to play Bass was enough to make that one better than 9.
11 still didn't have the progressive style of Megaman 8/Megaman X4-6, but it's not bad.
I'll play through most of these again and again, with the exception of 7 and 4.

Here's my review for Mega Man 9
Mega Man 9 defines what Mega Man Should be. Mega Man 9 went back to basics and succeeded with that Idea. You would never miss the Slide and Charged shot in the game. Each and Every Platform and Position is placed in such a manner that you can traverse them using different techniques. It was apparent that the creators had years of experience on how to make a good Mega Man stage. The Graphics of this game is gorgeous and unlike NES games there's no screen flickering, looping or lag. Maybe a bit morose for my taste but still good.
This game does have a tendency to kill you for fun at times and doesn't erase the fact all of it is well made. Bosses, for the first ever, do not feel brain dead. They are there to have a Danse Macabre with you. Weapons might be one of if not the best in the series rivalling Mega Man 4 and 11. The Music in this game is phenomenal. For one, they aren't very Rock/Metal heavy. They have much more orchestral music feel to it especially Splash Blue.
In terms if flaws, the enemy diversity feel a bit lacking at times and the wily stages especially the wily bosses feel very underwhelming. And unlike in Mega Man 4, you can't use a weapon if it has less than intended HP usage. Both Rain Flush and Flash Stopper use 4 HP yet can still be used with only 2 left. Not with the Tornado Hold. But other than that, it is pretty much a masterpiece. 9.0/10
Edit: One youtuber I will not name said that New Super Mario Bros DS brought 2-D Genre back *_all on its own_* . I feel like that he has either never played Mega Man 9 or he just disregarded it for his favourite video game franchise. Even if Mega Man wasn't my favourite video game, I would still not disregard Mega Man 9 on the retro revival thing.
Edit 2: 2008-2010 was so good for video games. We got games like GTA 4, Red Dead Redemption, Mafia 2, Saints Row 2, Super Mario Galaxy, Mega Man 9 etc. All good games.

I mean saying that Mario Bros DS brought back the 2D genre is just false, because 2D games were very common on handheld consoles, and Mario Bros. DS didn't change much with it. I would argue that Super Mario Bros. Wii definitely was important in bringing 2D games into the mainstream, as it was the first best seller console 2D game in quite a long time.

Yeah Mega Man 9 is the best mega man game to this day, other than maybe Mega Man x2. It's just the best. No contest inside the classic series. I'd agree that 3 might have better music but 9's soundtrack is just years of mega man put together and put out again.
I pretty much agree with how you put Mega Man 9 in historical prospective, I think it should have gotten WAY more press for game of the year. It deserves more press for being as great and inspirational as any other mega man game other than the first one. Most games of this era suck. Like, anti-gamer stuff. I loved Brawl in the end, but that game was made to make smash more casual, and Mega Man 9 was anything but.
